Game Design / Wheel of Time How would you fix the system?
« on: September 20, 2012, 12:45:09 PM »
The title kinda says it all. Been playing the d20 version of it off and on for years, but I've never been satisfied with it. It has all the issues that come along with d20 and makes them worse. So I'm looking for your thoughts on what you would do to fix the d20 version of the game so it isn't so overpowered toward channelers or if you would go with another system (if so what?).

We have been running with the 2 d20 books and every net resource we could find for it, but it is a lot of stuff much of which is contradictory or incomplete. I feel like I'd have to rebuild the whole thing from the ground up to make it fit closer to the books and still have some balance between channelers and non-channelers. That is why I'm considering a new system since it won't be much more work.

Off Topic Fun / My daughter wants your votes!
« on: July 18, 2012, 10:24:24 AM »
As some of you know I have a daughter who was born with multiple heart defects. Because of this my wife and I have made it a point to do what we can to work with the American Heart Association. This year my wife entered our daughter into a contest to be the poster child, literally, for the AHA Heart Walk in our area. I'd be appreciative if you guys would go and vote for her.

The rules are that you have to like the AHA - Acadiana facebook page and then like Karleigh's picture to vote.
This is the picture my wife submitted (spoilered due to size):

edit: Voting ends on the 21st.

Creations & Ephemera / Arcanis RPG New book out
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:43:54 PM »
I just got my pre-order copy of the Arcanis RPG book Codex of heroes. I'm liking it so far, as it adds a lot of trade off choices. There is one talent that may be a bit too powerful even with the limited interpretation the authors have clarified. Time will tell though. Other than that it is just good stuff to allow people to make what they want.

Off Topic Fun / Swinging in to see what has been going on.
« on: March 01, 2012, 03:02:03 PM »
I know I have been gone for a couple of months now and I thought about this place and wanted to see what is going on.

With me I've been looking for work since Jan 1 without luck, fortunately I was working in the oil field and knew my job could disappear at any time so I planned for a similar situation to what happened. I'm getting married in a few weeks, on St. Patrick's day. Been playing lots of video games between looking for and applying for jobs. I've pretty much left D&D behind as I've got a new gaming system that I'm getting pretty involved in, it isn't perfect but I like what I'm seeing and I have a chance to speak with the developers frequently to have my opinions on what is wrong heard and addressed in some way.

Off Topic Fun / Mythbusters declare war on neighborhood
« on: December 08, 2011, 12:21:40 PM »
At least on accident. They apparently were firing a cannon at the bomb range and the ball went on a tour of a neighborhood 1000 yards away. Some of the articles linked at the story give updates.

Gaming Advice / Gimped characters are more fun [Fallacy discussion]
« on: December 06, 2011, 11:39:59 AM »
Here is a quote of me responding to a poster on another gaming board, for an out of the mainstream RPG.

For me making characters suboptimal is what gives them character. I have two separate flaws for my character (Heroic and Bloodthirsty) even though the second gives me no benefit. It is just more fun for me.

This isn't directed at you personally Nierite, your post is just expressing something I consider a problem across gaming systems and communities.

This is where I have a problem. You aren't just making suboptimal choices, you are intentionally adding mechanical restrictions to your character ("gimping" them) for no benefit. I find the fallacy of having to make characters gimped for them to be interesting is far too dominant. Yes weak/gimped characters can be interesting, but it is just as easy to make a character interesting without gimping them. I find that once you are intentionally making a weak character, keep in mind there is a difference between suboptimal and weak, you are being selfish to an extent. You are putting the other members of your party at more risk for you to have your fun, and as I explained weakness isn't the source of an interesting characters thus it is needless.

I enjoy playing suboptimal and flawed characters but I won't gimp them, because at that point I'm not being a team player in a team game.

Now no one has responded to this post yet, it is a slow moving board. Do you guys feel I have sufficiently explained a)what gimping your character? is b)why it is bad? c)What else should be mentioned?

I also figure this would be a good place to discuss this fallacy in general for those here. I just hadn't seen it in a while and forgot most of the arguments aside from "you can't RP if your dead".

Board Business / Where do rants go?
« on: November 07, 2011, 07:02:45 PM »
So where is the rants/venting area now that BLYHT is gone? I've already got one from today.

I thought Off topic fun was the most appropriate but didn't want to be a downer in there. Mature area also make sense as not just anyone can see it, which would seem appropriate. I just want to know what is the right place before I go complaining about my day.
