Ok, I am in a standard 5E Curse of Strahd campaign. The DM is interested in taking the campaign beyond 10th but wants my character, a Vengeance Paladin to become a dark lord by the end of the Curse of Strahd campaign. And wants my character to then become a NPC "big bad" for at least part of the levels beyond 10th. We are looking for a big way for my PC to become the villain. Looking for a really compelling reason that the party and my character would become strongly opposed - after the CoS module ends.

Any interesting suggestions or ideas?

PS - Are there rules anywhere on how one becomes a darklord?

D&D 5e / [Houserule] "Hidden" Initiative Method
« on: July 16, 2020, 12:32:16 PM »
Ok, what do you think of the following initiative method:

1) DM runs an excel spreadsheet with all characters and NPCs listed. Set up a column for a random d20 roll [=RANDBETWEEN(1, 20)] and a second column for each (N)PC's bonuses to initiative, add them up, and then sort largest to smallest.

2) Do not tell PCs who is in what order, keep the results hidden behind the DMs screen. Inform them as each (N)PC's turn comes up. And have that character take its action then.

3) Each round re-calculate initiative (Excel F9) using the method in step one.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

My Thoughts: I like this idea for several reasons but have not implemented in-game as of yet. I would run this by my PCs before hand but they trust me and give me a wide latitude on trying out new ideas. One thing this would avoid is the slow-down of "going round the table" one-by-one asking and marking everyone's initiative. We often re-roll initiative each round already, depending on who is running the game. It also would force a little more attention to the combat as everyone will have to be ready for when their turn comes up without much advance notice. Finally, it appears like it would speed up things.

What could a single cleric do to stop a global pandemic?

D&D 5e / Gnome Paladin

5e
Starting Stats: 7, 10, 12, 16, 16, 18
Starting Level: 8th

Was really hoping to zip around the battlefield on a small mount and some kind of lance? Super defense of Forest Gnome advantage on saves plus Paladin boost at 6th level? Maybe dip into warlock or sorcerer for some options?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Necky

Gaming Advice / RPG Systems & Death Mechanics
« on: January 16, 2020, 10:24:57 AM »
As DM, Player, and (wanna-be) creator of rpgs I have never found a system that handles character death in way that I am fully satisfied with. Most either trivialize death to the point it doesn't matter or make it punitive and not fun.

Have any of y'all found some gaming systems that handle character death in a manner that you think works really well?

Cheers,
Necro

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Creature Search

D&D 3.5

Searching for a creature that could act as a beast of burden. Ideally low intelligence and immune or highly resistant to both fire damage and negative energy. Evil alignment is fine.

Gaming Advice / Dividing a Character into to Two [D&D 3.5]
« on: November 14, 2019, 11:24:24 AM »
DM here. So one of my characters was fooling around in a alchemist lab without doing any research and failed a save and was divided into two separate bodies. I allowed him to divide his character levels up in any way he saw fit between the two bodies. Any interesting game mechanics I could employ to help him run the same characters out of two bodies? Or any other suggestions or tips that would make this more fun and interesting?

Thanks,
Necro

I am running the War of the Burning Sky 3.5 campaign and the PCs have just reached Adventure Six: Tears of the Burning Sky. On page 167 a magic item is mentioned, called the "Earring of the Whispering Winds" supposedly detailed in (see Appendix A). I cannot find this item in Appendix A nor can I find it anywhere else in the module.

Does anyone know where or what are the details of this item?

Thanks,
Necro

A friend of mine is running 1E AD&D for my group. It will be a one-shot (one single marathon session). Any good suggestions on how to handle PC death?

(no ToH spoilers, my first time)

A friend wants to run a a few one shot sessions. Setting is a "mad max" type. He wants a super simple ruleset. Any suggestions? I had suggested Risus but he wanted something else.

Gaming Advice / Trapped in a Pocket Dimension?
« on: August 17, 2019, 10:31:40 AM »
3.5 DM here.

Any suggestions for a novel way for my PCs who are trapped in a "void" type pocket dimension, to escape? They are too low level to gain access to plane shift. I want something that will challenge them and cost them dearly. Non-combat scenarios are more than ok.

Thanks,
Necro

ETA: More details about the plane. It is slowly draining the constitution of the PCs so the clock is ticking. The plane is mostly populated by undead and constructs because they don't have a con score to lose.

General D&D Discussion / D&D 5E ... Next?
« on: July 18, 2019, 02:35:32 PM »
What was/is the history with the "Next" naming convention for 5E? Was it preliminary and not official? Was it official and then dropped? Is still in play? What's the scoop?

Thanks,
Necro

I'm looking for adventures that have the PCs trapped entirely inside an illusion or dream. Not just an adventure the uses illusions per se but one where the PCs are held within a realm/location that is either entirely or largely not really real. Any suggestions welcome.

ETA: Would be cool if there were impossible scene changes and the PCs would be granted temporary "powers" applicable to the scene.

D&D 5e / Intrupting Spell Casting
« on: July 10, 2019, 04:17:08 PM »
In 5e, outside of counterspell, can you interrupt a spell being cast that is not a concentration spell?

My group has a problem with a hulking barbarian being right next to spell caster and not being able to interrupt the caster like you could in previous editions even with a ready action.

Gaming Advice / Recurring Enemy
« on: July 10, 2019, 09:16:05 AM »
[D&D 3.5]

Q: What are some ways that a recurring enemy can really piss off my PCs (without going too far)? I'm particularly looking for non-combat interactions.

Campaign Notes: In my particular game I have a sentient evil book that teleports around. Currently the PCs aren't fully aware of the books abilities or intentions and sometimes have even used it themselves.

D&D 5e / Artifacts (Favorites?)

  • What artifacts are your favorite/best and why? What are some of your least favorite/worst and why?
  • Any artifact related unusual or special combinations, tips, or tricks?
  • There isn't an artifact handbook anywhere is there?

Thanks,
Necro
