Appraise , what-can-you-do-with
« on: January 09, 2016, 03:53:04 PM »
 :???

Red Dragon Shaman 3 is exploitable.
Red—Treasure Seeker (Ex): You gain a +5 competence bonus on Appraise and Search checks (always active).
... "(always active)"  is not the usual wording for a +X bonus to a skill check.
This implies a certain amount of "always on" different and better than normal.
At level 13, DS can extend this to allies within 30 feet.
Kinda interesting.

Disciple Of Mammon 7 , ecl 11 (ecl 8 with Rebuilding)
using the Enhance Value ability for 1 hour boosts
an items gp value by 1% per point of the check result.
Doubling wbl is a yawner normally, and this is.
However, skills can get some interesting t.o. going
which can get a 10:1 like "The Enabler", or even more.

What else ?
 :)

Dragonkith PrC 3 gets :
Detect Treasure (Sp): Once per day, a dragonkith of 3rd level or higher can use a detect treasure ability. This works like the detect magic spell, except that it senses Medium or smaller objects that are worth more than 100 gp. On the first round, the dragonkith detects the presence of such objects; on the second round, the power reveals the number of objects and the location of each. In each subsequent round, the dragonkith can make an Appraise check to estimate the value of one object.

... so that's a 1/round check per single object.
Detect Magic lasts 1 minute per level, and while
no level is specified for this, it happens at ecl 9+.

Obsidian (gem) Dragon gets an automatic 1 rank of Appraise per HD.
"An obsidian dragon has the Appraise skill for free at 1 rank per Hit Die."
If this was a bonus, instead of normal count, it'd be interesting.
http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psb/20030124b
... lets say it IS a bonus, then the O.D. would qualify for a few PrCs a smidge early.

Seonor at giantitp suggests:  "One use I found was to estimate gear on npcs."
Niice.  Use it on all the other monsters too, and people on the streets walking by.

There were some alternate rules in a WotC article about using it to identify magic items.

There were some alternate rules in a WotC article about using it to identify magic items.

Said alternate rules also include a feat (Appraise Magic) that grants Appraise as a class skill, which may be useful in its own right.

Appraise Magic Value is a less ambiguous option (being printed in Complete Adventurer instead of a suggestion for a house rule) that lets you try to identify magic items with Appraise.

Christ... they still had to throw a cost in there? I mean really... WHY!?  :shakefist Why did they ever think that was a good idea in the first place?  :banghead

(follows PhaeXY's link)
Feat:
Appraise Magic [General]
You are skilled at evaluating magic items and discovering their secrets.
Prerequisite: Appraise 3 ranks.
Benefit: You can use the Appraise skill in place of the Spellcraft skill to identify magic items. Appraise is always a class skill for you.

Did CapQ get this one in his EVD?

from Dr#358 Psionic Alchemy

Mimic Clay   30 gp   1 lb.           craft dc 25

This substance possesses a dull gray color and the consistency of natural clay. To activate mimic clay, you must touch it and expend your psionic focus. The clay takes on a translucent color and its consistency softens. When you visualize a hand-sized tool or object, the clay changes shape, texture, and color to duplicate the visualized item within 1 round. The clay retains the same mass and weight regardless of its transformation, so you must use an amount of clay equal to the weight of the object you wish to duplicate. The clay has the potential to mimic any mundane object of Tiny or smaller size, although it cannot duplicate items with multiple parts or complex, moving pieces. If you wish to duplicate a precise item such as a key, you must make a DC 15 Craft check of the appropriate type (such as locksmithing). A successful DC 20 Appraise check reveals an item created using mimic clay as a facsimile. The clay crumbles to dust 1 hour after activation.

... given how few anybodies have Appraise = very interesting.

Garryl's ... huh that has similar wording to Epic Spellcraft :

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/skills.htm#spellcraft

50+CL for basic properties
70+CL for all properties
... except  that the feat is clearly superior.

F+K have a [Combat] Feat called Combat Looting, which at +11 bab :
" If you are grappling with an opponent, you may activate or deactivate their magic items with a successful Use Magic Device check. You may make Appraise checks as a free action."

PF has a pile of stuff, some 3rd party, most rather small, here's some that caught my eye :

Lair Snake trait ... going straight onto my Money Bags idea
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/regional-traits/lair-snake-dragon-s-lair?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2Fprint%2F

Bard Negotiator 1 Fast Talk ability ... is a well done approximation of a standard scammer you find on the street of every city.  Perfect for a low level NPC challenge.
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/bard/archetypes/paizo---bard-archetypes/negotiator?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2Fprint%2F

Object Reading 2 (generally) spell ... "This spell returns the same information as the psychometry occult skill unlock" without needing that occult stuff.
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/o/object-reading?tmpl=%2Fsystem%2Fapp%2Ftemplates%2Fprint%2F

Halfling Rogue Filtcher 3 Rummage ability ... swift action, and can appraise things you can't see, which I think is rather obviously abusable.

Maybe a few you don't have just yet.
I'm absolutely sure CaptnQ will have something or another in his EVD.

Lords of Madness: the Book of Aberrations has slaves. The basic method for determining the value of a slave is based on the creature’s CR, using the following formula: Cost = (CR, minimum 1)2 × 100 gp

Therefore, you can use Appraise to find a creature's CR, by appraising their value if sold into slavery. Useful for predicting how hard a fight would be.

 :twitch ... that's near brilliant.

The fluff is horrible ( it almost goes without saying ).

The thing that could turn a CR X monster into a slave = CR of X + something?
The poor Urban Savant has to wait so long to get it's metagame-y abilities.
