D&D 5e / Nimblewright in W:DH
« on: Yesterday at 04:37:04 PM »
W:DH for Waterdeep: Dragon Heist.

In general I like the book on skimming.

The Nimblewright on p.212 is quite tasty.
The fluff + adventure back in the 40s and 50s,
provide some details.  Lantan Wizard dude
crafted it, and left it (?) with a cleric org.
It's able to craft another one of itself.

I'll guesstimate it's a Rare magic item.
This back implies some interesting things about crafting itself.

I want one.
I want one more than I want some Fighters or Barbs, or most Rangers.

It's worth exactly one half of 2 Caelic Commandments.

(click to show/hide)

Except for when if very obviously doesn't.  Like 4e.

5e is more opaque but you can see it with the full, half and third casters
and hints from rogue's sneak of fighters 3rd attack.

edit --- there's a Turning improver Resistance feat that can be taken more than once.
It's somewhere in a Fun Finds ; I liked it but have forgotten where/when.

Army of Undead ?

PhaeXY notices Rebuking Outsiders

Master of Shrouds (idk)

I don't search giantitp well, idk if this goes as far as it claims.

Turning info from reposted Cleric handbook PI + carnivore

Necromantic Oddities has a short section below the 1st post

Found quite a few references to the Comprehensive Guide To Turning,
but no functioning links.  Maybe wayback has the whole thing.  Maybe.

Unfortunately leadership assassination attempts are not rare, et tu bruto?

Nor military interventions into government.
However, If this particular candidate runs legally and
governs legally AND leaves legally (the tricky part) ...
he could maybe sorta possibly hopefully? be remembered
say like the USA's Ulysses S Grant or Dwight Eisenhower.

1 copy+paste boo boo edit necessary on Sentinel - Vigilant Guardian sentences 3 4 5 and 6 belong in Scribing.
Somebody needed more coffee before deadline = we've all been there.

The old '15 UA Eberron dragonmarks were 1 cantrip 1st 2nd and 3rd level spells.
Looks like they split those into Aberrant Dragonmark at first, and Greaters at level 8+.
Immediately suggests homebrewing Greater Aberrant Dragonmark feats doing a ~pick 'em.

The new ones aren't feats so much as they're Racial variants ( 3 different fluffs for it too ).

"Intuition Dice" only needs the 2nd paragraph for now, unless using the Greater feat, and the "intuition" part is fluff with no fluff other than the word.

Scribing, Healing and Hospitality are like a Variant Human
taking the Magical Training feat, yet compare badly.

Detection - every community wants 1 of these.

Finding - best Tracker yet.

Handling - for the proto ~supermount.

Making - is absolutely lovely.

Passage - semi Rogue dip and double get-out-of-jail.

Sentinel - Initiative and Shield on short rest = we have a winner.

Shadow - some Elves would pick this.  Some.

Storm - wants to give Waterborn Minotaurs a call.

Warding - dwarf communities might not even know they have one of these.
Dwarf teenager 1:  Dude did you get punched by a gnome?
Dwarf teenager 2:  Oh? no.  No it's a dragonmark see when I dippity this I can zippyzappy that and ...

Greaters have to be compared to Racial specific feats.
The extra spells known are very tasty to Ranger + Sorc.

Ultimate Ranger might be part of an extended series of
Ultimate classes done by an '04 era poster Szatany.

Somebody saved the whole pile, from the wotc-pocalypse.

His stuff used to be linked on a bunch of general and early c.o. pages.

The fire at that oldest Museum made front page of nytimes.

Sucks man.
Rough times.

The stabbing will get some attention soon (but competes with hella noise).

Ultimate Ranger may be this :
" ... This is the ultimate Ranger class character folio for the Pathfinder system. ... "

2nd-ing SorO, and it's been an occasional topic since day 1 of 3.0.
Pathfinder went ahead and made one (quite a daring break with ~tradition) :

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: can Sav Species racial progs get Tiers ?
« on: September 05, 2018, 04:49:42 PM »

Well let me qualify that, as a mostly yes.
PAO or Wish or the SS super Wish ritual
are all very expensive ways of getting out.
And 99% not worth doing.

Air Elemental and the elementals in general, are a problem.
If you turn back to p20 it has the Small + Medium details listed.
The smalls should be 2rhd+4la and can Advance to be Mediums.
The progression as written doesn't do that and can't do that,
either small to medium , or either to large.  It only works for Large
in special isolation.  The prog is "correct" at it's last level only.

It's possible that levels 1 and 2 are right.  It's also possible that
"Large+Elementals" are completely different creatures from
"Small+Elementals" or "Medium+Elementals" or say "Huge+Elementals".
This particular argument took place early in 4e too.

Up Coming: Antman 2
So if this takes place before Infinity War you can bet Antman dies. Wasp is needed to complete the trifecta of powerful women, and Paul's comedic tilt it too much for Infinity War Part 2: Title Is Spoilers.

There is a scene in Antman 2 that dovetails directly with Infinity War,
putting it squarely within the IW's timeline.

There's a guy John Urschel, who is an ahead of curve mathematician and
was a Baltimore Raven's lineman until the NFL concussion study came out.
He read it and quit immediately !!   (high Wisdom to go with them Knowledge skills, eh?)
Football's loss , everyone else's gain.  Here's what he's been up to.

General D&D Discussion / Re: Estimating the Best of Two Rolls
« on: September 04, 2018, 06:13:01 PM »
ninja'd except this detail , iirc the +5 is the actual value for Passive checks, perhaps PHB p175 or there'bouts.

The 4E Avenger rolled best of  2d20 for attack rolls, it was generally thought of as analogous to a +4 in guides. I didn't pay attention to the math then, but it does further support your arithmetic.   :cheers

bolded ... but that sorta didn't matter, you either played without having the right math, or somebody blew money on the paid-for-errata and was auto-part of a build.

D&D 5e / Re: Thought Experiment: Character Builds
« on: August 31, 2018, 04:41:33 PM »
Fighter 2 / Assassin 3 / X ... was one of the ~classics back at pre shut down wotc.
That thread generated the most nerfs and erratas , and ever so important tweet-ratas.
But yeah, getting the 2 attacks (or 3) is almost always better = always better without real maths.

2 chances at 8d6 , versus 1 chance at 9d6 = ought to be easy math.
Early damage leader was Fighter 11 / Rogue 9, particular subclass blah blah not so important.

The Sorc and Lock versions were more complicated and iirc caused some of the nerfs.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / can Sav Species racial progs get Tiers ?
« on: August 18, 2018, 03:14:10 PM »
 :??? real question.

Doing the math to convert the LA levels into
real ones, makes say equivalent d5.7 hit dice,
or 1.3 skills per level, same with saves.
Easy enough, though mostly a tier 5 or 6 idea.

But it's not just a matter of how normally strong they are
but also how many options are left when the prog is done.

So like Carnivore's fave the Pixie is almost Tier 0 on it's casting amazeballs,
BUT it's hd skills and saves are hideously dangerous.
That'd make it a fragile Tier 3 , yet could qualify for Nar Demonbinder easily.

Worth doing such an oddball hash ?
 :huh or  :-\

SorO ... yeah it's in the DMG alt proficiency roll instead of set value, goes up with normal prof +4 = d8 , +5 = d10 etc
don't make me get my dmg* out (of storage)

Wilb ... say like ghost and dragon fear are Wis saves or Frightened, lots of similars / minor dumpster dive
don't make me get my mm* out (of storage)

* was pretending to be a good pc for so long

Ambuscade?  Nope.  I haven't seen it.
It's possible something similar is buried
within a Monster entry somewhere, idk.

Vedalken are x2 height Gnomes (wink).
The +d4 is the rolled proficiency thingy
elsewhere, but frozen at lowest tier.
They've effectively got Double Prof early.
Restricted to 1 of the 6 specific skills.
Good enough for any number of builds.
Tools expansion in XGE are a must.

Saw something new today.
A truck was going down the road backwards.
I thought it was being towed, with a warning light spinning.
Got closer = nope.

The "truck" front half was being driven backwards intentionally.
The "back" trailer half was instead a bigger than standard Backhoe.
It's like they (literally) glued the 2 halves together, cutting out
the pickup bed of the truck, and the running gear of the backhoe.

<-- "truck+trailer" , "gear+backhoe" -->
<--- "Truck + Backhoe" --->

It's like the Theurge of work vehicles.
:o who woulda thunk that John Deere was bot watching ye old C.O. board

D&D 5e / Re: Plane Shift : Dominaria
« on: August 08, 2018, 03:19:55 PM »
They do have counting that does work like that,
like spellcasting, a 1/2 level + 2 * 1/3 level = 1
and can go up from there.

But I can see the problem, say with FiChamp 7
where 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 , but with all three abilities
it'd go 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 with the cap.

They handle skill expertise just fine.
The various wordings can be tighter to more clearly
indicate which counting style they're using.
Perhaps I'm asking for too specific a granularity.

D&D 5e / Re: Plane Shift : Dominaria
« on: August 06, 2018, 03:17:44 PM »
hmm I didn't anticipate that.
I was thinking more like Barb AC and Monk AC overlap / not stack.

I can see your post working on set theory along the lines of :
No Prof = zero, and Yes Prof = any number greater than zero.
Or working linguistically as :
adjective noun vs "no adjective" noun , doesn't matter, the noun is the noun.

I'd argue that :  half+half=whole , is simpler.
