Chapter 2: Bound to Ground
« on: October 24, 2012, 06:26:26 PM »
The staircase heading down has wide, shallow steps that are well-suited to short legs.  The steps are made of a greenish stone with black flecks, polished smooth with slight but obvious grooves where repeated trips up and down are starting to wear.  The air from the tunnel of the staircase is notably hot, particularly compared to the chilly air under the Osa sky.

Using his darkvision, Darius leads the way down, mindblade not drawn. The party will likely be easy enough to notice from the noise they make without putting a large glowing weapon at the lead.

Dakekk dropped from his position in the trees to the forest floor when he saw Darius start down the stairs. "Why does it have to be underground?," he muttered to himself. To the group he said, "You think we should go down there?" He turned his eyes into the darkness and peered within.

Before he starts down the stairs, Saul relays to his psicrystal that he may be out of contact soon, and to tell Josiah  that the scouting group has reached the river and are now entering the tunnel.

Then he lingers behind his dark-sighted friends a bit, letting them check out the first section of tunnel before he finally lights his sunrod as it becomes too dark for him to see how to walk.

He replies to Dakkek "I hope that we will find the underground dwellers to be more hospitable than the Sky Shooters sound."

Lazaro sighs.  "I wish I could see in the dark, it's too damn hard to be sneaky when your hands glow."  He then concentrates and a glow suffuses the area around his gloves, putting out about as much light as a torch.

Saul, happy he hadn't struck his sunrod yet, puts it away. No sense wasting scarce resources.

"No doubt, Makala." Milo, still leery of his new surroundings, keeps a hand on a dart in his brace.

The heat is quickly oppressive as you explore into the tunnel, at nearly 40 degrees C.  The tunnel itself tops out at 2 meters high, though it's close to 4 meters wide (just over 20').  The tunnel branches right and left at 80 degree angles after 25', with sounds of mining from the left, and muted conversation to the right (Listen Check, DC 15, to make out the words).

Keeping an eye on the roof because of his height, Darius is unable to focus enough on the words to make out what is being said.

Dakekk strains to make out the voices but has no luck.

Hearing the voices, but unable to make them out, Saul says quietly "Great. At least we won't have to stay in this hellhole much longer. Can any of you make out what they're saying? If they're not talking about the best recipes for roast elf, or something equally horrible, I'll go ahead and announce us and try to talk to them."

Lazaro concentrates hard on listening, tuning out the conversation around him.

Both Lazaro and Makala can hear a heated conversation between at least three people, but neither of them can understand the language being spoken.

Saul looks to his companions, and not seeing a look of comprehension on any of their faces, he says "Well, here goes." and steps out where he can be seen, with his hands raised. As he does so, he says in all the languages he knows "Greetings. We come in peace."

The voices in the other room cry out in surprise, followed immediately by "LOOK OUT!" in a strangely accented Dwarven.  Three very short dark-skinned Dwarves appear from around the corner, dressed in sleeveless studded leather armor with straps hanging down below the waist to the knees to form a skirt of sorts over a coarse tan fabric; their shoes are an odd design that is essentially a closed-toe leather sandal, with leather strips wrapped around and around the ankle and shin to the knee, then buckled to metallic knee pads.

The one the furthest to your left has his armor dyed dark green, has a stone-worker's hammer at hanging at his right side, and holds a blowgun up but not to his mouth.  His hair is blonde and thinning, worn long and braided behind him, with a short cropped beard that leaves his cheeks bare. The one furthest to your right's armor is dyed a deep brick red, with his own hammer at his side and blowgun ready.  His hair is curly, short, and red, and his beard bushier than the one to the left, though his cheeks are also bare.  The one in the middle is nearly white-haired, with hints of blonde still in his loose, stringy hair, which he has slicked back with some sort of animal fat.   His face is bare but for a fu-manchu mustache which he both braids and ties beneath his chin.  He also has a hammer at his side, but in his hand he holds an ornate stone spike, made of mithral.  There's obviously a design to it, but his grip on it obscures the details.

He practically brandishes the spike toward Saul as he says in that oddly accented Draconic "What manner creature are you?  Raptoran spy?  Killoren sympathizer?  Dragon's slave?  What gives you right of passage in our tunnels?" (DC 17 Sense Motive check is appropriate)
