Boxes under names?
« on: March 10, 2012, 11:31:00 AM »
What are they? They seem to be at least partially based on # of posts, but not entirely.
I am referring to the three yellow boxes under my name, or the 5 under the Mods. (blue if it's not actually their board to mod, green if they are god there.)

They're linked to poster rank. The standard poster ranks based on number of posts get increasing amounts of yellow boxes, up to four or five, I'm not sure. Special usergroups like Handbook Writers get a static number of yellow boxes, regardless of post count. Moderators get five blue boxes. Honorary Mods get five green boxes (there's no actual functional difference between a general moderator and a moderator put 'in charge' of a specific section, as far as I'm aware; you'll note that only a few sections even list specific mods as being in charge). PbP DMs are Honorary Moderators within their PbP(s). The Golbal Moderator, Prime, gets five blues as well, while the BGs get five red boxes.

Basically, it's a function of what it says under your username, rather than necessarily your post count.

.. So they mean absolutely nothing that you can't read right above it?

Being Honorary Mod of a board (that is, listed as a Moderator under the board name) overrides your boxes with the green ones. Handbook Writers did have a static number, but that's since been changed and they use the post-count-dependent one.

Hey, don't forget Dan...

They look cool, and make mod/GM posts stand out more.

How many posts does it take for a second box to show up? What about a third? etc.

Right now the post-rank thresholds are 50/100/250/500/1000/2500; every other rank adds a star. (yes they are called stars despite defaulting to a box image)
