Title: Martial Discipline Compendium
Post by: sirpercival on July 22, 2012, 09:59:17 AM
This here is a compilation of links and descriptions of every homebrew martial discipline that's out there.  Phaedrusxy began such a list here (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=4779.msg67484#msg67484), but I want links, dammit!  Also, it's buried in the Nord's Blade thread; I thought this might come in useful for other people who are homebrewing martial adepts.

If you find a homebrew discipline that I've missed, please leave a link!  If you find that one of the unmarked disciplines is incomplete, or that an incomplete discipline is finished, please let me know.

Many thanks to Garryl and especially Morph Bark for large amounts of links.

The version on gitp is here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=255468).

Additions to the published disciplines:
Extra maneuvers (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1908.msg19766#msg19766) by Risada
Rushes (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1191.0) (move-action maneuvers) by Garryl
Frozen Zephyr/Caustic Tempest/Shocking Sky (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67570) (alternate energy types for Desert Wind) by Krimm Blackleaf (gitp)
Some collected maneuvers (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9254698&postcount=9) (mostly Universal and a Devoted Spirit) by Obsidianjaerc (gitp)
Martial Schools (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=240489) by DaTedinator (gitp)
Martial Domains (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=252182) by Sgt. Cookie (gitp)
Desert Warblade Maneuver Substitutions (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8887672&postcount=11)

Miscellaneous:
Arcane Sun and Blackened Moon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8887683#post8887683), arcane disciplines for the Arcane Swordsage (not traditional disciplines).

I've got a pair I have to finish...

One of them is a Commoner discipline.

Yes, you read that right.

God damn there are a lot of homebrew disciplines out there... that list above (including the unsorted stuff) might be maybe 60% of everything I've got so far.  There are a ton and a half of disciplines on gitp.

I'm including incomplete ones too, with the expectation that they will eventually be finished... lol.

Hey Prime, I can't really sort out what's what with your BlazBlue contributions.  Can you help?

No need to include those, they're just some scattered maneuvers/feats that might be fleshed out later.

I'd suggest that incompletes be clearly flagged. People looking for homebrew to use might not appreciate having the thing just break or mutate mid play.

So how complete do you want this to be? I got a Wordfile with a listing of homebrew disciplines numbering exactly 168, links and all.

I can flag them, that's not a problem.  Though, anyone who doesn't follow the link on anything they're going to use deserves the frustration.

I would love for it to be as complete as possible.  Can you send that to me?  I've got 72 in the table, more to go, and I haven't even gotten to the Age of Warriors yet.

Yes, but flagging them tells people which links are not worth following when they are looking for something to actually use in-play.

Agreed. If you're looking for the one in ten disciplines that fit your concept, having to look through twice as many because half the time what you clicked on isn't ready for play yet makes it all the more tedious.

I was collecting it for my Homebrew Tier Compendium and still need to do a little bit of formatting for it. Once I got it up (shouldn't take more than a day), I'll give you the link. All Age of Warriors stuff is in there, as well as anything I could find on GitP, this board, the old Brilliant Gameologist boards, the WotC forums, the ENWorld forums, the Competitor boards, Fax's wiki, DnD-wiki/Dungeon wikia, Dandwiki, the Gaming Den (nothing) and Dicefreaks. I didn't include about a dozen incomplete ones though, which are mainly found on GitP.

Actually, if you could bounce me the link as well, I'd greatly appreciate it. I've been meaning to do a little more aggressive collecting of homebrew for my own compendium.

OK, so it turns out I already had most of what's in the Age of Warriors.  So it's not as bad as I thought.

Now I just need disciplines which start with X, Y, and Z.  Get on it, homebrewers!

OK, I've gotten down all the disciplines that I had, which totals 104 (including a few incomplete disciplines).  I'm taking the WIP off, and anyone else who finds a discipline, drop it here please.

Unfortunately, I didn't find the ones you need, but I did find 64 more than you did!

Here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13604377#post13604377) is a link.

EDIT: Actually, more than 64, since I didn't have Maula Kae/Monkey Paw yet and largely did not include unfinished ones (barring those that were finished up to level 6, and a major exception to the rule being Adamant Cuisine).

Title: Re: Martial Discipline Compendium
Post by: Morph Bark on July 23, 2012, 06:56:53 PM
For as far as I can see, yes I do. With the addition of Maula Kae and Sublime Tapestry, I'm now at 170. In the future, these will be further categorized by how they can affect the Tier of a martial adept class and how well done they are and how good their flavour and mechanical use in a game (granted, that last part may end up pretty subjective).

And this is only for a sub-section of the Homebrew Tier Compendium, yeesh!

I'll get right to writing Xenophobe's Grace, Youthful Wisdom and Zealous Brand  :D.

One Favored Enemy discipline, one based around innovation, and one based around whipping your allies and yourself into a foaming rage.

(Probably not gonna brew these.)

Also, I note a lack of Elemental Union (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98572)

The disciplines, Abjurant Champion, Inner Light, Phantasmal Opus, Phoenix Flame, and Unquiet Twilight, that you have attributed to me (bkdubs123) aren't really in any sort of complete form. However, I have posted truly complete versions of all save Unquiet Twilight, as Ziegander in my Warrior's Way collection of material found HERE (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=192596). Specifically, in the seventh post of the thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10640971&postcount=7).

Also, to give credit where it's due, your write-up reads like I was the original creator of the Inner Light and Unquiet Twilight concepts and disciplines, but I actually stole most of the work from other homebrewers: EvilVegan's Inner Light and Aotrscommander's Unquiet Twilight are the originals, neither were fully my own.

EDIT: One more thing. I also have the incomplete (but very nearly complete) Art of War (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=240589) discipline over at GitP.

I'll note that Glacial Chill, Leaping Gale, Masked Moon, Silver Pegasus, True Arrow and Viper Fang might similarly have the wrong link, as for those I linked to the Age of Warriors, where they were posted in a bunch of posts after one another. I linked to the first one posted (but in such a way the rest of the thread is visible too), because it had the link to the original thread. I didn't use the link to the original thread, as the organization of the disciplines in that thread is kind of messy.

Yes, they were broken -- but don't worry, it wasn't your fault.  I just took the link from Falling Wave and changed the postcount part of the url out of laziness.  It obviously worked quite poorly.

But anyway, they're fixed now.

This (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19525674/Martial_Compendium) link has a couple Disciplines you don't have.

Also, I'm thinking about porting over Nifft's Disclipines (http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=187901) (which you already have), to make them much easier to use (right now, the blurbs and descriptions are very far apart).  What's the correct process for that?

Why thank you vry much.

EDIT: Lol.  There are 3 that I don't have; the first two don't actually exist, and the third has a broken link.

I would say just do it and give credit (call the post "Nifft's Disciplines" or something), and put a blurb at the top saying "These are posted verbatim; I'm happy to turn this over to Nifft if/when he ever appears on the boards".

EvilVegan's Crystalline Unicorn and Inner Light both appear to have maneuver blurb lists, but no actual record of the described maneuvers. Am I missing them somewhere, or is that all there is to it? And, if it is, should those disciplines be in purple text?

Hmm... that's a problem.  It seems the descriptions may have been lost to the boards...

Good catch.  I'll mark them purple.

Awww, man. That is completely not the answer I was actually hoping for. I really liked Crystalline Unicorn, because it wasn't half as repetitive as Phoenix Unicorn, and was an actual healing discipline.

Edit: Sirpercival, you seem to make martial disciplines. This might just be the 5:30 in the Morning/Haven't Slept Yet talking, but if anyone was going to flesh those out, I would totally nominate you.

...also, I really need help with the Fox and Tree discipline. It's kicking my mental butt.

A friend just revived some parts of my brain with the recipe for a basic raspberry custard. I'm going to use it to surprise my wife with raspberry custard shortcakes tomorrow, but now it occurs to me that's completely unrelated. What is related is that you are right, and there's no reason to extend your to-do list unnecessarily. Goodness knows it leads only to a ruination of time not unlike getting lost in TVtropes.

Currently? Mild sleep deprivation and a more than mild silly. :)
Oh wait, that is definitely not what you meant. Well, it would take more than ten minutes to really say, but... no wait, I'll just copy over what I have on the gitp forums about it and put it in a spoiler. And then stop thinking out loud via typing whatever is on my mind.

(click to show/hide)

Edit: Oh wait. There's technically more I have. Here, another spoiler, with the other things I have, which are also just notes.
(click to show/hide)

I think that after all is said and done, Fox and Tree would require a character that knows every maneuver to know ~82 different languages to utilize it to its maximum effect.

Questions about Fox & Tree.

~How do Tongues, Comprehend Languages, Polyglot, and similar abilities affect this?
~What class do you intend this for?  There are some feats which give out extra languages, but few classes based around it.
~Does the discipline function when you're silenced?
~What if you know Dark Speech or Words of Creation?

Questions about Fox & Tree.

~How do Tongues, Comprehend Languages, Polyglot, and similar abilities affect this?
~What class do you intend this for?  There are some feats which give out extra languages, but few classes based around it.
~Does the discipline function when you're silenced?
~What if you know Dark Speech or Words of Creation?
~"Only a character's automatic starting languages, bonus languages for high intelligence score, languages acquired through the Speak Language skill, and languages acquired selectively through class features, extraordinary abilities or feats count for purposes of initiating Fox and Tree maneuvers. Understanding and use of a language granted by spells, spell-like abilities, supernatural abilities and the epic Polyglot feat are never counted when determining the effects of a Fox and Tree maneuver." -- top of the second spoiler

~ToB classes? Swordsage and Crusader, but recommended less for the second. Non-ToB, any class which learns languages for 1 skill point each. Naturally, it does reduce the cost of languages to 1 skill point each for the crusaders and swordsages who do take it.

~Yes, although most of the augmentations do not. The augmentations of any language that cannot be spoken out loud in the first place are not affected (and thus have slightly modified rules, noted in the individual maneuvers, anyway), just as are those of any languages that are conveyed sub-sonically.

~Dark Speech, Truespeak and Words of Creation are just more languages to Fox and Tree. They have unusual learning requirements, and though I don't think I have it recorded, the discipline's "basic" feat allows a character to learn, hear and speak both Dark Speech and Words of Creation without the alignment restrictions  (although if a character is the wrong alignment, they still cannot use its special functions) and learn Truespeak as a class skill. Due the to special natures of learning these languages, their augmentation effects are more powerful than the others, per the level of the maneuvers they belong to.

Edit: Also, I am very pleased to see that all of your questions were issues I had already thought of and had answers for! :)

You know, if I can get off my ass and finish them, I have a Vile discipline and a COMMONER discipline that I need to finish, hough the second one is probably a wash.

Hey, if you're keen on actually making disciplines, it may be worth your while to know that all of Appraise, Climb, Decipher Script, Handle Animal, Iaijutsu Focus, Lucid Dreaming, Open Lock, Psicraft, Speak Language, Use Magic Device and Use Psionic Device have not been used to make any complete disciplines, yet.

Yeah, and I'm still working on the ones for both iaijutsu focus and speak language, but that still doesn't mean they're complete. :P

It would probably help progress if D&D weren't a tertiary activity for me, though. Seriously, there's a chain of activities. It's work on my primary game, my secondary game, the tcg of the primary game, the diet version of the same; write on a roleplay forum, do housework, organize RPs on a roleplay forum and then; work on D&D stuff. I mean, there is other stuff after that, but my point is that it takes me a while to get this far, so mostly things just wait around for me to be interested again. And by interested, I mean tired of doing everything else that's more important.

Oh, uh... hmm. See, I've never taken up the attempt because I never thought I'd have the ability to do such a discipline justice. I had always imagined it might be stance heavy, but... hold on. This is supposed to be a compendium. I'm going to go start another thread real quick. There's enough of this stuff floating about to deserve its own thread, anyway.

I think Appraise may have been covered by one, but if it's not on the list, I'd have to find it again (which I prolly won't try, since roughly half the listed disciplines came from me).

I've had some interesting ideas for an Open Lock-based one, as well as some Knowledge-based ones, but they'd all be pretty supernatural, which makes me feel like they would be ill-fitted for martial disciplines...

As for Iaijutsu Focus, I got a feat or something somewhere that lets you switch any skill check for a martial maneuver to Iaijutsu Focus instead, but only while your weapon is still sheathed (and it has Quick Draw as a prereq, of course), as well as allowing some additional effects.

Hm, I had seen somewhere that admins had the ability. Ah, well... maybe we can figure out something else. Or I can just post a link to the spreadsheet... but that seems bleh.

If you're having problems reading the bbcode SirP I can add things into your table.
Garryl should have provided some links >.>

What am I supposed to be linking, exactly?

Hello to anyone in TV land who might still be maintaining this. Apparently, some time in 2014 (around August, maybe?) I finished up Frozen Night, Restless Bones, and Undying Call. Who knew? Apparently not me.

I grabbed the metal ones already and threw it into notepad.

Dunno how far back I should go to grab things through.

If SirP asked you guys to post with a link/name of the Discipline and mention the Skill and what you'd want for a single sentence description within the post, I could have done it all with one tab open too :p

Ah. I didn't link Frozen Night, Restless Bones, and Undying Call because they're already in the table. They're just marked as being work-in-progress, which is no longer the case.
