"Well now..."  Lazaro thinks to himself.  Out loud he says, "Best you leave us alone and tell us who the Sky Shooters are before harm comes to you."

Quietly Saul whispers "Who or what is it, Lazaro? I can't make it out."

Lazaro whispers back, "It seems to be some kind of large black hunting cat with tentacles on its back."

Darius takes another careful look around, manifesting his violet mindblade as he does. He's clearly unsure of where or what the threat is, but refuses to be taken off-guard if he can help it.

Taking a cue from the guy with the glowy sword, Milo readies a dart in each hand and scans the area carefully. {Internally, "Great, not a half day and already there's trouble." }

Saul whispers back "That sounds like a displacer beast. I don't know a lot about them, except that they're cunning and like to use misdirection when hunting."

(click to show/hide)

To the unseen beast he says "Listen Friend, I fear you're going to find us more than a match for you. We're not some harmless pilgrims wandering in the forest. We're highly dangerous mercenaries.

However, we are new here, and would like to ask you some questions. If it's sport and food you're after, perhaps we can make a deal. We have a few prisoners back in camp. You can take your pick of them, and we'll let the one you choose loose into the forest for you to chase down. All we want is a few answers first. Sound equitable?"

Milo fights the urge to sting Saul's rear end with a dart for being so callous! He doesn't as that might show whatever this is that the group isn't solid. {Internally"By the Lion's Mane, I hope this guy knows what he's doing!"}

Also, Initiative= 1d20+4=21

What Saul called a displacer beast steps around the tree, almost appearing to come around both sides at once then merge, then split, then shift.

Sense Motive check = 1d20+1= 3
Initiative check = 1d20 + 2 = 8

"Maybe was hasty, methinks, yes.  Many lots manthings walkin' under Sky Shooters' sky, yes.  Could let the manthings go no troubles, yes.  Not scared of the Sky Shooters meself, no.  Sky Shooters winged and bow-armed manthings, yes.  Can go hunt a priz'ner now, yes?"

"Yes, you can answer a few questions while we head back towards our camp so you can pick your prisoner.

So the Sky Shooters shoot any other man-things they see on the surface? Are there no man-things that live on the surface of this world, then? For fear of the Sky-Shooters?

Is there a place where there are lots of Sky-Shooters? A city? Or are they all just scattered about in small nests?

What do you know of the man-things that live beneath the ground? Are they enemies of the Sky Shooters?"

Saul starts walking casually back towards the original encampment. While doing so, he mentally contacts his psicrystal, and tells it to ask Josiah to try to get the people prepared for a possible attack from flying archers. They should be ready to take cover under the trees, etc.

"Sky Shooters shoot manthings dusk and dawn whenever they see, yes.  Forced the other manthings under ground, yes.

Sky Shooters live in caves on cliffs by water, yes.  Past the trees, yes.  Homes in trees only for stopping-by time, yes.

Manthings beneath ground short, furry, yes.  Spiky metal covers and not good eating, no.  Diggers, burners, tool-makers, yes."

Milo puts his darts away and moves in Saul's Direction. He keeps one eye on the sky and another on his sword.

"Or goblins." Makala pauses for a few moments, thinking. "What worries me is how are these Sky Shooters flying... Magic? Racial trait? We need to discover that that as soon as possible..."

Saul makes a "Tsk tsk" sound and says "Someone didn't do their homework on their new homeworld! They have wings. They appear to be what we called raptorans back home."

(click to show/hide)

After walking for a bit more, Saul says "So, can anyone think of more questions to ask? Or should we start thinking about which prisoner to... release. Remember that one that tried to stab our friend? I think he might make a good choice."

He tries to get his real meaning across without making it so obvious that the displacer beast catches on. What he really wants is for his companions to attack now that they've drawn it out into the open and gotten as much info out of it as they could.
