Custom Prestige Class
« on: November 15, 2013, 02:49:24 AM »
Hello everyone. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to the more advanced areas of D&D. As such I wanted to make a custom prestige class for my character but I'm unsure on how to do so. I was hoping to get some help here.
My character is a Provocateur 2/ Bard 3
He also has three Draconic Feats: Dragontouched, Draconic Heritigae: Battle, and Dragonfire Inspiration
A lot of his background comes from the fact that he has a Dragon Ancestor so I want to keep with the Draconic theme I have going since he also is the most in tune with his Draconic blood for generations
Right now he is the only healer of the group, only support class of the group, the diplomat, one of the big hitters of the group, and the leader.
I want to make him into a diplomancer while keeping with his Draconic side and keep with his combat prowess, I know it's a lot to ask for, hence the custom prestige class.
I thank you in advance for the help.

I know next to nothing about the Provocateur or the draconic feats, but I can whip up something that you could at least use for a spring board for ideas. I'm going on the basis that:
  • You have bard casting
  • You want to primarily focus on fighting
  • You want to focus on Diplomacy

<Insert fancy-sounding, draconic-themed class name here>

Prerequisites

Spellcasting: Ability to spontaneously cast 1st level arcane spells

Feats: One Draconic feat (or something appropriate here. I seroiusly don't know much about those feats).

Skills: Diplomacy 8 ranks.

The <class name>    d12 Hit Dice
Level  BAB  Fort  Ref  Will  Special
            Save  Save Save

_______________________________________________________________________________
1      +1   +2    +2   +2    Claws, dragon scales (+1), energy adaptation
2      +2   +3    +3   +3    Spellcasting +1, breath Weapon
3      +3   +3    +3   +3    Spellcasting +1, wings
4      +4   +4    +4   +4    Bite, Enlarge Person, dragon scales (+2)
5      +5   +4    +4   +4    Spellcasting +1
6      +6   +5    +5   +5    Spellcasting +1
7      +7   +5    +5   +5    Tail, dragon scales (+3)
8      +8   +6    +6   +6    Spellcasting +1
9      +9   +6    +6   +6    Spellcasting +1
10     +10  +7    +7   +7    Draconic transformation, dragon scales (+4)
_______________________________________________________________________________

Skill points per level: 4. Class Skills: Appraise, Bluff, Concentration, Craft, Diplomacy, Disguise, Gather Information, Intimidate, Knowledge (Arcane), Knowledge (Dungeoneering), Listen, Perform, Profession, Search, Sense Motive, Speak Language, Spellcraft, and Spot.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: a <class name> gains no new proficiencies with weapons and armor.

Claws (Ex): A <class name> gains two claw attacks as primary natural attacks that each deal 1d6 points of damage (or 1d4 if small-sized) plus her Strength modifier. She may opt to hold a weapon in one hand and make a claw attack with her off hand at a -5 penalty to hit.

Dragon Scales (Ex): At 1st level, a <class name> becomes more like a dragon. She chooses a dragon type (black, blue, green, red, white, brass, bronze, copper, gold, or silver) and grows scales of the appropriate color. This grants her a +1 enhancement bonus to her natural armor bonus. This bonus increases by +1 every three class levels thereafter. A character without a natural armor bonus is treated as having an effective natural armor bonus of +0.

Energy Adaptation (Ex): The <class name> gains energy resistance equal to her class level + 10. The type of enegy resistance granted is based on the type of dragon she chose for her Dragon Scales ability.

Color    Energy Type
____________________
black    acid
blue     electricity
green    acid
red      fire
white    cold
brass    fire
bronze   electricity
copper   acid
gold     fire
silver   cold
____________________

Spellcasting: At 2nd level, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in whatever arcane spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If a character had more than one arcane spellcasting class before she became a <class name>, she must decide to which class she adds each level of <class name> for the purpose of determining spells per day.

Breath Weapon (Ex): At 2nd level, the <class name> gains a breath weapon that she can use every 1d4 rounds. The breath weapon deals 1d6 points of dmage per character level, with a Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 her character level + her Constitution modifier) for half damage. The shape of the breath weapon and type of energy damage is based on her dragon color:

Color    Breath Type
________________________________
black    60' line of acid
blue     60' line of electricity
green    30' cone of acid
red      30' cone of fire
white    30' cone of cold
brass    60' line of fire
bronze   60' line of electricity
copper   60' line of acid
gold     30' cone of fire
silver   30' cone of cold
________________________________

Wings (Ex): At 3rd level, the <class name> grows wings and gains a fly speed equal to twice her base land speed with average maneuverability.

Bite (Ex): At 4th level, the <class name> gains a bite attack as a secondary natural attack (-5 penalty on the attack roll during a full attack). This attack deals 1d8 points of damage (1d6 if small sized) plus half her Strength modifier.

Enlarge Person: At 4th level, the <class name> adds Enlarge Spell to her list of spells known, as a 1st level spell.

Tail (Ex): At 7th level, the <class name> grows a tail, and may use it as a secondary natural attack (-5 penalty on the attack roll during a full attack). This attack deals 1d8 points of damage (1d6 if small) plus half-again her Strength modifier, and is considered a reach weapon. She may attack adjacent creatures with this tail attack without penalty. If the tail hits an opponent, she may make a free trip attempt against the creature and does not risk falling down on a failed attempt.

Draconic Transformation (Ex): At 10th level, the <class name>'s type changes to dragon, and she gains all the appropriate traits. She also gains immunity to her selected energy type. She may still affect herself with her Enlarge Person spell.

Analysis
This should be relatively tanky and have some good versatility from the casting advancement. You will primarily play as a fighter-type with some extra tricks on the side. The breath weapon deals on okay amount of damage, but can't be used all the time. It's best for dealing with large numbers of weaker opponents. By the time you get wings and at-will flight, you're 8th level, which is almost when casters are using Overland Flight all day long anyway.

It's a home brew class I built: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=273748

@Robbypants That's a good class but I forgot to mention that a lot of his draconic power goes into his bardic music through dragonfire inspiration so I was hoping to expand upon that. Also I wanted to focus on diplomacy and support and just wanted him to be able to hold his own in a fight. I like the class and I might use it for a backup character so thank you and I'm sorry I didn't fully explain what I wanted.

RP knows about the Foch Lyrist ,
so then going 6/10 casting allows
building back in plenty of things.

edit -- quick reads the link ...
yeah also advancing the "Stunts"
at an 8/10 rate would work fine.

Oh, I thought I should mention that Dragonfire Inspiration gives +xd6 to damage whe using Inspire Courage, x=bonus from Inspire Courage. Also he has 8 ranks in Preform Singing and 8 ranks in Diplomacy. Singing is the only Preform he can do. He also knows pretty much all languages except Druidic if that helps at all.

EDIT: As soon as I posted this I thought of a couple things. Firstly, this thread should probably be moved to the Homebrew section. I didnt realize that section existed when I posted the thread and I don't know how to move it myself. Secondly, I thought of a concept for the class. I call it The Draconic Herald of War and Peace. Using his ancestry the Herald can enhance his social skills (Charisma, Diplomacy, Bluff, etc.) I don't know if it should be a natutal thing that goes up with levels or something like Stunts but either could be fun. Also, when The Herald uses Bardic Music that has "Inspire" he gains Dragon like abilities. The Heralds levels also count as Bard levels for the sake of Bardic Music progression and how many times it can be used. Maybe for Bardic knowledge as well. I think this class could work if done well.

That's fine. It's literally something I came up with in under half an hour. I don't know enough about draconic bard stuff to be able to make anything useful in that regard. I didn't specifically advance anything Diplomacy wise (other than granting it as a class skill) because I figured if you were playing a bard, you'd have access to Charm Person, Suggestion, and similar stuff.

You'd think that but I'm not high enough level for suggestion and I don't use Charm Person often, I should probably do that more often.

Otherwise I think the BAB, saves, and skills should similar if not the same as the Bard's. The problem I'm having is how to work out the extra bonuses and how to balance them, not to mention how they should progress through levels. Thats the part I'll need some help brainstorming with at the very least.
