Title: May need new players
Post by: bhu on November 19, 2011, 05:44:56 AM
At least 1 of my 4 players in the September 1776 campaign may have to leave.  So I'd like to open it up to 1 or 2 more people if possible.

As a note, it's awesome. Do join.

Extra cookie for those who spot what's funny about the current character's names.

How far are you in? I read a bit about it at BG a few months ago but I haven't been following it. What do I need to come in?

I like your stuff bhu, and it would be interesting to play a serious campaign of yours.

Not too far actually.  The group traveled outside of town, met a horrifying event, and have retreated.  Thats about as far as we've gotten.

It's a lovecraftian d20 modern campaign set in 1776 if thats ok.

I'd be interested. Are there any niches to fill? I know you had a lot of specific rules for this, so is there anywhere I should start (IIRC, you have custom classes, for example)?

What level should I make the PC? Are there any other assumptions I should make (is my character familiar with the supernatural stuff yet?)

You can't get more serious than that!

I'd also like to know what niches are filled, what the houserules are, custom classes, starting level, what D20 Modern books I can use, etc.  :p

boz is a natural philosopher (early scientist) and gunsmith, flay is a constable

the potential missing player was headed towards being a medium

pip is a war vet
you can peek thru the campaign info thread (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?board=48.0)

it should answer most questions

Duelist looks like fun. I've never played d20 modern/past before, but I've skimmed it a while ago. I'm assuming I'd want to enter in as a fast hero or something?

Is there a particular version I use? What's the point-buy? I can write something up in a day or day-and-a-half and make sure it's legit. Background wise, I might be some sort of noble or ex-noble who's skilled at dueling (more detail later).

Is there a preferred alignment (good/evil)?

Rules for this game:

Hit Points: Max 1st Level, average after.

Stats: 28 point buy

There are some skill/feat/profession differences twixt d20 modern/past.

Here are some highlights for the Feats:

Advanced Firearms Proficiency, Aircraft Operation, Burst Fire, Double Tap, Drive-by Attack, Force Stop, Gearhead, Medical Expert, Strafe, Surgery, and Vehicle Dodge aren't available.

Personal Firearms Proficiency covers virtually all handheld firearms.  Cannons require exotic weapon proficiency.

Archaic weapons covers all bows

Simple weapons cover crossbows

Simple or Archaic will cover almost all melee weapons unless truly exotic

a few other feats have some differences

http://www.12tomidnight.com/d20modernsrd/Home.php  this should help some

Starting Occupations: Dilletante, Emergency Services, and Technician are not available, some others have minor differences.

Skills: Computer Use, Investigate, Knowledge (Behavioral Sciences, Technology), and  Pilot are unavailable, some others have changes.

alignment not used

Okay, here's a rough skeleton to make sure I'm doing this right:

Race: Human

Class: Fast 1

Stats:
  Str: 14
  Dex: 16
  Con: 14
  Int: 10
  Wis: 10
  Cha: 10

Feats: Archaic Weapon Proficiency, Point Blank Shot (human bonus, if this applied), Personal Firearms Proficiency (adventurer bonus)

Talent: Evasion

Occupation: Adventurer (a duelist/gambler) (PFP bonus feat, Bluff and Spot as class skills).

Skills: Balance +4, Bluff +4, Knowledge (current events) +1, Knowledge (streetwise) +1, Spot +4, Tumble +4

Languages: English, Latin, French (last two from Speak Language)

So, a few questions:

As I get the above hammered out, I'll come up with a good backstory. How much do I know about the current events?

Heres the srd

you make wealth checks to see if you can have equipment
if theres something you want not in this lemme know and ill give you the dc

lemme check on the feats  skills

the colonies at the current point are in a bad way, and a war is on you may have to worry about legal employment a s you have no skills to fall back on other than translation

You'll start off knowing the minimal amount the PC's currently know

imho this online version of the srd is easier to use: http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/resources/systems/pennpaper/modern/smack/srdhome.html (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/resources/systems/pennpaper/modern/smack/srdhome.html)

I think I'm mostly done. I just need to clear a few things up, put up an official sheet, and run it by Bhu.

Here's my sheet for Eric Carlson (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=347634). I still need to put in a description and backstory, and I need stats on some of the gear, but I think I'm all set. I included a link to the IC roll for starting wealth and bought what I could. My wealth dropped to +3 as a result.

Let me know if anything seems incorrect. I should have the rest of the details down within a day.

Yeah I am, sorry.

Robby is making a Fast hero going for Duelist
Boz is a Smart Hero going for Natural Philosopher
Flay is a Dedicated Hero going for Occultist
Pip is a Tough hero going for something or another.

Sound right?

For lack of overlap that leaves me either Strong hero or Charismatic hero.  Melee based character or politician, opinions?

Bhu?  Would a melee based character work?

Or do you not need me anymore?   :p

sorry i got distracted, my relatives get psychotic during the holidays

now that my potential heart attack has been averted...

I'd say got for whatever gets you into the PrC you want.

Either concept owould fit okay though.

I'm not going after any specific Advanced Classes.

Does the party have a face?  If so, I think I'll be playing a boxer.

Was boxing a sport in 1776 in the states?
Flay's constable has a 13 he's as close to a face as the party gets without Arc.

Wikipedia says that it was a sport in England at the time. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing#Broughton.27s_rules_.281743.29)

I didn't necessarily mean a professional boxer though.  By boxer I really meant "guy who fights by putting a weight in his fist and then punches people".  I would take the Brawl feat and attempt to use reflavored Brass Knuckles.  Probably a dock worker, definitely lowbrow.  He'd be able to intimidate people.

If that doesn't work, I can come up with something a bit more "facey".

I'm not sure what advanced classes I'd be going for either one, and as usual bhu you can feel free to have fun with my characters.  :smirk

Intimidating people is pretty much what my future PrC is all about. I'm building towards halberd tripping, but more melee is welcome ofcourse.

(keep in mind though, generally you may not want to go into melee with an ancient horror from another dimension)

Halberd Tripping in D20 Modern?  Interesting direction.

Anyways, I totally want to punch an ancient horror in the "face".  :P

If you're sure you want to go the up close and personal route I'm ok with it, but keep in mind what happens to people who get within melee range in the stories  ;)
