Got a letter from the IRS claiming that I owe them $20,000 from 2012 ($16k in back taxes and $4k in penalties and interest). Thing is, if you look at what they claim the issue is, it's INCREDIBLY obvious what happened. What I think happened is that the company I was working for at the time submitted a corrected 1099, which, for some reason, had a slightly different account number (but same correct SSN), the teensiest difference in company addresses (one says "333 West 52nd Street Ste 900" and the other says " 333 W 52nd St Suite 900"), and a $1 difference in the amount I made. So, adding those discrepancies together, they think I made twice as much as I actually did. It's
SO STUPID!!!!! If anyone bothered to
actually look at the thing before they sent it to me, it could have been resolved in 15 minutes. Instead, I get this letter - on a Friday,
of course - and almost have a heart attack. At least my accountant says it's an easy fix (she said she gets a couple of these a year among all her clients). But still...
