Spells by Duration
The distinguishing factors between a 1 round/level spell and 1 minute/level spell can make all the difference in the world. It’s good to know how long your wall of fire will keep away the orcs, and whether or not that kick-ass buff spell will be enough to last you throughout the dungeon complex.
The shorter the duration, the less room there is for error: rounds per level spells are should be used when you’re absolutely certain that you’ll need them. 24 hour spells like Mind Blank you can afford to cast at the first available opportunity; by the time the spell duration ends, you’ve probably regained all your spell slots.
Also keep in mind that Extend Spell's utility widely varies depending upon the duration. 1 round/level to 2 rounds/level means that your 5th level wizard's spell goes from half a minute to a minute. If the metamagic feat's applied to a 10 minute/level, the spell jumps from 50 minutes to 100 minutes. A 12th level wizard with extended overland flight can pretty much get an indefinite fly speed for the rest of the campaign if he remembers to prepare it every day and doesn't get hit with a dispel.
