Title: Post templates wanted!
Post by: Prime32 on December 04, 2011, 02:42:01 PM
EDIT: These have since been implemented.

There's a feature available (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2233) for inserting preset "boilerplates" into posts (via a drop-down box in the editor). This could be useful for homebrew and character sheets.

There were a few templates for homebrew on the old boards - something like that. Anyone have any submissions?
We'd probably end up with something like this appearing in a drop-down box when you post:
Quote
  • Base class
  • Base class (4th-level casting)
  • Base class (6th-level casting)
  • Base class (9th-level casting)
  • Prestige class (4th-level casting)
  • Prestige class (9th-level casting)
  • Monster
  • Template
  • Spell
  • Psionic power
  • Maneuver
  • Character sheet (D&D 3.5)
  • Compact character sheet (D&D 3.5)
etc.
Bear in mind the new table tags (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1863) available.

This would be great!  Monster?  Player race?

I have a d20srd-style table for monsters in this thread (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1768.0), which I will shortly be adjusting to utilize the new table tags.

Don't forget to have martial adept tables, in addition to spellcasters.

Bhu's monster statblock and PrC/base class templates are pretty much standard, I think.

d20SRD-style monster table.  I have versions for 2 entries (2 columns of data) and >2 entries (2 columns, multiple iterations).  Should I post those as well?  They're not substantially different.

Especially with the new tables available, I find the preformatted and non-table class "tables" very ugly and kind of hard to read.  Here's a 20-level class table (non-spellcasting) that can easily be truncated for 10- and 5-level PrCs.

Vertical tables for base classes. Easy to plug and play. Just copy the "column" you want and paste it in. Uses nested tables, so borders make it look awful, unfortunately.

How to use vertical tables:

Step 1: Make the super-table. This holds every column, each in its own cell. You can easily have headers and footers above your vertical tables in this way.

(click to show/hide)

Step 2: Pick your columns, copy, and paste. Our example class will be a 10 level PrC with good BaB, good Fort saves, poor Ref and Will saves, and spells per day as a Blackguard, but you can also modify the sample columns given to suit your own purposes. Make sure that all columns are the same length, and that their headers take the same number of lines (sample columns provided all use 3 line headers). If one of your lines on the table is too long, it will spill over and make things look funny, so just make sure to set every other column to take up the same number of lines at that level (usually just by inserting newlines).

Garryl -- awesome stuff with the vertical tables.  I'm trying something out right now... but you should include code for the 2nd and 3rd VT posts.

I could include those orange tables as an option. Something like [table2=orange]...

Unfortunately, there's so much stuff in here, that they can't actually fit in with their original posts (it's over the character limit). Tables may look awesome, but they do chew up a lot of character space, especially when you use this vertical style where essentially every cell has its own row and its background color defined.

The vertical method is excellent! It makes the tables very modular. Want to add spellcasting? Just add another embedded table at the end. Great work all around - Garryl, Prime (table collapse is nice in lieu of cell borders)

Totally going to try this for my T5 project! I've been getting the feeling many people don't trust mediafire links based on view counts and download counts.
I might have some problems with the Special width, but it's worth trying - though a pixel hard-cap would be awesome if we could find code to support it. (I notice ="width=" with both percent and pixels doesn't work for either the embedded tables or indiviual cells.)

Any idea what causes the minor size difference in the Spells table though? And can [table2=1] and [table2=collapse] be combined?

Each row has a small, inherent height. Since the spells vertical table uses two rows for the header (instead of one), it has a slight bulge. You can get rid of that by adding [row2][/row2] at the top of the other vertical tables (just before their first header rows). I'll try to go through them and add in that spacing pseudo row when I have the chance.
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: Childe on December 13, 2011, 03:35:39 AM
I tried that, as well as up to 5 instances of [row2][/row2] for the others but Spells was still offset (and was the only one to be offset).

EDIT: Actually, I'm going to try one more thing.
EDIT2: Okay, I tried adding the row tags below the first set (with Special, Level, etc.) instead of above them, and I also tried adding the row tags below the entire set (1st/2nd/3rd/4th/5th, for instance, with the Level table), but none of those methods changed anything.

Is there a way to use something like this to get fixed width tables here on MinMax?: [TABLE="class: outer_border, width: 400"]
http://www.everypony.com/forums/showthread.php?621-BB-Code-Table-Bug

Some of these settings are interesting too: http://www.knowledgesutra.com/forums/topic/47184-new-custom-bbcode-table/

Sorry, it needs a cell in there, as well, not just an empty row.

[row2][cell][/cell][/row2]

If you're using a vertical table with multiple columns that needs this spacing, you'll also need that many non-cells in the non-row (or use the appropriate cellspan).

Very, very nice...

I will be robbing those vertical tables; as it was, I was making all my tables by hand in either GitP or the Competitor Games forums, and then porting them over here: it took FOREVER.

A few boilerplates are now available (see the new "Please choose..." box while posting). The software doesn't like angle brackets though, so I've had to take those out.

+1 bhu.

I'm thinking someone who knows how to work the tables (I don't have a grasp on how to make them yet) makes up a bunch of them, one 20, one 10, one 5, and then has separate tables that you can add for spells/maneuvers/powers/etc (is that possible?  or would you have to add them line by line?).  Point is to make it as easy to copy a table and fill it in as possible.  Also, add the templates for classes/PrC/monsters/etc, so they exist in some place other than just post templates.
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: Garryl on January 27, 2012, 09:06:31 AM
See my vertical tables (replies ~10-22). You can mix and match columns as you see fit. I made 20 level versions for most everything, and 10 level versions for the things that differ between base classes and PrCs. Changing the number of rows in them is easy enough, too , if you want to make shorter classes (such as 3, 5, or 7 level long PrCs). They should be good for your classes' needs, at least. Also includes premade columns for most magic and magic-like systems (spellcasting, psionics, martial adepts, incarnum, invoking, and even Marshal auras).
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: dman11235 on January 27, 2012, 09:04:07 PM
Is there a way to have it be flush (no space between column) and still keep the information presented by typing into the correct column?  Or would it have to be information by row if you did it that way?
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: Garryl on January 28, 2012, 12:50:33 AM
Use [table2=collapse][/table2] for the overall table to remove the spaces.

Okay, next question: anyone have any idea why there's a huge gap between the text above the table and the table itself?
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!

Take out the spaces between the nested tables.  All the lines get bumped to the top.

Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: dman11235 on February 26, 2012, 07:57:22 PM
Second the sticky....again.....  We need a resource like this in an easy to reach place.  Yes the templates exist, but this conversation is good, and the tables are very helpful.  Something I did notice: the color tag (for text) does accept hexcodes.  That's the sort of thing I want in a sticky, a comprehensive guide to the homebrewing.  I'll work on adjusting my guide to include this, and some hints on balance and stuff.

So question on the colors for these templates.  When I made the original templates, I used colors as a sort of code, each thing had its own color, with reds being classes, and dark colors being spells/feats/maneuvers/etc.  I primarily made them this way because there are lots of different types of small abilities and there were more dark colors that looked good (also soulmelds ended up being straight blue, so that's a plus....).  So haveyou thought about that at all?  Anyone.

Okay, so I'm trying to get it so that a table has a bunch of columns (in this case 3), all collapsed nicely, with a footnote that spans the entire length of the table.  This is my current effort:

Material
Sand, loose dirt
Packed earth
Soft stone
Hard stone
Crystal
Hardness
0
3
10
15
30
HP1
82
52
5
8
1
1. Per inch of thickness.
2. This material is twice as thick.

As you can see, I'm still trying to get the superscripts right as well.
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: Garryl on March 12, 2012, 07:02:51 PM
For something simple like that, I'd recommend using the tables normally instead of using vertical tables. You can use cellspan to have your cells cover multiple columns.

MaterialHardness
HP1
Sand, loose dirt0
82
Packed earth3
52
.........
1. Per inch of thickness.
2. This material is twice as thick.

Code: [Select]
[table2]
[row2][cell]Material[/cell][cell]Hardness[/cell][cell][center]HP[sup]1[/sup][/center][/cell][/row2]
[row=#fdeef4][cell]Sand, loose dirt[/cell][cell]0[/cell][cell][center]8[sup]2[/sup][/center][/row]
[row=#f2e4bc][cell]Packed earth[/cell][cell]3[/cell][cell][center]5[sup]2[/sup][/center][/cell][/row]
[row=#fdeef4][cell]...[/cell][cell]...[/cell][cell]...[/cell][/row]
[row2][cellspan=3]1. Per inch of thickness.[/cellspan][/row2]
[row2][cellspan=3]2. This material is twice as thick.[/cellspan][/row2]
[/table2]
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: dman11235 on March 12, 2012, 07:28:00 PM
Thanks, I forgot about cellspan.  Out of curiosity, that would work leaving it as a vertical table, wouldn't it?  The superscripts would increase the size of the final cells, but the cellspan thing would work.
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: Garryl on March 12, 2012, 08:21:25 PM
You can try it, but the lines will probably be off slightly.
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: dman11235 on March 12, 2012, 08:36:28 PM
I did it in a preview, and it was, but I think that might have been because of the superscripts.
Title: Re: Post templates wanted!
Post by: Garryl on March 12, 2012, 09:04:28 PM
Yeah, superscripts add a few extra pixels of height. The problem with vertical tables is that the rows of each column aren't aligned with each other. You essentially have to do it manually. That's fine when you keep the tables simple, but when you add a little complexity... :x

You can use hex code colors to alter it, use row=#FFFFFF, replacing the FFFFFF with the correct code.  Wikipedia has a list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_colors), and I'm sure you can find a more comprehensive list somewhere else.

Post the template, I want to see it.

Also, Prime, I finally remembered to bring this up, but in the class/PrC templates, there's the phrase "how your class is persevered" instead of "perceived" in the last portion.

Finally, I have a question for everyone: who pays attention to the "sample encounter" section?  I've been thinking of just getting rid of it from mine, but it's in the books, so I'm hesitating.  I know I never use it, but that's mostly laziness.

Any additional information about the weapon goes here.  This includes things like the Trip bonus that trip weapons have, the Disarm bonus for whips, and information about ammunition.  This is where you indicate how much ammunition you get for the price listed.

NOTE: Do not use values that the armor or shield does not need, so for example do not use Shield Type for armor and Armor Type for shields.

Prime, could you please add my vertical table components (see replies #10 through #22) to the drop-down menu list? It would be great not to have to look back here every time I want to use one of those templates. You don't necessarily have to do all of them, but the table shell (#22), and the standard base class columns (#10) would be great.

Is there a way to make a weapons table similar to the PHB?

I actually was going to, but then decided that it looked terrible, which was the first and most significant reason.  When I eventually go through everything again, I'm going to make one, but I'm keeping weapons to be chart-less.  Basically, each category will have a section on a chart, but individual weapons will have an entry, but not on the chart.  Each weapon will reference a base type (1-handed slashing, or 2-handed slashing and bludgeoning, that sort of thing), the base types will be on the chart, but the weapons, and any new ones, will be modified base types.  That was the second reason I didn't make a chart.  The third was because it would be hard.  I mean, how do I do a freaking chart as a template?  I can put charts IN templates easily, but making a chart as a template?  A 1-line chart?

I can make one if you want, it's just...not necessary in my opinion.

I have a few tables in here (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=2912.0).  Are they the kind of thing you're looking for?

They might be adaptable yes.  I have a metric ton of stuff to do in the Japan thread,

In an act of minor necromancy, I'd like to ask if it'd be possible for a brief tutorial explaining exactly what each tag does, having missed the generation of the system entirely. Vertical tables seem like a handy trick, but might not work for what I have in mind, though I can probably just steal the code used to convert dman's table from vertical to standard a page back.

EDIT: I know it's possible to figure things out from the examples linked at the beginning of the thread, but I'm not sure what features have been implemented since, or if I'm correctly deducing the meaning of various tags from their use. It'd be nice to have straightforward definitions, if that's possible.

Actually, I think we need a tutorial on how ALL of the tags work.  Most would be simple, and then the tables would be the only thing I can think of that get incredibly complex.  This tutorial would serve as a board wide collection of how to use the, well, boards.  I'm pretty sure just about anyone who's been here for a bit can tackle the majority of it, but the tables, I think Garryl needs to do that one.

I might be able to tackle this this weekend, but I don't know all of the code, so there would have to be some collaboration.  And emphasis on "might".

For tables, check out Garryl's posts earlier in this thread, starting here (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1864.msg19843#msg19843). One thing to note (which Prime32 does here (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1864.msg20670#msg20670)) is that using [table2=collapse] makes the ugly borders between vertical tables go away.

MM4+ style creature stat block. It's not perfectly consistent with the stat blocks in books, but the stat blocks in books aren't perfectly consistent, either.

Okay, next question: anyone have any idea why there's a huge gap between the text above the table and the table itself?
Due to the way table2 is converted into HTML the extra line breaks within the code tags are displayed before the actual table.

For example.
