Gaming Advice / Past Lives/Alter Egos Taking Over in Scenes
« on: August 16, 2012, 01:18:12 AM »
I'm prepping for a new game for some players and am trying to figure out the best way to make this work.  Long story short, all the PCs will be mortal incarnations of some elemental/natural/primal force (air, trees, rage, etc).  Unfortunately, due to Far Realm intervention, they don't know they are (the players, of course, do) until something triggers the release of the spirit/force.

Think Avatar-state in Avatar: TLA, if you've seen it.  The game will be run in 3.5, and I'm looking for ideas for how to handle the mechanics of the alter-ego taking over when it does.

Eventually, I want the players to be able to coincide and/or conquer the spirit and have control over the power granted, but I'm not sure what those powers are/how they would work, from a mechanical standpoint.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. Thanks.  :cool

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / [3.5] The Dancer (PrC)
« on: July 19, 2012, 01:36:48 AM »
I'm running a short campaign for a few friends while I'm visiting the other side of the country.  One of my friends wanted a dance-related class, and Shadowdancer just wasn't cutting it. Cloaked Dancer from Complete Scoundrel sounded fun, but it wasn't. It was terrible.

So I made a dance-inspired class.  It's currently being tested by my friend, but most of the people in my game are fairly new players, so I'd like a seasoned opinion on where the balance flaws are.  Thanks. :)

Dancer
Name subject to change when I come up with one better

Play By Post / Character Sheet Templates
« on: July 18, 2012, 11:19:45 PM »
Courtesy of Tshern back on BG:

Hello there! In case some DMs or players don't like using online character sheets I took the liberty of posting a model sheet her so that you can use it as a base for your own stuff. To get it out properly, quote my message and then copy it so that you get all the tags, because there are going to be a bunch of those.

Play By Post / Open Game Advertisements
« on: July 18, 2012, 11:05:17 PM »
There are plenty of games open now, and more so starting up soon.  Inevitably, there will be open slots appearing in games as characters either die or real life steals them away.

This thread will serve as a bulletin board for those games. Whenever a game has an open slot, a GM may post in this thread.

Please note the game (preferably with a link) and any character creation/background information needed.

Players, please PM the GM if interested.  GMs, please edit the post when the space has been filled, both so players don't waste their time and so your inbox does not get flooded.

Please only post in this thread if you are currently running a game and have an open space to fill.

Play By Post / Play-By-Post Handbook (questions and suggestions here)
« on: July 18, 2012, 10:53:29 PM »
Hello! :D  Welcome to the Play-by-Post (PbP) forum here.

You may be wondering what exactly PbP is, well this thread should answer that and many other questions you may come up with. If for some reason, your question is not answered in the handbook, please post it here. Odds are it will be answered by a mod or one of the GMs currently running a game.

Now on to the good stuff! PbP is similar to your normal table-top game, only instead of sitting around a table playing, you post online. There are a number of benefits to this form of playing table-top games. You are given plenty of time to think through your actions, so if you are not the most social person but your character is, you have time to think what a charismatic person might come up with. You also get to play with people all over the world. Also, because we here at BG love all types of gaming, there's no system restriction, so maybe you've always wanted to play that one system but no one you know would learn it. Well play it here! :cool

Everything sounds great, right? Well it is, for the most part. There is one minor drawback about PbP when compared to traditional table-top games, and that is time. PbP moves at a much slower pace because not everyone is online at the same time. This is especially true when playing with people from all over the world. The game is constantly running, 24/7, but it moves at a much slower pace. Don't lose heart though, PbP are amazingly fun once you get going. ;)

Remember the only rule we have here is - Don't be a douchebag!

Okay, so now you've gotten a rough idea of what a PbP is, but you may be wondering how to play in one. The most important thing to remember is to always use details. The more detail you put into the game, the more fun you'll have. For example:

Bad - John eats his breakfast.
Good - After waking up with a massive hang-over, it takes John almost twenty minutes to roll himself out of the bed and downstairs. As he pulls a chair up to the table with the rest of the party, he lets out a grumble before grabbing for his bowl of gruel and hastily scarfing it down.

Here's a little generic guideline, although different GMs may prefer posting in a different method.
Use normal text to explain what your character does.
Speak in color. Choose whichever one fits your character best.
Think in italics.
<<Use double arrows for telepathy and/or thought>>

One of the best features that we have here is that with each game, the GM becomes a mod for that particular mini-forum. He or she can choose to have one thread for character sheets, one for in-game discussion, one for out of game discussion, and even a thread for spectators to comment on what's going on. Whatever your game needs, you'll be able to set it up in your little private forum.

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / [3.5]Ninja - A Step-up
« on: June 27, 2012, 11:09:06 PM »
Okay, so in the spirit of the Hexblade and the Knight, I've also worked on the Ninja a bit.

Ninja
Hit Die: d6
Alignment: Any
Important Stats: Dex>Int>Wis>Con>Cha>Str

Class skills: Balance, Climb, Concentration, Decipher Script, Disable Device, Disguise, Escape Artist, Forgery, Hide, Jump, Listen, Move Silently, Open Lock, Perform, Search, Sense Motive, Sleight of Hand, Spot, Survival, Swim, Tumble, Use Magic Device, Use Rope.
Skill Points Per Level: 8 + Int modifier

One thing to note is that I'm a believer that you need X minutes of down time between encounters to refocus your mind/catch your breath/etc. So whether X is 5 minutes in your game or 15, know that you can't just start/end encounters at will to stay invisible forever. ;)

Tome of Battle has established the normal downtime at 5-minutes, and I think that's a solid starting point. After all, any round/level buffs will be over by that point.

Don't mind me, just porting over my creations from the old boards. ;)

Introduce Yourself / AfterCrescent Lives!
« on: June 27, 2012, 09:43:40 PM »

Hi Everybody!

I'm AfterCrescent, AC, etc.

I was on BG a lot a few years ago. I ended up being a mod there. I wrote some handbooks, etc. Loved the community.  Things got hectic and I just didn't have time to be on message boards. Then they got worse and I didn't have time to game for a while. But things have finally settled down.

I still don't have as much time as I did in college (which totally sucks), but I'm trying to get back in touch with my gaming roots. So here I am. Glad to see the boards are still strong, even though they look way different now.  :P

I'm officially on the West Coast of the US now. And you can find me on FB at /AfterCrescent (Yeah, my name on FB is Morgan Freeman)
