D&D 5e / Re: Quotes from my players after playing 5E

I had a 3.5e session recently and when I found out how crippling it is not being able to move and take a full-attack, I was surprised.

I like it because of the low maintenance. It's really hard to mess up a character in 5th edition, so even my optimization-newb friends can still be fairly competent.

In 3.x most of the times it's the opposite: you have to pay attention so that you don't end up being worthless.

For me it's like this:

Theory crafting, guide-writing, theoretical optimization fun: 3.x
Actually playing: 5th

I'm playing a vengeance paladin currently in a game that runs every week or so.
What I've found out from this edition is that there has been a shift of complexity from pre-game planning to in-game planning.
Can you say more?  I only played a preview or two of 5E, and have perused a little bit of the books.  But, when I was playing an Elven Ranger at some event I had the opposite feeling.  I just had essentially 0 options.  I had to pick up a shield to even try and give myself some level of meaningful tactical choice, at the expense of sacrificing the defining aspect of my character's abilities (two weapon fighting).

I agree that the ranger isn't fun at all.

Playing a paladin, well, let's just say that I've got a bunch of options when it comes to my bonus action. I can use divine favor, vow of enmity, smite spells and bonus attack with my polearm master. All those options are kinda 'equal' from an optimization standpoint - I don't count for instance the shield of faith spell as a candidate for taking up my bonus action.

There is some beautiful interaction with polearm master's opportunity attack when an enemy enters your threatened area; I love discharging thunderous smite on that attack and sending them back.

My action is used for attacking 95% of the time of course.

It's not that difficult to understand which is the best option that you have in the situation you're in. However, this character was generated in just 15 minutes.

It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

I haven't seen them in action, but some of the higher-level spells are really awesome, so delaying their acquisition might not be a good idea.

On the other hand I think that it's perfectly fine blasting people with metamagick'ed scorching rays.

It seems to be that if you decide to be a multiclass spellcaster, you're going to use the simplest (but effective) spells you can, given that they scale well into higher levels. It's kinda ironic that by increasing the build complexity, you're actually reducing your spellcasting complexity.

Blasting works quite good at the levels I've played (~1-9). Fireball, scorching ray and magic missile are quite reliable. Evocation specialization is nice.

Divination specialization 2nd level + save-or-suck spells are awesome. Phantasmal force is int-save.

Hypnotic pattern has no save and it's pretty good.

Summons. Conjuration specialization helps here; the benign transposition ability that you get earlier is quite handy for positioning, too.

Generally I think that it's a matter of what your main concentration and main non-concentration spell is going to be.

I'm planning to create a 'player's handbook' pdf that will contain the rebalancing compendium changes:

As this is quite old, please share more recent attempts; I will personally search when I get back from work.

Are you going to share the .tex (and relevant files such as the background images or the font) when you're done?
That would be terrific.

Anyways, well done.

Of course I will! The only thing I'm hesitant about is the fact that the fonts and images are not free.

LaTeX is short for Lamport TeX (Lamport's the guy who created it).

Hah.  Niice.  Except all that Latin wtf, my Grampa knew all that (the latin that is).

I suppose you've just christened the proper name of 5e -> 3e conversions.

That latin is this -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorem_ipsum
It's generally used as placeholder text in order to demonstrate the layout in typography.

I've used that, because you can just issue a \lipsum command and all that text is automatically generated, which is awesome :p

It's not yet complete (I'm missing stuff like tables), but the layout is pretty accurate.

I used Animate Dead with my war cleric, but I didn't have much fun. They ended up being unable to hit anything and just used them to provide advantage to me and my teammates.

I'm now playing a weird support character that's Alternative Human Lore Bard 5/Divination Wizard 2/Knowledge Cleric 1 - mainly provides bless to the party and uses Cutting Words/Portent/Lucky to force save or suck effects on enemies and in addition I've got every useful skill there is :P
I also found out that Magic Missile is great for dishing out some reliable damage, because almost no one has resistance to force and it's also auto-hit; it doesn't scale so good, but I have an Int score of 14, so that's a good deal.
I'm planning on picking up Scorching ray (I have a Cha score of 18) by leveling up Lore Bard to 6, because it scales really well!

You could also go multiclass with 3-5 levels of Lore Bard, Cutting Words is awesome and Vicious Mockery is very funny.
Also, you could get the Lucky feat to mess with rolls people make, but only against you.

Off Topic Fun / Re: Opposite of Meta-
« on: September 25, 2014, 08:01:42 AM »
Μετά (metá) is Greek for "after", so the opposite would be μπροστά (brostá), which is Greek for "before". I don't know what "brostagame" or "brostadata" would mean, but if you need a word, there it is.

"metá" is a lot of things in greek (adverb, preposition, prefix) and it has a lot of different meanings. The most common in modern greek is as a temporal adverb meaning "after", but we also use it for saying stuff like "is among them" or "with them".

"brostá" is mainly about positioning and it means "in front of", not "before".

"πριν (prin)" is probably the word that you're looking for.

Frankly, I used to use gnome on 12.04 as I have a weird hatred towards KDE, which I can't explain. The earliest experience I had with unity was on 13.04 and you could do those tweaks, but I can't tell about previous versions. It doesn't amaze me that you couldn't do stuff like that though.

Not liking unity is fine, but checking a tick-box and moving a bar to the left is hardly "work".

About the releases: you don't have to do them - any LTS version is well supported for ~5 years. I'm still running 12.04 on one of my home computers.

About Unity: I think that you're a little biased :P you can autohide the taskbar and control how big its width/color will be and the options are easy to find (compared to older releases that you had to follow three wikis and install various tools in order to do xyz).

You're right about money spending, but I just tend to ignore stuff that aren't free on the market place.

Well, most of the concepts are summarized here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Object-oriented_programming
but the truth is that you won't need most of them in order to write good-quality oop code. In my opinion, if you are able to understand what dynamic dispatch, encapsulation, polymorphism and inheritance are, you're at a pretty good level.

I'm talking about this R language: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R_%28programming_language%29 and it has some similarities with relational databases, but I haven't used the language much, so I don't know.

About Ubuntu, it might be just me, but I never had a problem with distro upgrades or unity. My laptop at work is running 14.04 upgraded from 12.04 to 13.04 to 13.10 to 14.04 with no problems. Unity offers something like the windows start menu with a search function and you can have the application that you use most in the taskbar. However, I find arch cool, too.

Off Topic Fun / Looking for whitewolf (oWoD) and d&d 3.5e books in europe
« on: September 13, 2014, 09:48:58 AM »
So, now that 5th edition is out, I decided to expand my book selection a bit.

Does anyone know any bookstore in Europe that sells rpg books? (even if they're second hand, I don't really mind) I've found a few ones online, but they're mostly located in the USA, which means that the cost to transport the books is too damn high for me.
