Title: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)
Post by: Nanshork on November 14, 2017, 02:03:35 PM
Together or individually, you all are answering a call for help.  The high priest of Kelemvor, Doomguide Yovir Glandon, of the city of Phlan has requested able bodied adventurers to look into attacks on small coastal communities in the area.

Magiries, the request for aid came to you directly.  Given your history with Enar you invited her along, two holy warriors being better than one after all.  The rest of you were called in more general ways, but the feeling you got was that this isn't a trumpet call for any and all to answer.  This call is more targeted, it seems that Doomguide Glandon doesn't want to incite panic.

You've made your way to Phlan on the passenger ship Paulina, and any who have mingled with the crew have heard rumors that the attacks have been from a pirate ship.  There are even quieter rumors among the passengers that it is some sort of "ghost ship", but the crew refuses to discuss the subject out of superstition.  If there is some sort of ghost pirate ship out there, they don't want to tempt fate by discussing it.

Paulina has just tied up at the dock and disembarkation has begun.  You know that Doomguide Glandon can be found at Valhingen Graveyard and that he wants to discuss with you in person just what his concerns are.

"...The morning after they left I was freed from jail in the middle of the afternoon and we stole a ship. Then we sailed to a different harbor and stopped over night to hire a new crew. And then we went right after them and made it to the the island before they even made landfall." rambled the sailor next to him. Teferi glances back to him, having hardly paid too much attention to things, "But didn't you say the boat they were on was the fastest ship ever made?" Dumb-stricken the probably-a-pirate stammers something incomprehensible before muttering rum needs him and he wanders off in a drunken stride.

It'd been a while since his last visit to Phlan, he had forgotten how strange some of the locals could be but before he could reminisce with Freona's daughters he needed to figure out where this graveyard was. Turning to the person standing beside him he says, "I don't suppose you know where the cemetery is?"

"It's on the other side of the city," Magiries stated, glad to be back on dry land after the time at sea. It was almost a shame that no ghost pirates had attacked them on the journey--it would have been good to annihilate the wretches before they could trouble any more civilian shipping. But heavy armour and a polearm were hardly the ideal equipment for when attacked afloat; even the stoutest of vessels only had so much space on deck.

And undead couldn't drown, that was an unfair advantage.

"If we keep going, we can't miss it."

"Hmm... That could be interesting. I haven't met a high priest of Kelemevor before, let alone worked for one. I'll go have a look. Maybe even do this quest of his." Says Aval. He gathers his things, and sets off to the graveyard, owl on his shoulder.

Glancing at Mag and seeing her ease up a little, "Across the city? Well, at least we get to stretch our legs some. I've been pacing on that tiny deck for what feels like ages now."

Teferi wondered if Mag was worried about the horrific mansharks he had heard were at sea but then he figures she was probably off thinking about ghost zombie pirates or something like normal. Glancing backward, wasn't someone else supposed to be coming?

Enar shows up running after Mag, finishing buckling her armor.

Ah, wait for me Mag! Sorry I'm late, but had to finish my ship duties first.

She did her best to look cheery, but she also knew that between the rumors and this specific call, something bad was brewing on. Even then it was more reason to show a positive attitude. The people looked up to paladins in times of trouble, and if they look worried, then panic would be sure to spread.

Jarsank snorts. "Between you and me, I sometimes wish all these Death Gods weren't so strict about people passing on. Sure, Undead are usually nothing but trouble, but sometimes life ain't long enough to finish what you started. Wouldn't be surprised if half these rumors about ghost pirates were just sailors who didn't want to stop sailing when they went down with the ship." With a look over Aval's coin purse and cloths, he adds to his statement; "I'd think someone from your walk of life would understand the sentiment, given how often the lot brag about their line going back so long."

"It's no bother," the rather more dour paladin answered, leading the way towards the graveyard--though the city was considerably more ordered than her home or the like, and the long avenue towards the exterior wasn't something one could get lost on, "It saved us some expense on the way here."

Teferi falls into step between the two paladins like having a shield to either side, "It should be fine Enar, ships are not very timely anyway so I doubt the priest had an exact time in mind. At least you had something interesting to do, I had to spend most of the trip reading over a mine dispute and doing my own arithmetic."

"Ugh. Tell me about. Back home, it seemed like there was a scandal every other year with somebody getting cheated out of their inheritance because dad got resurrected or turned into a vampire or some other shenanigans. They always think nobody will notice."
He shrugs.

Interesting wouldn't be my first choice of word for ship chores. Maybe dutyful, sacred, rewarding. But it does helps keep the mind and body busy over the sea. Asmodeus find work for idle hands as you know. And saves money indeed, so we have more left to help people!

By coincidence both groups of adventurers arrive at the main entrance to the cemetery at the same time.   A middle aged man in grass-stained robes is working in a garden next to the main entrance, turning the dirt with a small hand trowel while several pots of flowers are next to him.  Without looking up he speaks with an even voice.

"I am so glad you answered my call for aid.  If all is as I fear, time may be short.  Let us talk quickly.  I am Doomguide Yovir.  There are rumors of a "ghost ship" attacking small villages and lone farms or inns on the northern coast of the Moonsea.  The attacks have slowly been moving up the coast and no one seems moved to act as the danger draws ever nearer to Phlan."

He pauses, allowing you a chance to respond.

Magiries eyebrow appeared to be developing a rather noticeable twitch at the news. "Survivors? Proper reports? Or just dead and a ship?"
Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)
Post by: Nanshork on December 10, 2017, 11:01:50 PM
Doomguide Yovir puts his trowel down and brushes the dirt off of his hands before answering Magiries' questions.

"There have been reports that a ghost ship has been haunting the coast, destroying small villages and homesteads.  Our church is not the military, people do not make 'proper reports' to us.  The only survivor in the area is one at the temple.  Yesterday, a man from a small hamlet two days to the southwest was picked up just outside of the city.  He was delivered to our church because he appears to be insane and was raving about a dracolich."
Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)
Post by: Archon on December 10, 2017, 11:25:24 PM
"A dracolich, huh? Fascinating! It would kill everybody here a dozen times over, but it seems unlikely. Maybe a dinosaur skeleton? Or maybe he's just mad. you never know. Would we be able to speak to him, or is he in too bad a condition?

Finchley, by the way"

He offers his hand to shake.
Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)
Post by: oslecamo on December 11, 2017, 12:29:26 AM
This sounds horrible! How "slow" is this ghost ship moving? Do we have any idea of the time interval between the coastal attacks? Or at least between people finding out a farm of village was destroyed? We need to have a good idea of their mobility if we want to intercept them. Do they leave their victim's bodies behind? If no, there's a chance they're being taken as slaves. If yes, what type of damage do they show? And are any goods being stolen? I don't see why undead would need food or gold.

Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)
Post by: Nanshork on December 11, 2017, 09:52:55 AM
Doomguide Yovir looks somewhat bemused as he shakes Finchley's hand.

"Yes, you may speak with him if you wish to.  As I said, he is at the temple."

After giving directions to the Kelemovite temple in the city, he continues.

"The people are being killed, not taken.  Other than that I do not have the information you seek.  You will want to speak to the city guards, The Knights of the Black Fist.  They tasked one of their numberr, Aleyd Burral, with gathering information about the attacks."
Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)
Post by: SorO_Lost on December 11, 2017, 12:48:20 PM
Shaking his head he addresses Yovir, "I apologize for my eager companion, it's been a long trip." as he glances over to Enar momentarily. "We can go talk to the witness for a bit and then check with Aleyd of the Black Fist for details."

Raising an eyebrow he asks, "Is there anything else we need to know before going?" For a priest that sent for people, he seems pretty out of the loop.
Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)
Post by: Nanshork on December 11, 2017, 06:54:33 PM
Interpreting the raised eyebrow as disdain, Doomguide Yovir responds.

"The political factions in the city are still arguing about what to do about this threat.  I do not believe that they will come together in time to prevent catastrophe.  As our temple is specifically neutral in the realm of politics I have taken it upon myself to sidestep the bureaucracy and act directly before it's too late by requesting your aid.

In addition, these rumors of ghosts and liches have concerned me.  While these sorts of powerful undead are very rare, if they are the cause of this they must be destroyed.  I am one man doing what I can to prevent what is a danger to us all."

He looks very annoyed.

Not that she had wanted a military report--just a slightly more coherent set of information than gutter-level rumours--but the gist seemed to be of undead, an actual ship of the damned... something she'd want to see burning if it was such a thing. And not just the rantings of a deranged peasant overzealous about dealing with pirates.

But probably undead. Why kill people as pirates? They'd have more if you came back in future.

I thank you for taking iniative in this grave matter, as too often people just let problems fester and grow. If you don't know any other important detail, we need to make haste to the church to speak with the single witness and then see if we can also talk with Aleyd Burral, hopefully he'll have gathered more information.

Feeling mollified, Doomguide Yovir proffers an olive branch.

"I cannot offer any payment for this, although adventures often lead to wealth and glory that you might acquire through your own deeds.  However, I can give you two potions of healing that you might use in your efforts."

He then pauses as if remembering something.

"Magiries, as a paladin of Kelemvor I have another potion for you as a gift from the church for taking the fight to the undead."

After handing Magiries three potions of healing he continues.  "I have also arranged riding horses and rooms for you at the Laughing Goblin Inn where you may stay tonight after you have finished investigating.  The horses unfortunately are not a gift, the church cannot afford such largess."

Magiries takes the potions, carefully storing them away... after all, to a common soldier, there might be one per entire block of soldiers--most likely for the one financing the whole expedition. Even the simple things could be quite expensive when needed in bulk.

"Very well. I propose that myself and Moreira should, as our more soldierly compatriots, interview Sir Aleyd, whilst the rest of you ask the survivor his tale."

Returning to the inn, Enar shares the key points of what they gathered with the other side of the team:

The undead's attacks have been made at regular intervals of about two days, moving closer and closer to this city. It they keep this rhytm, they'll attack one more area before assaulting this very place. The place of the next attack however should be reachable in one day if we ride the horses, and we'll still have another day to evacuate any locals and find a good observation position to check out exactly what we're facing.

Still that's just a plan I've made with our side of the information. Have you managed to learn anything useful from the survivor?

Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)
Post by: Archon on January 19, 2018, 09:32:18 PM
Aval is sulking in the inn when you get there;

"Well, I'm glad you had a productive afternoon. The survivor is quite mad, I'm afraid. Keeps ranting about "The Eyes of The Dracolich" and making strange sounds. I wonder what could have done this too him. Couldn't get anything of real use out of him. "

"A Dracolich? I hope that's mistaken rambling."

"Don't we all. Not much we can do if it is. But his madness seemed odd to me - there might be more behind it than simple trauma.

But your plan seems good, Enar, given what we know. If we were less pressed for time, I would suggest looking at one of the attack sites, but we have a deadline which would not be amenable to that. Is there anything else your group found out which might come in handy? Or should we turn in, and head out in them morning?"

The Iron Route, the main road along the north side of the Moonsea runs all the way from Zhentil Keep to Phlan and beyond.  Travel along it is swift and generally safe, at least as far as it can be expected to be in the violent and unpredicatable Moonsea region.  With the sun still up above gathering storm clouds you find yourself out of Phlan and well on your way West when you chance to come across a wagon pulled to the side of the road with a broken axle.  A young human boy tends a campfire while a man in merchant clothing digs in the back of the wagon.

They haven't noticed you yet.

Gilfron looks wary, being approached by a group of armed travelers will do that to a man.  He makes a decision easily enough however.

"Yes, your help would be much appreciated."

You see that his wagon is filled with axes, saws, pulleys, and other tools useful in working lumber.  You might be able to rig a temporary repair as there are many trees around.

I don't know a lot about wagons but I've made my fair share of ship repairs, and they're both made of wood. When something breaks down in the middle of the sea, we need to rig something fast or drown.

They couldn't really afford to spend much time here, but leaving innocents stranded in the middle of the road simply wasn't an option.

The three of you working together (but mostly the two paladins) managed to rig up a temporary repair to the wagon's axle that will see the wagon back to Phlan.

"Magiries Hawklight, and this is Enar Moreira, Barrin von Teferi, and Aval Finchley. I would be glad to join you for dinner," the spear-wielding paladin stated. As much as riding ahead would bring themselves a step closer to scouting in the morning, she knew better than to pass up a meal--you never knew the next time you'd be getting a decent one in a situation like this. With conditions as they were, too, how could they simply leave a merchant alone on a road at night? Any number of things--including the undead they hunted--could crawl out of the woodwork.

"So we get to stay?" Aval mutters hesitantly. After a moment, he decides to roll with it.

"Capital! I am glad for the break. I haven't done this much riding since school. Except, that time ... but this not the time nor place for that. "

He sets about helping with fire-building and other such sundries as are needed, if nothing else comes up.

Aval's offer of help is kindly rejected and as he sits near the fire he can see that Gilmont is already preparing dinner.

At Magiries' introduction the merchant obviously decides to become more formal.  "We are the Milon's.  I own a handful of wagons and leading caravans that trade all along the coast of the Moonsea.  So what brings you travelers out this way so late?  You can obviously take care of yourselves, but the road can be a dangerous place at night."

My name is Enar Moreira and we'll gladly accept your offer of hospitality.

We have an important mission urging our speed. There have been a series of attacks along the nearby coast. Do not panic, but all reports we got so far point out to the foul undead being responsible, a ghost ship. They seem to be following a set pattern and thus we hope to be able to evacuate the area that will be their next target, then check out with our own eyes their nature.

And what do you mean this road not being safe at night? I suppose that if your wagon hadn't broken, you expected to have made it to the city before nightfall? Are night bandits or some other nocturnal threat a common ocurrence around here?

I'm a bit surprised somebody wealthy enough to own several wagons and caravans would not hire an escort for their own persona.

"Recently I have seen a lot of raided villages and homes.  At the village just two days away I saw the ruins still smoldering like all the others.  I do not know anything about a 'ghost ship', we've avoided going into any of the ruins in case the raiders were still around."

As for evacuating, the only sign of civilization that we've seen was the island ferry about a day back.  Those fisher folk have been there for longer than I can remember.

The road isn't safe at night because it is the main road.  Wild animals, bandits, thugs.  You four might not encounter these things armed as you are but normal travelers have to be wary.

As for hiring guards, that would be too expensive.  Hiring enough guards to offer meaningful protection would mean selling wagons.  Selling wagons would mean less profit, less profit would mean giving all of the money that I make to the guards.  Look at what is in my wagon, I'm not hauling jewels.  I'm more concerned for my life than my goods."

I see. I'm not that experienced in matters of money and even less on land based commerce so I thank you for the explanation. A merchant vessel with a skilled crew can outmaneuver pirates and sea monsters even if they have little fighting power, but in a road you could just abandon a slow wagon and run if things get too dangerous.

And I should've guessed a main road would attract bandits and thugs just like the main sea routes attract pirates and corsairs. When this is over I need to send a letter about starting patrols on both the land and waters of this region. Even if there's an initial cost, it would make things easier for everybody, including merchants such as you, there would be more trade and thus more profit, and in the end even the higher ups would prosper more. But right now we have to do the best we can on our own. Those ruins you saw are a sad confirmation of the troubles this region faces...

Ah, that reminds me. We have a map of the region with us. Could you point to us the position of that fishing village you mentioned? It'll probably be the target of the next raid and it will save us precious time if we don't need to blindly search the area.

Enar searches around for the map the party acquired and places it open in front of the merchant before sitting down to start on her meal, noticing she's kinda starving.

This duck is really good! Traveling on land may be more tiring, but at least we also get to eat better.

Pointing out the rough area where the ferry can be found Gilfron says, "Follow the road to here.  There you will see the island ferry.

The fisher folk have always been a strange and isolated lot who don't much mix with others, but I spoke with the boatman and loosened his tongue with some supplies to repair his ferry.  The boatman said he was more worried about the storm coming in the next day or so than we was about any rumors of a dracolich haunting the area.

After all, in Stormy By storms coming in off the sea are all too common.  Undead dragons are not."

Hmmm, from who exactly did you hear any rumors about a dracolich? We just found one survivor from the attacks, and you appear to only have seen ruins besides Stormy By, which wasn't attacked yet. Have the local fishermen seen something suspicious when going to sea?

"I heard it from the boatman of course.  I inquired further as to why he mentioned it, but he just said that there has been a plague lately of those with fragile minds spouting such tales.  In fact his island village sheltered one such soul who had wandered to the ferry stop two days ago.

The man had seen something that made him lose his mind and spout on about the 'eyes of the dracolich' watching him wherever he goes.  The boatman felt that the vagrant was clearly weak and confused."

Indeed, we should cover as much ground as possible before night falls.

Finishing her meal, Enar puts down her empty bowl and stands up.

I'm very grateful for your hospitality, but now we must hurry to this fisherman's village you spoke of. May the goddess bless you with a safe trip.

You continue traveling for an hour or so, and as night falls a stiff wind that smells of rain whips up.  A high pitched yipping accompanied by a rustling in a roadside bush is the only warning you get before a wolf pup runs into the road ahead of you.  It is followed a heartbeat later by a second pup that tackles the first in the road.

The heartwarming roughhousing is broken by the sound of a deep and much louder growling from behind you.

Having taken the rear, Magiries nudges the horse around, wondering what animal is bold enough to pick a fight with all four of them mounted--and how easily it can be driven off.

Magiries sees a huge wolf, most likely a dire wolf, 15 feet away with hackles raised.  She realizes that this is most likely the mother of the wolf pups in the road.

I suppose that the rest of us will also turn around and see the wolf?

When he does, Aval tries to make himself non-threatening, and get out from between the wolf and her Cubs. (Presumably hers, at least). Ideally, we won't fight some giant wolf just for getting in her way. And if we, at least I don't want to be a target.

"Nice doggy...?" Magiries says, trying to manoeuvre the horse out of the way, hopefully with the others following suit and the horse not bolting. Fighting a giant wolf would be more trouble than it was worth.

Teferi debates on how tasty the wolf might be as he stares the mother down while he nudges his horse with his right knee. If mommy wolf thinks this will be a free meal then Teferi is going to be eating some tasty wolf veal.

You don't know who exactly is to blame, but the mother wolf has obviously decided that all of you did not get out of the way non-threateningly enough.

The growl intensifies and the horses become skittish.  Magiries and Barrin are able to keep their horses calm but Enar and Aval's horses rear up in panic.  Aval is able to stay in the saddle but Enar is thrown from her horse.

The pups are ten feet in front of Enar as she lays on the ground, their mother fifteen feet behind Magiries.  She looks ready to lunge.

Teferi was expecting the wolf to attack but didn't quite think Enar would be laying on the ground checking constellations at this hour. Spotting the wolf's attempt to lunge Teferi says "Here puppy puppy puppy." as he raises his arm and adds, "(https://imgur.com/WrFPYuU.png) (https://imgur.com/4dbukA9.png) (https://imgur.com/leoRuOi.png)" and a large clear liquid-like drop-shaped blast flies from his outstretched hand to strike the mother wolf. Then he calmly guides his horse on the other side of his allies hoping to bait it into charging past them.

"Why are we attacking the wolf?" was the paladin's main thought. They were hardly a hunting party... wolves were just nastier dogs, weren't they? If they'd just left it alone then it would probably have been fine.

Oh well, she had no choice now but to push the horse forwards and attack.

The pups are terrified and run off into the bushes.

Ironically enough, their mother attacks Enar for despite the fact that she is the only one who has not wounded the wolf she is the only one actually on the ground.  Luckily for Enar the wolf is bleeding to death and doesn't seem to have the strength to land a bite.

The sun starts to touch the horizon at almost the same instant as Barrin's blast of arcane energy fells the wolf mother.  Her pups whine from the bushes and then run away from the party as fast as they can, knowing that they will to be killed if they do not.

The sky starts to darken, and from the directions you received from Gilfron you do not believe you will reach the ferry landing before full night.

Thinking about how the pups should be old enough to maybe survive on their own if they could run that fast (and knowing when to run from an hopeless situation), Enar slows down her horse and dismounts, preparing to start camp.

The darkness will bring darker things out of their hiding places. We should stop for today, and ride again at first light. I'll take first watch if nobody else minds.

After his last blast hits the wolf he climbs off his mount and about five minutes later he is ready to hit the trail again with dinner strapped to his horses back. As Enar slows down wanting to make camp, "If we're stopping we'll need a fire to keep the rest of the animals away."

Presumably if they stop Teferi borrows one of his paladin friend's supplies to roast some wolf meat (having volunteered to carry other supplies 'just in case') before hanging the rest bear-bag style to keep all but intelligent creatures from getting to it. And hopefully those enough smart enough to also realizes an armed camp dining on deadly beasts isn't easy pickings.

The night passes uneventfully and the first morning since you left Phlan dawns very windy and drizzling.  A couple of hours after setting out you arrive at the ferry landing.  The sea churns with Umberlee's wrath and an elderly man with a wild beard, salt encrusted coat, and floppy hat struggles to bring a large flat bottomed raft to shore.  He pulls arm-over-arm along a rope, which is strung between the shore and a small island an arrowshot into the bay
Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)

Enar approaches and dismounts her mount next to the struggling granpa:

If Enar sees no sign of denial she'll get to helping pull the raft to the shore.

The old man ignores Enar and pulls the ferry up to the landing before she can figure out a way to properly help him.

"What do you want," he grumbles at the group.  "There's nothing to see on the island and no reason to visit the village.  Go somewhere else for your entertainment."

Enar suddenly realizes that there will be no easy way to evacuate the island even if they managed to persuade them quickly, but one problem at a time. Putting her serious diplomatic face on, she calmly explains herself:

I wish there was no reason to bother you, but there have been a series of attacks along the coast over the recent days from an unknown force. Several coastal villages have already been razed to the ground with only one confirmed survivor found. And this place, Stormy By, should be the next to fall under attack by the pattern we've observed.  From what we've gathered so far the undead are behind this wave of death and destruction, and we have come here to warn and assist you in protecting your lives as good as we can. Letting us use the ferry to reach the island so that we may speak with the leader of Stormy By would be a good start.

He looks at you with one squinting eye, the other unnaturally bulging.  He clenches a battered pipe between his teeth, making it hard to understand his angry mumbled speech.

"You wannna come to the island, one gold a head.  Animals are a silver."  He spits over the side of the ferry.  "If you insist on coming to the island ya'll be stayin until the storm passes.  I won't risk another trip until the seas calm down."

He pauses, then shakes his head disgustedly.  "You outsides and ya single leaders.  Us elders make decisions for the town.  You wanna come, you gonna pay."

Enar was pretty sure she could easily knock out this old man, commandeer the ferry and steer it herself, but that's not how she did things. Instead she takes out her purse, counts four gold pieces and four silver coins and hands them to the ferryman over the open palm of her gauntlet:

We have no time to haggle, so here is your agreed payment. Now do your job.

She then takes her horse into the ferry without waiting a reply, making it pretty clear the party's gonna cross one way or the other.

Those eyes of the dracolich, they are coming to this island tonight, and we are here to prevent you all end up like this poor sailor. Or worst.

You mentioned you are part of the ruling elder council. What would we need to do in order to gather all of the village's elders together so we can work together to prepare this village for the incoming danger? Since evacuation does not seem to be a possibilty with this weather, when night arrives every able bodied adult from Stormy By should be prepared to defend this island and everybody that cannot fight should be barricated inside their homes.

As the ferry docks at the landing, Warsh points up a hill.  "That way."

Warsh then starts to tie the ferry raft down securely, keeping one eye on the sea.  Enar with her background as a sailor can see that all of his talk of a storm wasn't a put on, the waves are rising.

Trees block the view of the village from the landing, so your first sight of it comes as you climb the wooded hill.  It is underwhelming, little more than a collection of hovels, a barn, and a large centrally located fire pit.  Dirty faces and wide eyes stare at you as you exit the rain soaked tree line, before turning away.  A grinning girl with wild dirty hair and a pock-marked face runs up to you with obvious excitement.

"Who might ye be, Outsides?"

"Course!" she says excitedly as she takes the candy and starts to eat it.  "Me name is Elisande."

First she points at the landing where you just came from.  It is slightly sheltered and contains a raft and several oar-powered and small single-masted fishing boats that are currently being drup up shore and tied down by Warsh and four other men.  "Das the landing.  It's where the Folk repaed da sea's ripe bounty.  Course is also weal for swimmin' when day dayfire rises high."

Elisande then points at the village.  It is made up of fourteen hovels with doors all facing the fire pit and none with windows that face the sea.  Four of the homes have collapsed roofs and are missing their doors and shutters.  "Dases be homes to the Folk.  Outsides mussin' haven homes!  Ye not be sleepin' in the rais do ye?  Iffen so, ye not want to be botherin' the Folk."

Her excitement fades and she looks very sad as she points at a house that has collapsed in upon itself, leaving only a small area protected from rain where one wall leans against another.  "Das me house before me mudder and vater were taken by the chill fever.  Now wees kept the lunaman there."

Her sadness fades as she gets distracted by her new job of showing you around and points at the fire pit in the middle of the village. "Da pit es the local for speeching with the crones.  Day always clean the drink.  All need the drink."

Next Elisande points at a barn at the edge of the village.  "Da is the barn.  House for yan goats!"

"And das ye smokenhouse.  Not weal aire, but good eat!" she says as she points at a smokehouse attached to one of the hovels.

You can also see a forest a ways off on the other side of the village.  When she sees one of you looking at it Elisande says, "No, mustin walk the dark wood.  The creatures gobble you!"

Bad news indeed, but at least it means we're not wasting our time chasing rumors.

I just confirmed that the villagers here are awfully stubborn and rallying them to properly defend the village before the undead show up may just be impossible.

Anyway, the only places left to check are the common houses, the forest, and the goats. I suggest we split in two groups to check the common houses and goats now, then go to the forest all together since there may be something dangerous already there. Volunteering myself for the common houses team next.

The goats themselves probably not, but there may be some sort of clue there. Evil lurks everywhere, and we should investigate as much as possible of the island before night falls.

Fair enough, I'll trust the common houses to you then.

Since it doesn't seem like anybody else from the party has interest in checking up the goats just in case, Enar will head there herself.

Magiries and Barrin walk to the other end of the ravine and see an easier way up than the way that they came down.  As they climb out they hear the rustling of something large moving through the woods back at the end of the ravine they went into, and after hearing stories of the beast in the woods they decide there's no reason to fight and instead head back towards town to rejoin their companions.

The sun is beginning to go down and it is starting to rain.

Enar doesn't mind being a bit wet, it's kinda inevitable when working on a ship at sea, and at least now it's sweet water splashing on her instead of salty stuff.

Ah, good to see you! Was about to go to the woods myself to look for you since you were gone for so long. Found anything useful? On my side the goats may just be the nicest locals from this island, also their place is filled with materials we could use to build some barricades, plus some ship wreckage.

I found a sacrificial alter in a cave, couple extra bucks we probably can't spend here, a lovely dagger painted in the blood of the townsfolk, and these. Teferi says holding up a the rolled up scrolls he grabbed earlier.

(Can I ID the scrolls? I have the ritual magic feat, so at least some of them should be in my effective spell list, assuming I'm correct in assuming you mean spell scrolls)

"Hey give them here"
Aval eagerly examines the scrolls and their contents.

"Hmm, given that, I think I'm reinstating my theory that there's an cult somewhere around here. I had worked myself out of that particular panic while I was trying to find you, so thank you for that." While saying that, he gesticulates with the teeth-amulet he found.

Aval muses for a second or two, then proceeds to speculate wildly.

"Dracolich cultists? Seems possible. Maybe they're summoning something?"

Enar insntantly draws her sword instantly at hearing the mention of 'devilry', then slowly sheats it again when hearing the rest of the explanation.

A pact with fey? When will people learn? If you're gonna do such a thing, at least do it with a proper deity.

Don't suppose that paper has the deal's details? We need to know the place we're supposed to defend.

Either way I say we should confront the crones with this document, even if they don't offer a proper explanation they may become more cooperative. Time is running short.

"If we stick together for talking to the crones, we should have a higher chance of pulling through by being able to support each other. Although before that, there's something else we can try first..."

The sailor paladin looks at Elisande nearby, slowly approaches the girl, kneels down so they're at same eye height, then speaks to her with the softest voice and smile she can muster:

"Hi there sweetie, would you mind telling big sis Enar if you know anything about fairies, a queene or any pact in this island? It's for a very important matter, and I'll give you a nice treat if you do so."

Title: Re: Coastal Troubles (IC Thread)

Elisande shakes her head.

"Ussn don't know about any fairies or queenies.  I heard of scaly beasties in da sea, they help the Folk when we make'm happy and reap our bounty when they're not."

She prattles on a bit more and is clearly reciting folk tales and superstitions that she grew up with, you have no way of knowing if there is truth to any of it.

"Hmmm, maybe the people here did this pact with some sea spirits? Would be nice if we could get them to help us. So talking this out with the crones still seems like our best bet before night falls. Who else wants to join me?"

The crones screech in unison and one of them cries out, "The pact has been broken by the Outsides!  Kill them!"

Elisande flees in terror as the crones join hands and quickly chant what is clearly some sort of spell.  The necklace that Aval found made of human teeth and hair grows hot in his pocket for a second, then whatever power was left in it dies.  Cries of rage come from around you and you all hear the sounds of people running your way.  Whatever protection you thought to give these people from the ship of the dead is now moot, before the sun goes down either you or they will be dead yourselves.

Shoutarou quickly considered his options. Staying in here would probably end with him smoked alive. Clearly there was fighting outside, possibly an invasion by dastardly monsters!

"I have spent long enough unjustly imprisoned! TOAH!"

He leaps mightily (in his head) out of the smoke, flips in the air (again, in his head) and ends in a dramatic pose (in reality, he just sorta rolled out of there and ended up in a dramatic pose).

The man that appears before the group has an insectoid-looking full-face mask and a red scarf, but otherwise is clad fully in black leather.

Though the undead afterwards might be a major problem.

The adventurers who had been hired to protect these people from the ghost ship are surprised to see the huge Ulberto barge out of the smokehouse at the Crone's cries, sword in hand.  A masked man does some sort of jumping roll out of the smokehouse almost immediately after and poses for what appears to be no reason at all, though he is obviously not one of the villagers.

A handful of villagers pour of of nearby huts, all wielding broken pieces of timber.  Warsh can be seen in the distance, unarmed and surprised as he was walking back into the village from the docks.  The crones have finished their chanting.

It takes a moment before Kamen Rider Kaitou can properly assess the situation. Once he does, though, it becomes fairly obvious what he must do.

After all, the villagers imprisoned him here, unfairly so. Therefore, the villagers must be the bad guys!

He strides towards the nearest villager and tries to stick him/her up like a piece of chicken!

Magiries deftly slays one of the crones, but Kaitou's efforts are less fulfilling as he misses the villager completely.

In the distance, Warsh casts a spell of his own. Three magical darts shoot out from his hands, one each hitting Barrin, Magiries, and Aval.

One of the commoners attacks Kaitou more successfully than he was attacked. Another runs behind a hut and Magiries hears a yelp of surprise that she recognizes as the madman.

Ulberto charges forward in a rage and swings twice at Barrin (who is between him and Aval), missing both times.

A second commoner goes behind a hut to try and slay the madman, but doesn't sound any more successful.

Seeing her fellow paladin smite down one of the hags, Enar agrees it's the best tactic. Those now clearly evil hags couldn't be allowed to try any more of their foul magics plus there was hope the villagers would snap back to their senses once there were no more vile leaders to corrupt their minds anymore. Also it helped the hags certainly would have an harder time dodging her attacks being senile old women and stuff.

(https://i.imgsafe.org/4a/4a1bfcc968.png):"Seaaaa Swooooord Aaaactioooon!"

Enar's sword glows brightly with the power of justice as she closes in with the nearest hag and slashes at her with elegance and beauty!

Enar's attack hits the crone hard, but not hard enough to slay her foe.  Barrin strikes at the crone to slay her but misses.

In retaliation, one of the crones reaches out and touches Barrin which kills him instantly.  The other tries to do the same to Magiries but she dodges out of the way.

Aval continues the cycle of vengeance by directing his familiar to distract Ulberto while he shoots him.

If that doesn't drop him, he'll also move back to make sure he's more than 30ft away from Ulberto.

Enar reels back from the attacks. Clearly she had understimated her enemy for looking like simple commoners, for it seemed their sinister pacts had granted them some kind of unholy luck so that the paladin's guard was so easily overcome. At least there seemed to be more in the side of love and justice still standing than their opponents now.

The sailor's blade splits up in a thousand striking from all directions at the commoner that challenged her. Or maybe it's just the way Enar's mind clouded by her pain sees it.

Enar advances next to Warsh as well, making fancy moves with her sword more to distract him and hoping to give Magiries an opening. Not exactly the most honorable of tactics but they had been the ones trying to overwhelm the paladins and their companions with sheer numbers.

With your combined might the two holy warriors strike down their last enemy.  You know that there are still some villagers hiding in their huts but they have made it clear that they aren't any threat to you.

Elisande comes out of hiding and looks really worried about Aval's condition.  She runs into the smokehouse and runs back out with a bag that she holds out to whichever Paladin looks the friendliest.  "For healing," she says.

Sailor Justice will procceed to apply the healing to her fallen allies still breathing, then hand out one to Magiries and then if there's any left, one for herself.

Coincidentally enough there are four healing potions within the bag.  Barrin is no longer breathing but Aval and the man who barged out of the Smokehouse and assisted you both are.

The sun is going down, the storm is getting worse, and you are all exhausted.  It is time to rest.

Kamen Rider Kaitou was floating in a sea of darkness.

Nothing was around him. Nothing and no one. He tried calling out but he had no voice.

And then... a light. He followed the light until it became a little less blinding. Through it he could see... a quarry. A glorious quarry where glorious battle awaited. (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KirksRock)

He could almost see the monsters. The explosions. The giant robots.

And then, with a gasp, he was back amongst the living.

"Whazzat? Tada-san, is that you?"

(https://i.imgsafe.org/4a/4a1bfcc968.png):"Tada-san? Now, just me, Sailor Justice, or Enar for my friends. The sea surely smiled upon you for allowing you to survive such grievous wounds, certainly for your bravery in aiding us against the evil villagers out of nowhere. Rest for now, but know that something more terrible approaches and we'll need to face it tonight, a ship of the very undead. It is the reason our group came here. Our plan was to organize an evacuation or general defense however seems like we'll have to make a stand in our own, the sea's too stormy to run now. But how did you come to this place? You certainly don't seem like one of the locals."

While listening for any answer from their new companion, nar would take some time to strip the bodies of the dead of anything they didn't need anymore then granting them funerals better than they deserved by offering them to the sea, hoping the local fish would make quick work of them meaning less bodies for any incoming necromancers to defile.

Then she would present the bow, sword and quarterstaff earned from their battle:

(https://i.imgsafe.org/4a/4a1bfcc968.png):" Anybody wants to hold to one of these? My blade's better up close and although I'm trained in archery, switching from bow and arrow to shield and sword during a fight isn't very easy."

Either way, Enar would then rest and pray to the sea for new strength in their quest. In particular mysticism, the vile hags and that greedy man had all inflicted great damage to them with their spells, if they had learned how to do so in this backwater island, it was about time the paladin started to tap in the holy magic she knew was inside her since she was a little kid. Also figure out a way to use her shield to protect her allies if she couldn't use it to protect herself.

"I am Kamen Rider Kaitou. But my friends call me Shoutarou when I'm not wearing the mask." The mysterious masked stranger responded. "I travel far and wide in search of injustices to correct. When I first arrived at this village, they threw me into that place over there for little to no reason. That was how I knew to strike them once you arrived - surely no innocent villagers would imprison a weary traveler for no reason!

I would've liked a ranged option, but alas, I do not know how to properly pull a bow."

Aval will flinch a bit as he comes around, and then sulk because he appears to have gotten lost in another genre.

He might go discreetly see who in the village is still alive? (Limping a bit because he's still not fully recovered)

"... Good to meet you."

"I don't need additional weapons; my current bow is quite good enough for me."

"Magiries Hawklight," the other paladin says, introducing herself and, with some consideration, taking the bow. Her preference would always be for for the solid versatility and strength of a polearm over archery, but the previous fight had shown the risks of magic users simply spreading themselves thin.

While the other remaining villagers hided in fear, that child had not only recognized the party's righteouness but even brought them valuable medicine. She was clearly too brave and good for this backwater cursed place. As a paladin, Enar couldn't just leave her behind when this all was over.

Looking the child in the eyes and smiling, Enar speaks to her:

(https://i.imgsafe.org/4a/4a1bfcc968.png):"Elisande darling, if you don't have any parents, how about coming to live with auntie Enar and Magiries when the dawn comes? There's a whole big world out there, by road and by ship. You'll be able to see and learn a lot of new things. Do they even have a school in this place? Did anyone taught you how to read and write and math? We can teach you or sign you up in an academy with pretty uniforms and everything. You'll be able to go very far with your courage and brains."

You all take shelter from the coming storm in the goat barn, convincing Elisande to stay with you.  Your sleep is restful.

However, you are all awakened before dawn.  Somewhere in the night sky above the thunderclouds, Selune has raised an old moon: a slim, fading crescent.  In the wind and rain, its light is lost to you.  However, through the sheets of water, a pale glow and swirl of fog unaffected by the storm approach the landing.  Screams of the damned ride the wind.

Not if we're badly outnumbered. Can we run? Well, we have a sailor and there has to be *some* boat around this place we can nick. So is the storm or the dead more likely to kill us all. Enar calmly starts making a last check-up of her gear.

(https://i.imgsafe.org/4a/4a1bfcc968.png):"Run away? In one of the local boats? With this weather?  May as well cut our own throats, trust me, we have  better odds making a stand here no matter what's inside that boat."

The paladin then shouts to anybody who may be hearing:

(https://i.imgsafe.org/4a/4a1bfcc968.png):"Hear me good people of this island! The undead are coming! We'll stand against them! I ask that you stand with us! Grab your weapons and raise! Raise and fight! Fight for your lives!"
