[3.P] Strata / Collection Services: The Story of Wystan Hyde
« on: September 24, 2016, 10:20:23 PM »
At long last, you had another job.

Wystan's life had taken a turn for the worse.  Rubicon had always been a steady source of income for bodyguard work, with all the various old and decrepit nobles of the previous generation always worried about them backstabbing each other for political gain.  A sorry state of affairs for them, but it suited your wallet just fine.  But the jobs were becoming a bit scarce, as were the nobles.  The shroud, that black scar which blighted this world a decade previous, had bloated again in recent times and it brought Rubicon in fearful unity, leaving little time for the usual foolishness of the elite as they all trembled in worry for the future.  Regardless how Wystan felt about the situation surrounding the shroud, it didn't affect you directly.  At least, it didn't until that one fateful night.

It was a normal job as any other.  You were escorting Duke Zillart across the land when you encountered that strange golden knight who blocked your path, demanding some manner of scroll the Duke supposedly carried.  You did your duty and fought well, though he wounded you before he retreated from combat suddenly.  You do not know with whom he was communicating with or even the knight's name but you do know he dressed in the armor of a Chrysanthemum knight, that lost nation consumed by the darkness.  As he departed, the knight had even mentioned Dragon Tower, tallest tower in the world, held within that forgotten nation.  That is of course impossible.  None who enter the shroud ever leave.  Perhaps he was an accursed gone mad by his visions.

Three days later, you had your first nightmarish vision, and woke up with the telltale spiral mark of the Accursed somewhere upon your body.

How long have you had it?  It is known that those who become Accursed often hide their mark, for if others knew they would surely exile you, or worse.  It wasn't without good reason.  The marked slowly seem to lose their minds, their visions and nightmares escaping into reality, until they went mad.  And others would experience terrifying deformities as part of their curse.  It was often better then just to let the marked give into the one universal urge that all seem to have, the one universal vision they all shared.  To enter the shroud, to find exactly what their dreams foretold.  Their dreams seemed to be of Chrysanthemum, cold and dark, and a howling wind within.

To this day, all Accursed who have entered the deep shroud have never returned.  They are the only beings which seem not to be able to be noticed by the terrible Titans which roam under the shroud, and they are the only ones who have made settlements beyond Sothis, the last bulwark of humanity against the dark.

Perhaps you were found out, and your exile has begun.  Perhaps you travel of your own violation.  What is certain is that you managed to pick up one final odd job before your journey begins.  Duke Zillart has long had rivalry with a certain Baron Manus Marlowe and Countess Alzbeta Marlowe.  Their manor has long been silent, save for a few indirect replies via messengers.  They have had neither visitor nor ally in some time, and rumors have begun to swirl that the mansion was actually abandoned, haunted, or cursed, and that the Countess has become one of the marked who has fled her home.  They have been paying their taxes to a point but they had missed their last few billings, and the collectors were tired of sending officers demanding entry.  Your skill with the sword was not forgotten, and it was believed that the Baron would be more pliable to suggestions of payment if it were delivered with the threat of blade at its back.  Zillart, of course, was all the more pleased to help you traverse to their estate.  After all, it is on the way to the shroud.  You only need to write back (and possibly mail back) proof of your success at your next nearest opportunity.

To this end, you have been granted ride from a carriage to your destination, leaving the city of Glintham in Rubicon.  You can busy yourself before the trip if you wish, otherwise your driver (a portly fellow named Wittershins) will begin your trip.  You do not expect to run into any problems along the way.

Trip begins in an hour or two.  This is the last time you will probably see this place.  Soak it in.

Awesome.  I'll be free hopefully within the next 24 hours.  I've got an idea.  I'll run a bit of side story with you, both for character building and settling you in, and so that I and get the party out of that mansion.

Psysama, hint hint, we need you.  Git at it.

You are not alone in the room.  Besides the existence of your allies, there is a shadow here from an object you can't see, a large batch of tentacles rising out of the hole in the room, invisible and worming.

And there is holes in the walls that shouldn't be there.  Within one such hole, a glassy humanoid figure, vague and distorted and entirely too tall and thin, is creeping and watching.

I had a map somewhere, and it's MIA now.  Here, have a ghetto map from memory, it's probably inaccurate but close enough.

Wow that's really bad.  I'm pretty sure none of those continents are correct.  I just remember that they were vaguely in three major continents, and roughly where the party was.

Strata is a flat earth shaped rather like the Outlands.  There's an infinitely tall mountain in the center of importance, and the edges are waterfalls that go into the void.  Circling it is the sun (a hole to the plane of fire), the moon (a hole of the plane of earth) which rotate above, and two spheres which orbit the rim, two eternal storms (plane of air and plane of water).  Due to events in the backstory, something happened at that giant uber mountain and now there is an ever expanding shroud of darkness coming from the center of the world.  It's ruined two nations already and everyone else is afraid it'll keep growing.  And the Accursed, which started at the same time, tend to have visions of things within the shroud.  So the accursed travel into the shroud for answers...

The party is currently in Rubicon (read: England).  They had decided earlier that they would go from their starting city over the land route, through Rubicon, Taphos (read: Egypt), and eventually someplace called Dragon Tower within Rhetor, the City of Magic, within ruined Chrysanthemum.  Their next upcoming town is a place called Roanoke, at the border of Rubicon and Taphos.

You're still in civilization at the moment.  The moment you hit Taphos, expect civilization to quickly die out as you enter the shroud.

Expect darkness, or at least dim illumination, when within the shroud and prepare for it thusly.

Here's a previous post which details some of it.  It was before they left for the mansion, the Marlowe Estate.

Is the party still Level 5?  What continent/country are they in?  I assume that I'll be marked as well?

Edit: Apparently this is the first Pathfinder character I'll have made on these boards, I had to make a Pathfinder character sheet template.  That surprised me.

Indeed.  A basic summary of the game so far.

The party members are all Accursed, bearing the mark and exiled/compelled to wander/seeking answers/whatever.  They began their pilgrimage to the center of the world, running into a few hazards, saving another adventuring party, and one very suspicious villainous sort which they've come to calling "Blueberry".  After which they continued their trip and came upon a haunted mansion, which turned out to be full of ash and blood and fire and locked doors and oh yeah there's an undead serial killer in here.  And talking rats.

They're currently trapped in said haunted mansion within a barrier, and just managed to kill the stalking scissorman, leveling up to 5.

I figure they will leave shortly (once they solve a small issue) so I hopefully can introduce you as they exist said mansion.  Knock on wood.

Woop woop!

Any idea on backstory?  You get some weapon proficiency perks depending where you hail from.  It's nothing too big, but probably a nice little boon.

No worries, I can understand not wanting to relearn a system.

Pathfinder soulknife!  With an archetype that's not in the srd.  I don't know how accurate this is because I'm too lazy to compare it to the book but it give you the idea.  I'm a psychic armory.

This isn't central to my idea, but have you looked through Path of War?  If not, no worries.  I can do fine without it.

Learning a new class is much easier than learning a new system.  Looks solid, I'll allow it.  What book is this from?  Was this Path of War? Derp it's right there, Psionics Augmented.  Anyway, looks good.

I haven't read Path of War but I've heard of it, and if I recall nothing abnormal in there.  Go for it.

Eiji, have you looked at the Spheres of Power system?  If so, opinion?  If not, don't worry about it, I've got plenty of other ideas for submissions.

Ah, I return.  And I am not familiar with Spheres of Power.  What is that?

It's got a wiki.

It's an alternative magic system (with it's own attack/defenses called Magic Skill Bonus and Magic Skill Defense, my assumption is that you'd just scrap those).

...

I'm not set on playing a spheres of power character so if you don't want to deal with a new system right now I can go soulknife.

Ah I see.  Yeah, probably not if only because I don't know it.  That said I'll look over it eventually, thanks for the link.

Going vanilla soulknife or one of the rebuilds of it?  I'll help you with any fluff you like!

Gaming Advice / Two Handing the Large Rapier
« on: September 15, 2016, 09:30:34 AM »
Eiji the Human Fighter picks up a large rapier.  For him it would be two handed.

Question A) Is weapon finesse retained?  Unlike Light to One-Handed, being finesse is called out in the rapier.  And there are a few finesse two handed weapons out there.

Question B) You can't two-hand a rapier.  Would that still apply even though its oversized?

Drossel seemed distracted, and as Axejack addressed him it took him a second to actually focus on him, shaking his head to clear his mind.  "I am sorry, what were you saying?" he said as the chirps of celebration from the rats above died down.  "Safety.  Yes, there is a safe spot.  And I need a moment to commune with god.  You are probably very tired and we don't know how it is out there yet.  I can guide you to the master bedroom.  Or, to the place I have seen the scissorman the most.  You have already found the place of his birth, the burning corpse heap which you found yourself in.  Let's see... Chim, come here!  Please guide our heroes to the bedrooms.  I must address my brethren."

He glanced around the room.  The spider has absconded at some point.  No matter, it probably walked the dark spaces between the walls at this point.  And then there was the two dazed humanoids here.  "And those two.  What will you do of them?  Do they suffer?  Do they recover from this?"

The answer to that was 'sometimes'.  Other times, they either go mad, or turn into... things.  And OOC, the answer is no.

One of the rat guards runs up to the party, presumably this 'Chim'.  He's ready to lead you upstairs.

Psysama, you have a dark insight roll to make.  I'm gonna move on though.

Oh yeah, on the party makeup.  While the spider warlock seems to be out, about the pious talking rats: Technically Drosselmeyer (or any NPC whose levels equal yours) can be recruited if you see fit.  That won't necessarily happen on its own, but I wanted to let you know that's a thing you can do.  At the moment though, he's just an NPC and not part of the party.

If you're wondering, he's a truenamer.  My rebuilt truenamer.  Little sneaky bit of DM Information; sometimes I use NPCs, enemy and ally, to test out my homebrew classes and systems to see how they hold up.  Well enough it seems, since now I have another player in a different game playing one.

Anyway, random trivia because I'm feeling talkative.

When it came to Elizabeth, and frankly when it came to Barnes as well, Lionel mostly humored them and their strange beliefs.  But lately the unexplained was right in his face.  The obvious was Eliabeth's strange rat trick, but other things have been weighing on him as well.  He had taken out a notepad and was scribbling things within, muttering something darkly to himself.  So here he was, getting involved with this binding ritual.

"They don't believe he's human, eh?  That's bad for him.  We execute humans, other things don't get due process." he cursed, muttering something about how Barnes has been too kind to this one.

His mistrust wasn't entirely unfounded.  The next morning, and there were more deaths in this town.  He didn't know how he was doing it, but he was certain that the prisoner was somehow involved.  If he were to believe that magic was a thing, then it opened up the possibility that that man was somehow able to kill outside of his bindings.  It just opened up too many questions, and he admitted this time he couldn't find the answers.

He went to go see Elizabeth.  Fortunately looks like she was also at the murder scene.  Two birds with one stone.

"Liz.  I need to confide in you.  You believe in Barnes occult crap, right?  These murders... what are they?"

A detective, investigator, inquisitor, or other such similar role in which you desire information through interrogation at the lack of willingness to torture physically because that's just too easy to turn evil with.

Although it'd also depend a lot on what the character's class already is and how you've already been RPing that character.

Ok then answer this is it possible for a character to convincingly flipflop between alignments
Like go from chaotic good to chaotic neutral and then back to chaotic good?

Yes, though usually not very quickly.  Why?

Hello?  Roll?
It's not responding.
I'm here, but your dark insight check link doesn't work.  Do I need to add something to it?

Psy!  Where you've been all month?

Oh, blasted links... how did I lose the "https" part on the link again!?  Fixed.

Your dark insight is +0, so it's a straight d20 roll for you.

The Strata game is getting a bit short on players, and I am running into a prime opportunity to add some more.    Not to many, probably no more than one-two max, but still.  Anyone interested?  I can answer questions and whatnot.

For one, the battle shears aren't linked properly.

For two (for the party), I'ma note treasure in the Char Sheet thread. I'm the 2nd highest post in there so easy to find for everyone.

For three, this might be a good time for a roll call.

Fix'd!

Ketaro, so thoughtful!  Thanks!

And I agree!  ROLL CALL!  From what I can tell we've lost Raineh (she hasn't responded to hails).  Psysama is a mystery who is vanishing for months only to return.  I may need to open things up for new players again, though at the moment I am thankful for both of you for sticking through.
