GURPS Optimization
« on: September 16, 2013, 01:09:44 PM »
First time GURPS player here need some advice on character creation. Not sure if this the best location but here goes.

Basics
GURPS 4th Edition, Basic Set
100 points for character creation
25 points of disadvantages (max)
GM's giving me Very Wealthy (30 points) for free

Setting
Modern day earth
100% Mundane (no magic, super-tech, psionics, etc.)
Something majorly bad is about to happen but the GM is keeping it top secret (Apocalypse, nuclear war, zombie rising, etc.)

My Character
Cocky, rich kid. 22 years old. Going to school for computers because of high test scores, innate ability, and father pushed him in that direction. Lifelong expensively indulged hobbies include, wrestling, marital arts, fencing, medieval/low tech weaponry such as swords, shields, etc., basically any and all low tech martial styles. Never fired a gun in his life. Had access to world class teachers, instructors, gyms, training camps and sparing partners.

60% Alpha Jock
40% Computer nerd

Thanks,
Necro

PS - I'd also be interested in any GURPS handbooks or threads with basic tips.

My GURPS knowledge is limited, but here's a couple of good links I found:

From my own experiences - a rank or two of Modular Abilities leaves you with a very versatile character.

(1) Thanks :)
(2) Modular Abilities? Isn't that an exotic ability?

I would say that your problem is that that character is not a 100 point character. That concept is (to be actually competent at that stuff) is probably more than 100 points.

If you really wanna be good at martial arts, choose one, or maybe two that you wanna be good at. Get those to the point that they provide bonus damage, and then buy a few techniques for each. Buy up some local area knowledges and the like.

At 100 points, you are probably best at focusing on one thing, or you probably won't be that 'good' at anything you do.
