Homebrew contests on gitp
« on: August 21, 2012, 10:13:53 PM »
So, they have homebrew contests over there pretty much all the time.  I just entered the newest PrC competition, run by ErrantX.

The theme is Items of Power, and my entry (which is done except for the NPC build) is the Enigmatician.  (I'll port it over here after the contest is done.)

Anyone else entered/entering these things?  Anyone interested in running such a thing over here?

I would be interested to try something like this, but I don't like making PrCs as much. I feel like giving one a completely unique mechanic would be more suited for a base class, and otherwise it ends up too limited and bland. I can never quite find the right balance between the two.

Are there competitions for other things, especially base classes?

I ran one on the old boards.  It fell apart fast, because there is not enough interest here.  Too few people around, and the only people who voted were those who had entered, and then those who entered other competitions, but couldn't enter the current one.

we just need the riight hook to make it interesting to an optimization crowd.

For example: Create a PrC that turns the Samurai into a tier 4 class once you have at least x levels in the PrC.

As far as I can tell this board just doesn't have the homebrew traffic required to make those contests work...

They sound like a good idea but I am not sure we would get enough voters.

We won't.  By the way, sirp: only run that MinMax Awards thing once a year.  At the beginning of each August.  Or maybe maybe twice a year.  That's the only way you'll have enough entries and votes.

I was going to run it max twice a year.  I expect also that the categories will evolve to become more homebrew-focused as we saturate the other categories... but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

As for running such a contest here... I know a lot of us homebrewers have accounts over on gitp and so can just go enter the contests there if we want to get our feet wet.  I just thought it might be nice as a way to inspire some of the really incredible homebrewers on this site to write awesome stuff.  But I know the homebrew optimization contest died very quickly, so you're almost certainly right that we probably wouldn't get many votes.

Hey, it inspired me to do my first homebrew, the Dashing Swordsman that I pretend I didn't write and so have retained no record of it ever existing.  Now, however, I am too busy to do mini-brews, which are what would be required.  Now I do only big projects, hence the Avatar project and my soon to be upcoming Magic of Origins project that I will continue.

Actually I think this could work.  We just have to say "no voting for your own entry", and either have the votes be public or have an independent arbiter to enforce it.

I even have an idea for a prc contest.  I won't arbitrate, though, since I want to enter.

I'd be willing to participate if only for the practice. (I have a dreadful lack of experience in homebrewing)

Well, then, let's do this.  We might as well try one.

Who's interested in entering besides me 'n Pip?  It'll be a PrC contest (because that's the idea I have right now).  We'll do a base class if this goes well.

Who's willing to collect votes & arbitrate?  If no one wants to do this, we'll have non-anonymous voting.

I'll vote-tally and arbitrate, or barring that, enter myself if we settle on non-anon voting.

Sweet.  Do you want to post the contest (I'll give you my idea), or shall I do it?

You have the rules and guidelines in mind already, or at least it sounds that way. Go ahead and PM them to me and I'll post it. Don't worry, I'll credit you somewhere. :P

If you wait until I get home, I may still have the template, and I can give it to you Boz.  Along with contest topic ideas.

EDIT: getting home will take about 2 hours I think.  So expect a response sometime tonight.

That's fine. I'll be packing for most of today, so I should put this up shortly before packing my desktop and transferring a bunch of files.

Sorry, Boz, but it looks like I deleted them a while ago.  It's been over two years since I ran them anyways.
