D&D 5e / Re: The new UA Playtest to make 6e (or 1D&D)

The Nat 20 = Auto Success thing can be silly,  but it came with something WotC thought would mitigate it
"For a roll to be applicable the DC must be no lower than 5 and no higher than 30"

Which means if the DC is below 5, Auto Success
And if it is above 30, Auto fail.

And this applies to Saving throws and attack rolls as well.

So if you wrangle an AC of 31... Nothing can succeed on an attack roll against you.

Okay looking over this and I am already not a fan.

Tere's RPGbot's impressions.
https://rpgbot.net/one-dd-playtest-unearthed-arcana-character-origins/

As for my Takes from this?

Ardlings: Well it looks like Furry Force is the main force for Good in the new Faerun.  :???
Humans: They come in Small?  :??? and Dwarves Don't???    :huh Wait... Goth-Loli is now a Human subrace    :huh :twitch
Half Races: Wait, ALL Humanoids can interbreed?  :lol So the Goliath and the Gnome over there? :banghead

New crit rules: Why did rogues need Nerfing?

New Grapple Rules: Welp, WWE Bards are gone,  :-\ But wait. It's now an unarmed attack against AC? So armor makes you harder to grab? :twitch So Heavier armor is Slippery, and Dragon scales are made of Lube...  :banghead

Spell changes: New spell lists... and they went back to Arcane/Divine/Primal from 3e and 4e... interesting.  :plotting
Wait, add in the changes to rests....
They're going to have to rebuild the Warlock from the ground up.  >:(

Overall I expect this to be trash.

Now I'm wondering how a tabletop rules system would look if optimizers made it.
4e.

Seriously. Look at 4e, it was written, in many respects, as a 'fix' to all the unbalanced stuff optimizers found in 3e and 3.5

Ancestry is the new word for Race for reasons that I would probably find to be extremely stupid.  Backgrounds is self-explanatory, and classes and feats and skills are all still around as well.

Not sure if you will find it stupid, but the reason for the Ancestry thing?
To make:
Ancestry
Background, &
Class,

The ABCs of character Generation.

 :lmao

I LOVE IT!

So not a stupid reason then?  :P

I mean, PF1 and 4e aren't related in any way either, in terms of mechanics or flavor or setting or design philosophy or anything else, they could hardly be more different while still being D&D-clone games...but PF1 was created in direct response to 4e being the next big thing and the changes between 3e and 4e being perceived as bad ones, and was explicitly marketed to people who liked 3e over 4e and wanted to keep playing it (or something really close), so one can still talk about why certain decisions were made in PF1 relative to 4e, whether keeping or ditching certain things from 3e was good or bad, and similar.

How quickly we forget.
It wasn't because of backlash against the 4e Rule Set.
It was because Hasbro made WoTC pull that change of the OGL from 3e to 4e, massively restricting how people could make content for D&D
Then killed any chance of suggesting 'but we would never abuse the lopsided agreement to screw over anyone!' By suddenly pulling the Dragon, and Dungeon, magazine licencing from Paizo.
At the time, Paizo was planning to make Adventure Paths for 4e, but no longer trusted WoTC to not just steal them, so they needed a system to publish their Adventure Paths on.
So they pulled a Bender and said "We're gonna make our own D&D, with Blackjack, and Hookers."|
Had they not done so, people would have got used to 4e and played the Paizo Adventure Paths in it.

Something I noticed in Zanathar's

There is no minimum time for training tools and languages>

So if you get 5 tomes of int, and max out int before reading them... All languages and all tool proficiencies instantly learned.

Easy Mode:

Druid
Max out wisdom, DW about str or dex.

Take mostly utility and support spells.

Use Wild shape for some combats then switch out to being a support caster for the rest

At next level get natural spell and stay in Wild shape most of the time.

Now for a more specific answer, what are the rest of the players playing?

Wait he made a houserule that rogues don't get double sneak attack on Crits?

Hexblade is a decent choice, although Hexblade Hex is not going to double on crits. That would make Crit fisher not necessarily as good as you might like.

One should definitely avoid Paladin and Rogue in his campaign.

I would consider Human with the Lucky Feat. The feat is less useful overall than Elven accuracy. But the sheer power of humans with both normal, and variant, stats, is amazing.
Champ 3, then Barbarian.

New fun find.
Regeneratyion no longer cures blindness anyway
it only restores severed members, not missing organs.
You are now looking at Wish.

Okay, Jerk A stabs out the eyes of victim B causing the blindness condition.

Cleric C casts Lesser Restoration on Victim B, removing the blindness condition

What does Victim B's face look like?

true, wondering if we need a PF2 board

Also, am looking at some of the 3rd party kickstarter crunch for 5e and wondering if we should start discussing it.

Arise from the dead, thread
With this necromantic fun find.

Wiz Necro 14th level ability allows you to permanently take control of an undead.  :)
If said undead is intelligent, it gets a save   :bigeyes
If said undead is int 12+ it gets a save every hour  :shakefist
Mummy Lord is Int 11  :love
That means, with a Hex, your necro has a 50/50 chance of becoming a pet class.  :P
With a legendary pet.  :lmao

So it's not nearly as good of a deal; it too is just a 'scroll+'.
Ahh bummer. Totally missed that since it's right next to the part I tend to skip.

Still pretty handy through.
It seems like it could have some seriously fun situational uses.

I wonder if Gentle Repose, or Quintessence could extend that 1 minute timer.
Quintessence is broadly worded enough that it should work fine, Gentle Repose on the other hand only prevents decay and reanimation.
So we need quintessence to make the "Our halfling just ate a Whale heart in 18 seconds flat. What happens when we put tasty stew in our catapults and coat your castle walls with them?" intimidation tactic.
We have a plan.
