"Are you capturing this?" a voice said.
"Every moment, sir." Another said.
"Very well, *ahem*. My name is Igrod Straud, and I have created life. Within this canister here, behind this glass, sleeps my creature. It started out as my son, but when he said he would help me in any way he could, well, he should have seen this coming." the man said, gesturing to the tank. He was a tall man, thin almost to the point of malnourished. Holding a crystal nearby was his assistant, a putrid little glob of a man who's back would be hunched if he wasn't already stooped over.
"The metamorphosis chamber will allow us to survive any assault, and bring swift pain to the enemies of the Magi, and while others wither and die, we shall remain strong and invincible." he caressed the glass tank before him. "My son shall be the vanguard of a new era. He will be the first, and soon after, others will follow."
"Oh excellent sir, excellent!" the booger of a man spoke.
"Silence! This is the realm of genius! A masterstroke, in the footsteps of the one true god... Science! Unlike the Gods, the creations of Science must be perfect, infused to be unstoppable." he rambled on for a few more minutes. Behind the thick green goop of the alchemical mixture was a monster. Not the child that was the son of Straud, but a horror. Clad in chitin, bigger then his father and his assistant together, with about as many arms as they had between them.
"There..." Igrod said, tightening some tubes and checking a gauge or two. Then he cast a final spell around the top of the canister, "While it pains me to do this, my son will awaken as a monster, a creature unlike any he has seen, and whenever he looks into the mirror, he will see that creature. I will not allow that. With this final incantation, I remove the memories my son possessed, so this monster will awaken a clean slate. Almost as empty as your head, Servant." he said, and his malformed assistant smiled with what teeth he had left. Any sign of notice was notice.
With that done, "The final series is in place. He'll awaken within a week. Servant! Give me that crystal. It mustn't go with the others! He'll find THOSE when he awakens, and the instructions I left within those shards will orchestrate the downfall of the Church and the rise of the invincible Magi. Arcanum Imperius!" He gathered the crystals that he had imprinted commands and orders and false memories into, put them in a satchel, and placed them near the tank. Then he departed, for points unknown... followed by Servant.
The creature awoke as expected, a week later. The creature within pounded at the tank's walls and thick glass surfaces, knocking loose cables and tubes, which in true Goldberg fashion knocked the satchel containing the crystals Straud left behind to the floor. As the creature emerged from the tank, glistening with metamorphic gel, his massive foot descended upon the crystals, shattering them to dust. Upon fully emerging from the tank, he stood there for well over an hour before the lumbering beast found a mirror, and after a moment's inflection upon his reflection, he uttered a phrase, his first words in his new life.
"What..... the hell...... am I?"
