back into 3.x
« on: September 06, 2017, 03:31:31 AM »
I'm trying to shake off the rust and get back into 3.x after doing PF for the last.... who knows how long.

Anyone know of a more recent text on acquired vs. inherited templates in reference to when they can be applied.

Here's all I found so far...

"WHEN TO ADD
Some templates can be added to creatures at any time. A
monster or character may become a ghost after death. A
spellcaster of at least 11th level can become a lich. A crea-
ture with 5 or more HD killed by a vampire may become a
vampire. Such templates are called acquired templates.
Other templates, such as the celestial, fiendish, half-celes-
tial, half-dragon, and half-fiend, assume that the crea-
ture or character was born with the changes indi-
cated. Templates such as these are called inherited
templates. It’s possible for a template to be of either
type. For example, lycanthropy can afflict anyone
the template description allows at any point, but
some creatures are born lycanthropes."

The 3.5 version is in the SRD: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#acquiredAndInheritedTemplates

I'm AFB, but I am 99% sure it's from somewhere in the intro of MM1 and repeated again in the other MMs.

Thx, found it

"Adding More Than One Template
In theory, there’s no limit to the number of templates you can add
to a creature. To add more than one template, just apply each tem-
plate one at a time. Always apply inherited templates before apply-
ing acquired templates. Whenever you add multiple templates, pay
attention to the creature’s type—you may add a template that
makes the creature ineligible for other templates you might want
to add. For example, a vampire cannot become a lich and vice versa."

There is a spell in an Eberron book (the one about dragons where the loredrake comes from) Strength of the True Form or something like that.  It only lasts a round, but it is persistable.  That may help.

Otherwise I don't know any way to do so.

Oh, and glad you're looking into 3.X again. :)

There's nothing for Lycanthropy, I double checked my guide.

The old version of Curse of Lycanthropy (Complete Divine) gave a Permanent duration lycanthropic template of the caster's choice.
Technically not RAW since it got "updated" in Spell Compendium, but the new version is different to the point of unrecognizability. A DM might let you use the old version.

Edit: Derp misunderstood the question. Ignore.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

The closest for that is Black Blood Hunter's Animal Aspect ability.  It lets you x/day for x minutes/day gain the Str or Dex or Con score of your hybrid form (x increases depending on the class level).

Besides the Petitioner template, any way to reduce 15 racial Monstrous Humanoid hit dice to 10 HD or less?

Must still be playability as a PC.

Can you use the level drain trick?

Depending on the monstrous humanoid, there may be a "savage species progression" for it.

I was thinking just make out with a Succubus. Enervation explicitly never causes actual level loss (the negative levels only last 15 hours tops).

I'm finally trying to get back to an actual Hulking Hurler build.

It's so tough trying to remember all the rules they changed for PFS, along with just the other 3.x rules too.
