Off Topic Fun / MtG General Thread
« on: January 11, 2012, 07:47:22 AM »
It's that time again. New MtG Expansion! The all new Dark Ascension line of cards.

Sticking to the horror theme we've got real vampires, were wolves, and more blood and gore than a Mortal Kombat game.

You probably should grab a bite before googling this

Here is a couple of cards.
Zombies!
The holy grail?
R&B: still the fastest.

But if you really want to know why I got around to posting this today.

Guess who the new walker card is.

Please title or other wise note which handbook your are replying to.

Resource - Class Boosters
My favorite thread, it contains a listing of most feats and items aimed towards a base class. the second post contains several lists of themed concepts such as undead or charging as well.

Bunko's Bargin Basement (v3.0)
My second favorite thread. Once you're stocked up in being the Paladin you want to be, splash out can pick up some wonderful tools. Mindful on this one I'm still updating form the previous thread (probably, see post for details).

Should be complete threads I offer are
Building a Weapon of Legacy, for dummies
Spontaneous Wizard Guide
As well.

General D&D Discussion / 4th's little tricks
« on: December 06, 2011, 07:33:15 AM »
We had a thread like this on the old board started by me but the last update was applied in 2008 (artificer was just a preview then). Basically the goal of the thread wasn't 3rd is more broken than 4th or proof that 4th is broken but a list of really powerful tricks. I'd like to see how things have come since then.

For now, here is the old list. With some comments.

Broken
1. Intimidate's auto win against bloodied foes, no matter how much healing, backup, or desire to die fighting they have.
2. The wall trick. Create a wall, shove them though it a few times. Watch them bleed.
3. You can give a -13+ penalty on saves, what? You can't possibly save EVAR now? Too damn bad. How?
4. The ability to loot the world within one turn as an epic ranger. How?
5. Swordmages and their ability to block attacks dealt to other party members. How?
6. Duplicate for unlimited money. How?
7. Another epic thing, Immorality = a Warforged under the command of a Legendary General. How?

Looks Broken, but it could just be high powered.
1. Griffons giving you two extra attacks.
2. 23+ damage using an at-will melee power as a first level character. How?
3. Oversized 2d6 (or 2d8?) Bloodclaw weapons with Brutal 2.
4. Battlerager Vigor, convince your DM those orphans were a threat for unlimited stackable temporary HP.
5. Umber Hulk's minor action area based daze attack.
6. Flame Seed, too lazy to detail it all here but it out damages cloud of daggers by a large amount.
8. Staff of Missile Mastery. It pretty much doubles the bonus when using magic missile. I could be knee jerking here, but I doubt it.

Pre-errata, aka it is printed as broken material, but fixed after we all abused it. Probably should just remove this.
1. Blade Cascade, nothing says die like semi-infinite attacks.

Play Test, because as they found out, play testing 4E for a few months with a biaist group does not reveal a damn thing.
1. Artificers & a real unlimited damage combo. Thanks to people finding it now it won't get printed that way, other wise you can bet it would have. Still work?

Lost Worlds / Class - The DDO Monk
« on: November 15, 2011, 07:34:02 PM »
Lately I've been wondering how the Dungeons & Dragon Online's Monk class would fare in a table top game.

It is pretty much the monk - daily crap + ki.
In DDO each time a monk hits a creature they gain (default) 1 ki which can then be expended in various amounts to augment their melee capabilities. Such as Fire Strike IV costing 7 ki and dealing +2d20 fire damage.

So I copy and pasted, tweaked the numbers a bit as to avoid game breaking (+2d20!) and this is what I came up with. Let me know if you can understand things as I may not have been explanatory enough in some areas (it does have a huge block-o-rules) and any balance issues, aside from it's stronger than the monk, and any tweaks or suggestions to this you may have.

Original idea is Dungeons & Dragons Online, all credits of concept go to them. I only worked on adaptability & rescaling.

Handbooks / Bunko's Bargin Basement (v3.0)

"Yessir, step right up, ladies and gentlemen!  Cedric P. Bunko, at your service...and welcome to Bunko's Bargain Basement!  The old storefront was getting a little rickety, but we're still open for business!

"What, you may ask, is a Bunko's Bargain Basement?  Why, only the finest clearinghouse for magical bargains in seventeen dimensions!

"You see, my friends, every adventurer worth his or her iron rations knows that the right tools make all the
difference between life and death.  But the problem is, adventurers are a busy lot, and they don't always have time to shop around for bargains...and, strictly between you and me, friends, there are a lot of overpriced magical gadgets out there, and people willing to sell them for far more than they're worth.

"Not so here at Bunko's!  Here, we stock only the items which really give you bang for the buck...either those items that are dirt cheap but effective, or the items that may cost a bit more but give you more than you pay for!  Satisfaction is guaranteed at Bunko's!

"For your shopping convenience, items are organized in departments.  Of course, we're always on the lookout for new merchandise...if you have a suggestion for an item we should stock, please feel free to offer it up!

"And now, without further ado, on to the departments...

Please enjoy our selection and don't forget to ask about our buy twenty and get one free deal.

Did I miss something? Tell me what, where to find it, how much it costs, and what it does that makes it awesome. I can update this faster if I don't have to dig for that information.

Off Topic Fun / Irony in rants
« on: November 09, 2011, 01:11:37 AM »
I want to rant about First! posts. :D
(really, any rant on irony fits this thread).

Call it hypocritical or whatever. Sometimes people just open their mouths and bitch about something they are doing or are a part of. Like the joke at the top, complaining about First! messages while calling first or bitching about how someone raises their kids when both of theirs are C- kids and one of them is on parole.

My Sister is a living example of this on Facebook. 33% of my news feeds from her is how bitching about people telling her various things like they unsubscribed to her news feed, or censor her self better than ranting to everyone else about how someone chooses not to hear those rants. Basically take the opinion you have of my trollistic style, ditch logic, really aim for never wrong, replace all forum argument experience with "because I'm the mom and I said so", and blend it until it becomes a mess of shit that even I can't tolerate. She once launched into those huge rant that basically amounted to social networks are too public on a social network where she thought her rant needed to be seen by everyone. I think the best one ever was when she posted on some business's wall about how much she disliked their service and they deleted the comment and banned her. Her being banned made it to Facebook and omfg FREE SPEECH!. I welcomed her to the Internet and told her she was a troll.

Got an ironic rant to vent?

Creations & Ephemera / [Comics] OotS, LFG, Goblins
« on: November 08, 2011, 05:43:14 PM »
You probably already read all three of these but if you don't...

Order of the Stick
Is a stick figure style comic based on a group of adventurers in a D&D setting. the comic includes many jokes about the system, character development, and have a HUGE overall story arc to it. OotS was originally published in the Dragon Magazines as kinda of an episodic thing like Garfield but has since became something far much bigger & better.

Looking For A Group
Is brought to you by the guys that write The Least I Could Do, it's about the adventure of an elf and his companions which a hilariously evil warlock. Like anything developing into a good story it ends up into a huge arc and manages some character development too. All though less so than say OotS. Still an amazingly great read though.

Goblins
This one is less about making a good quip and while it has it's comic moments, it's mostly a serious. The plot followers two main sets of characters. The "Heros", their raid on the goblin village and progressively learning what evil really is. And the "Goblins", a race coined as evil but not necessarily so, they take Class Levels and become adventurer's in their own right. Also a great comic to get into.

My descriptions don't do them justice. Check them out.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Iconic Examples?
« on: November 07, 2011, 11:16:51 PM »
As I just mentioned else where.

In light of new forum, I did have another idea. As an addium(sp) to the specific handbooks, why not have a general? Like, how often to we get a charge based barbarian, or assassin rogue, or dragonfire bard crewsader? Call it the iconic 12, single build tailored exactly for that class's focus with some notes on options. It could be an easy answer/resource for an idea of a new class to you or even starting to play D&D. Link to the dedicated handbook for each class would give you detailed options and more complicated builds. Sounds pretty nifty really, I think I'll open a discussion on it later (or tomorrow, like always I'm playing video games and posting at the same time) and see what kind of interest people have as a whole.

Thoughts?

There is a dozen threads dedicated to this but meh. I can't say mine is the most complete or the best. Only that it has a lot and it is a local html file (with working "spoilers") for easy of use.

If you like it but want more stuff listed in the HTML just post the information and I'll get around to adding it. Otherwise, feel free to post other online downloadables (no closed content or book links, respect the rules here).

Handbooks / Building a Weapon of Legacy, for dummies
« on: November 07, 2011, 08:41:08 PM »
Building a Weapon of Legacy, for dummies

At first glance, WoL sucks. This is because R&D created extremely lame items, and pasted in their sticky notes on how to build them. Which can pretty confusing. Lucky for you, someone who has no clue proceeded to drink a few cans of mountain dew before trying to make sense of the drunken ramblings found within that book to make your life easier.

Step 1
Nonlegacy game statistics. Take your favorite item, and empower it to deity-like levels.

You can pick almost any item to can find or craft that is not already a legacy item, or some type of artifact, or false-living (like golems), or trying to kill you. The latter being more of an advice instead of rules. The limits on picking are simple. If it is a weapon, shield, or armor, its current effective enchantment bonus cannot be higher than +1. For anything else, it cannot exceed the sale price of 4,000gp. +1 clean durable restful soulforged acid/fire/cold/electricity resistance shadow silent moves glamered adamantine feelerplate is perfectly legal if you are immune to a-book-to-the-head.

Also, never pick an item you can sunder, who wants to invest any thing that can be broken? Create a legacy armor, or better yet. A legacy graft. I highly recommend them if you can find one you like that is cheap enough.

Step 2
Requirements. When you get to it, this is stuff to ignore.

You're making the item for your character as soon as you hit level 5. So you should pick requirements like BAB 5 & Fort +5 for fighters, or caster level 5th & concentration 8 ranks for mages etc. that you would have already met.

Step 3
Penalties. R&D's attempt to balance these things. They failed...
(click to show/hide)

Step 4
Legacy Rituals. Because no one wants to run off on a side quest all about you. You should make 'beside quests' that you can do along the way.

To Do, list some ideas or bribe an epic rogue to steal them.

Step 5
Legacy Item Abilities. Stuff that makes you awesome.

Instead of trying to get you to understand (D+E)=F and F=C and G=(F or E).
I think I'm going to try a what seems much simpler way. Abilities come in three levels, least, lesser, and greater. A legacy item has one ability slot per level from the 5th to 20th level (16 in all). Starting out, you can only choose least abilities, at the 11th & 17th levels you upgrade the ability level you can choose from. In short, each legacy item has 6 least slots, 6 lesser slots, and 4 greater slots, and you have to start from the lower side working your way up.

Some abilities take up more than one slot. For those that do, when sorting out what level grants the chosen abilities. All slots used to pay for it must be next to it and you cannot use slots from a different ability level. Example, If you choose a least ability that take up 3 slots, it can take up the first three slots, or the last three slots. It cannot use up the first, second, and fifth slots. Nor can it one of the slots used be a slot that can grant lesser abilities.

There is an exception to slot costs. If you want, you can use one slot from a higher level ability to pick up a lower level ability no matter its slot cost. There is some fine print to this, but it don't matter in a guide book for dummies. Example, You can use a single greater slot to pick up a lesser ability that would normally cost three slots.

Before we can go into the lists you should know a few things. The tag 'Upgrade' means it can be taken multiple times to upgrade a bonus up to the mentioned cap. I also ripped apart other legacy items presented in books and stole their abilities with a best guess cost. Ripped abilities note where they came from.

Handbooks / Spontaneous Wizard Guide
« on: November 07, 2011, 08:27:44 PM »
How do you make your wizard a spontaneous caster?
Well you can't, at least not by the true definition of spontaneous spellcaster, but you can gain the practical end result. Within this very thread me and other contributing members of this board will try to present you with a list of choices to help you in your goal of mimicing spontaneous casting, or just plain expanding your daily list of spells. Just try not to upset the sorcerer any more than he already is.

Introduce Yourself / I'm a noob lol
« on: November 07, 2011, 02:34:09 AM »
Plz hlp me ima newb and cant cee teh bords.

I'd say welcome back BG, but how can you welcome someone if you're new here too?

Edit - Oh wait, I'm supposed to introduce my self again aren't I?

Hi, I'm Lost.
I wandered in here after finally finding a way out of BG :(

Srsly, I was the guy called LostPassWordDoesNotWork on WotC's forums. I had a nicer account but I lost the password, and guess what didn't work there? I haven't logged in there since WotC's chat was revamped, and haven't even browsed the boards since BG spun off. Anyway, I'm direct with very little censorship and very prone to using off the wall analogies.

I'm prone to suggesting the use of Warblade, JPM, Bard, and Abjuration Champion in various mixes because I love gish builds. I also seemed to have carved out my own little image of black magery by using Stormcaster's Save vs Stun ability to nearly all elements coldblasting. I think Monk's suck but they have more going for them than other classes and consider the Barbarian the second poorest class in D&D (only the Samurai is worse).

Some information you should know when interacting (aka arguing) with me.
(click to show/hide)

Other than that. Hey, I'm as wrong as the next guy. In fact, I have the ability to typo entire words when I'm not replying to the wrong thread. I do generally help out when I care to and manage a few resource threads (which I'll be moving here) too.
