"Well, where'd you lose the necklace? You must remember that. Of course, if your answer is 'drunk, at a gambling hall', I haven't got a hope of being able to help you, so make sure it's somewhere sensible." There was a sigh, then a grin. "Don't worry about finding out whatever they stole, I'll keep looking, since I like the idea of picking up something valuable floating around the underside of our fair city. Would give one all sorts of leverage."

"Was about 3 weeks ago. I fell asleep on guard duty, and someone lifted it off me. I didn't think too much about it, except that I was inside the warehouse. So it had to be another guard or someone else who could get in..."

Isela grinned, showing teeth. "Now that is excellent. Means there's a nice small target pool to hunt down. Although it would be even better if you could tell me which ones to start with. I know that prat from the Ncane family is on the list, the highborn one who was going to denounce you. You've bitched about him often enough when dealing with me. But if there's any others you'd think are helping him, toss me their names and I'll see what I can do. Unless... you want to handle this part yourself?"

"Hmm... good point. See this is why I come talk to you. So I don't miss obvious things... So the likely suspects list is actually pretty short. Other than Umntanami, who you mentioned, there's Nciphisa, the most junior guard from last night. He may also have a personal grudge against me... although it was over something very recent, so I doubt he'd have had time to set something like this up. There was also Ptheryphos, and Alluitia, but if they hold any especially ill will towards me, I don't know of it. Of course... that doesn't mean much..."

"What was it that caused Nciphisa to hate you? You're generally a likable fellow, even with your foibles taken into account." A claw scratched at his chin as Isela thought. "If the grudge was too recent, he wouldn't have had reason to steal from you. And neither would Umntanami, because he would never dirty his hands with something such as this. No proper Pybyr noble would. Which leaves Ptheryphos and Alluitia. Neither of them has any little foibles that you know of?"

"Nciphisa would hate me because I tried to get him blamed for some things I nicked... And I don't know the other two very well. Maybe it wasn't personal: they just thought I'd be an easy scapegoat for something they'd been planning."

"Sometimes, lad, you're an idiot. You set someone up, inside their own clan, and didn't expect any backlash from it? No wonder the Ncane are going to pin everything on you, regardless of who stole the goods. And with your reputation, the accusation is going to stick unless there's perfect evidence proving your innocence. Hells, it's perfect for them. Gives them cover to launch an investigation into whomever actually did the thieving, and lets them make political capital with the Isinothi at the same time. No wonder the Ncane wanted you under their roof. They've been waiting for something like this for a while. The only way you're going to save yourself and your family is to prove it wasn't you, and to bring them the criminal who did it on a platter."

Inoksi sighs and says "I know you speak truth, but do you have to be so cruel about it?

So... now I get to be a detective... Maybe I can make a career of it afterwards, if I'm successful..."

"You'll be lucky if they don't kick you out of the city well before you find any evidence. Although at this point, being burned alive might be more likely. Your family's going to be doing quite a lot of bowing and scraping to make sure the Ncane don't change allegiance to another family, and if they think sacrificing you as a bad bet and admitting their mistake is in their favour, they're going to go right ahead and do so."

Inoski says "Yeah... thanks for the cheering up. So... I guess the thing to do is to keep tabs on the people that might have been involved, to see if they're doing anything suspicious. I can't follow all of them at once. So do you think you could help? I could follow Nciphisa for a bit myself, if you could get someone to check on the others. I don't have a lot of gold, but am willing to part with what I do have to see this through."

Isela grinned. It was, perhaps, not the most friendly of expressions. "I believe I can see my way forward to doing that. On credit to be named later terms, of course. And you want to follow Nciphisa? So be it. Although is this over the grudge or the theft? Make sure you know what your reasons are before you act." The Pybyr let silence settle for a moment, then spoke again, his teeth on full display. "Come back in a week, and I'll divulge any information my associates have found. Reasonable?"

"Sounds good" he says, flitting his neck frills in a gesture of friendly goodbye. Then he heads off o trail his mark, making extensive use of his magical hat to blend in inconspicuously wherever he goes.

After some days of searching and attempting to recollect the favourite haunts of Nciphisa, the now-determined Inoksi was able to actually arrive at the domicile of his former colleague following the trail of his passage, and thus have visual proof of his mark disappearing up a ladder and into an opening that rested in the roof of his abode. Said ladder, was, unfortunately, three stories tall, meaning that it would be quite difficult to approach said structure without someone noticing his arrival. The build itself was a stepped construction, built atop a ground floor that was clearly groaning under the weight of all the structures having been added to the top of it. Each of these additions was created in a style somewhat unique to it, some having doors and small windows on the front and sides, others, such as that of Nciphisa, being completely blank, except for a long series of slits around the base of the domicile and another set around the top. Having seen the style of architecture before, Inoksi knew it was intended to let cooler air blow in at ground level and the warmer air inside the building exit at the roofline.

Between him and the building which he was so carefully examining was a rather busy street, full of foot traffic as various Pybyrs went about their daily business. Likewise, the upper levels of the city were almost as busy, with the small reptilians trotting back and forth across thin planks and other raised platforms that spanned the gaps over alleyways and other drops. Occasionally, there would be a shouted dispute between an owner who preferred that their home not be used as a pedestrian thoroughfare, but on the whole, it was simply accepted as part of daily life in Idolobha.

Inoski clambers up the side of the building, and peers into one of the upper slits, seeing if it offers any view of the occupant. He tries to remain unseen at least to Nciphisa, and guesses that the chaos of a busy Pybyr street will serve to camouflage the oddness of his snooping.

Sadly the slit is narrow and deep enough that all he can see is the ceiling, and mostly the walls of the slit. A few of the Pybyr around him give him odd looks, but assume that he's just climbing higher up the structure, albeit in an odd way. They certainly see no reason to get involved as of yet.

Deciding that this is useless, he instead decides to climb down and wait for Nciphisa to exit. Then he'll have to decide whether to follow him, or sneak into his house and search it... His decision might depend on where he thinks the pybyr is going. If he's dressed for work, or he otherwise suspects he's off to work, he'll opt for searching his house. Otherwise, he'll probably follow him (hopefully discretely).

After some little time, long enough that the waiting nearly sent the Pybyr into a dazed nap, his former associate appeared out of the top hatch of his abode, dressed in a rather flamboyant cloak that he had almost certainly not owned a week before. Or at least, it was a cloak that Inoksi had most certainly not seen before. Sweeping it at a jaunty angle off his shoulders, the apparently newly enriched guard sauntered off into the crowds, almost certainly intent on celebrating good fortune at a gambling den or other house of ill repute.

Inoksi was quite envious.

Fuming and thinking to himself <That dirty rotten bastard... No doubt he was behind this... Oh how he will pay...> he follows quietly at a distance, trying to restrain the urge to go up and knife him on the spot...

The newly wealthy guard wandered through the city, smiling broadly the whole time, until he found himself in a dank gambling pit. It was one of those where Inoksi was known, although that was probably the case with every gambling den in the city. Sauntering inside, the guard tossed down a pile of coins, large enough to acquire quite a pile of chips and a large drink, and headed to one of the dicing tables, a long night ahead of him.

Around him, the place was crowded, noisy, and dim, light barely reaching many of the tables from the glowing sconces on the walls. The tables called to Inoksi, his sleight of hand easily a match for any dealer. But his anger kept him focused on the little bastard sidebirth who had gotten him blamed for something he hadn't done. And it was time to make him pay.

Getting control of his rising anger, Inoski decides the best way to start taking back what was owed him was... by sitting down at the table! That way, he could win some of the money and perhaps get a few snippets of information out of the little bragging fool... He'll make up a face, name, and any other details needed about his adopted persona as needed.
