The Professor orders Lifter towards the wagon and the pair move forward. Even though he was 90% sure this was an ambush, he was not without concern for his fellow bearded man. Lifter grabs hold of the wagon to keep it from falling.

Hmm.

Bleckerich hops off the cart he's on and adds the strength of his muscles to Lifter's. "The beasts! Somebody look after the beasts!"

With the extra strength provided by Tarvon’s song, the great muscles on Lifter and his Tokunnir ally arrest the fall of the wagon into the deep pit, and begin to draw the contraption backwards towards freedom.

As the front wheels inch away from the abyss over which they hovered, the added strain frays the traces that are holding the draft animals in place, and with a sudden snap and a howl of anguish, one rips free. The creature is dangling by a single line, and already the bulk of the animal is pulling causing the thread to separate.

The same fate looks as if it will apply to the companion animal as well.

The drover, for his part, mutters curses as he looks up at the animals above him, the extra long wagon reins have carried him into the pit below the creatures. If one of them should fall and hit the Tokunnir, he was likely for the pit as well.

Seeing Bleckerich seemed to have an idea, the Professor offers to take over for a bit.

Bleckerich moves to the side of the wagon and lets loose another intonation in the direction of the wagon. The ground beneath the wagon becomes coated with slippery ice, making it very easy to pull it back to solid ground.

Lifter’s created muscles, assisted by the strength of Tarvon’s song and the Tokunnir might of the Professor, strained at the cart as it slipped across the ice created by Bleckerich. Heavy though it was, and laden with goods, it moved under their combined might, stride by stride moving away from the depths that had opened up beneath the draught animals.

Unsecured and unsupported before the process began, it was those same draught animals that were to cause the undoing of much of the good work. The traces already heavily damaged by the impact from the fall, they ripped free of the wagon, sending the beasts hurtling into the darkness, the last noise that could be heard the dying scream of the drover, smashed free from his precarious grip on the reins by the falling animals.

The wagon, at least, was safe with all goods, even if there was nothing left to pull it.

After the ice has molten off, Bleckerich steps to the edge of the pit and peeks down, but there is nothing to be done. He mumbles a few words to honor the dead drover and drops a handful of dirt in the direction of the corpse. He turns then towards the others and the caravan leader.

"So, what do we do now? There is nothing to pull the wagon and no spare draft animal. Best we can do is to move everything perishable on an operational wagon and return later for it."

"No need."

The Professor ties the harness to Lifter and has Lifter pull the wagon.

Bleckerich spends another hour summoning a large pile of ice bricks. "When we reach the outpost, the first thing we are going to acquire are bricks and boards" he grumbles after he is done.

As the wagons begin to move across the bridge, the Professor hears the faintest whisper. It could be voices, but he's not quite sure. Either way, it is a noise that wasn't there in the moments before the caravan crossed the temporary construction.

The Professor raises a hand as a warning, and then draws his weapon. Lifter pulls the wagon a bit forward, then lets go of the reins.

The Professor's warning was only just in time, as swarms of tunnels built into the walls burst open, and a horde of short, pale pink creatures with aberrant-looking faces appear around them, wielding weapons ranging from spears to swords to others that perhaps didn't even have a name, and were instead just some crude construction. A strange feeling seemed to surround the creatures, one that clawed at the psyche and abilities of those who were too close to the emerging tunnel mouths.

Those tunnels seemed stuffed with the creatures, and although they were brandishing weapons, they weren't yet launching attacks that they could have managed.

Tarvon moves away from the creatures and is surprised to realize that he can use his magic again.

"Watch out! Being near them can disrupt magic!"

He then uses his song to boost his allies, not wanting to be the first one to make a threatening mood.

The creatures swarm form in huge numbers, spears in their hands jabbing and thrusting in copious number. The enemy seems at times a writhing pile of flesh, packed so tightly together that it's hard to tell when one enemy ends and the next begins. Only animals used to the narrow conditions of underground living could be used to such proximity.

Under their spear-thrusts, the drovers fall with rapid speed, but the more heavily armoured members of the party find that they can shrug off the attacks with little danger... for now.

At the conclusion of their attacks, random warriors amongst the horde suddenly spew vast clouds of black ink from nodules on their skin, filling the areas with a noxious fog that obscures much sight.

"Bleckerich, help the others! We will hold the front!"

The Professor loads a round of pellets into his Spearbolt, and moves close to to the ink where he releases the pellets.

Bleckerich, without hesitation, heads south and blasts the beasts threatening the back row with a cone of lightning and fury.

Lifter steps forward, wrecking havoc upon the Tannda's front line. When he attempts to strike their second rank though, he finds the ink too deep to penetrate with his mechanical eyes.
