Off Topic Fun / DVD Authoring Suggestions
« on: November 22, 2014, 03:42:11 PM »
I'm downloading episodes of Liddsville off Youtube for a friend.  Since he doesn't have internet access, I plan to write them to a DVD for him to play in his Blu-ray player.  I'd also like to include a menu so he can easily choose which episode to play.

I've never done this before.  Does anyone know of a free program for Windows 7 that would allow me to do it?

If it matters, I write data files to DVDs fairly often, and I vaguely remember doing one to play in a DVD player, but I've never wanted to add a menu.

Thanks.

Gaming Advice / Mind's Eye Archive - The Pet Rock

Wotc's Mind's Eye Archive   http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/psi
near the bottom, it lists "The Pet Rock" (03/22/2002), but it's a broken link.  Does anybody have it?

Gaming Advice / Map-A-Week
« on: August 28, 2014, 01:57:18 AM »
WOTC has a Map-A-Week archive (located at http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mwa/archiveall )

Just what are these?  Are they maps pulled out of adventures?  Is the text elsewhere?  Or are they just maps for inspiration and you have to add a plot and monsters yourself?

Gaming Advice / How to save a web page as a pdf?
« on: August 15, 2014, 07:22:09 PM »
Does anybody have a good (but free) way to save a web page as a pdf?  Particularly, WOTC web pages.

For example, Fight Club - Alistrianna Malaugrym Duelist

I can use the "printer friendly" link to remove the extra junk.  I can use "File -> Print" and select a pdf printer to save it to a pdf file.  But the pdf printer I have adds its own junk to the file (namely a header and trailer line on each page).

Any suggestions?

Gaming Advice / blindsight vs blindsense
« on: July 29, 2014, 12:26:01 AM »
In MM1, dragons have blindsense 60 ft.
In MM2,  dragons have blindsight 30 x age category.

I'm guessing this is because the MM1 is 3.5 and the MM2 is 3.0.  But what's the difference between blindsense and blindsight?

Here's the descriptions from the manuals:
Quote
Blindsense (Ex): Dragons can pinpoint creatures within a distance of 60 feet. Opponents the dragon can’t actually see still have total concealment against the dragon.
Quote
Blindsight (Ex): A dragon can ascertain its surroundings by nonvisual means (mostly hearing and scent, but also by noticing vibration and other environmental clues). This ability enables it to discern objects and creatures within a range of 30 feet × the dragon’s age category. The dragon usually does not need to make Spot or Listen checks to notice creatures within range of its blindsight.

Gaming Advice / Steel Dragons - Minor Arcane Shield
« on: July 14, 2014, 03:51:04 PM »
On the Steel Dragons Abilities by Age Chart (Dragons of Faerun, p141),

Very Young Steel Dragons get Minor Arcane Shield
Young Steel Dragons get Moderate Arcane Shield

But the book only lists what a moderate arcane shield is, and never tells what a minor arcane shield is.

Quote
Moderate Arcane Shield (Su): A steel dragon gets a +10 bonus on its spell resistance against all arcane spells of 4th level or lower.

Any ideas what minor does?

Thanks.

Gaming Advice / Into the Darkness - A Demo Adventure
« on: July 06, 2014, 03:00:05 AM »
Looking for another WOTC web adventure.  It's called "Into the Darkness".  It seems to be on some lists of what WOTC offered, but not on others.  Can't find any trace of it on WOTC or the Wayback Machine.  But I did find

http://www.tsrinfo.net/~brenfrow/3e/intodark.htm

so I know it actually exists.  Anybody have it or know where I can get it?  My google-fu is failing me  :tantrum

Gaming Advice / The Kopru Ruins - Stormwrack Web Enhancement

The Kopru Ruins - Stormwrack Web Enhancement

Does anybody know where I can get this from?  It's a free web enhancement from WOTC.  They have it listed here.  But the link is broken.  I've tried Google, but that only leads me back to the Wizards site, or to torrents which I like to avoid.

Thanks.

Edit: extra smilies to anybody who emails it to my profile :)

Gaming Advice / How did they get the price for a Staff of Healing?
« on: July 02, 2014, 10:35:22 AM »
How did they compute the price for a staff of healing?

Staff of Healing, DMG, p244
(click to show/hide)

cost = (caster level ) x (spell level) x 750gp / (number of charges)
Minimum caster level for a staff is 8th level.

Lesser Restoration = 8 x 2 x 750 = 12,000
Cure Serious Wounds = 8 x 3 x 750 = 18,000
Remove blindness/deafness = 8 x 3 x 750 / 2 = 9,000
Remove disease = 8 x 3 x 750 / 3 = 6,000

So doing the 100%, 75%, 50%, 50% thing

Lesser Restoration = 8 x 2 x 750 = 12,000 * 75% = 9,000
Cure Serious Wounds = 8 x 3 x 750 = 18,000
Remove blindness/deafness = 8 x 3 x 750 / 2 = 9,000 * 50% = 4,500
Remove disease = 8 x 3 x 750 / 3 = 6,000 * 50% = 3,000

total cost = 9,000 + 18,000 + 4,500 + 3,000 = 34,500gp
or actually 34,800gp since the physical masterwork staff itself costs 300gp

But book price = 27,750gp

Where did I go wrong?   :???

Gaming Advice / Can dragons use weapons?
« on: June 28, 2014, 12:31:56 PM »
Can dragons use weapons?  I'm not talking about items that enhance their natural attacks, I'm talking about grasping a sword in their claws and going to town.

Or to put it another way, can they use a manufactured weapon to get iterative attacks, then add their natural attacks on top of it (except for the claw holding the weapon)

Gaming Advice / Dracohydra
« on: June 25, 2014, 12:56:48 PM »
A dracohydra (Dragons of Faerun, p6) is a cross between a hydra and a dragon, and thus has multiple heads.
Quote
Dracohydras get all the normal attacks of a dragon,
except that each head gets its own bite attack, and all
attacks other than bite and breath weapon are made at –
1 to hit for each opponent it is attacking, because the
creature has trouble coordinating body attacks while its
heads are going separate ways
.

Does this really mean that if all the heads attack the same target, all the other attacks are still at -1 penalty?  Or should it be at "-1 per add'l opponent"?

General D&D Discussion / Faerun vs Forgotten Realms
« on: June 24, 2014, 08:44:27 PM »
I'm trying to organize my D&D files on my computer.  I've got a folder for non-campaign specific books (Core, Complete, etc)and a folder for Eberron.  But then I came to Faerun and Forgotten Realms.  As I understand it, Faerun is part of Forgotten Realms, but when I look at various lists of books, they seem to be seperated in two lists.  One that lists only Faerun books, and one that includes them amoung FR books.  So now I'm wondering if I should make 2 seperate folders, but them all in one folder, make Faerun a subfolder under FR, or what.  Any suggestions?

Gaming Advice / Incarnum Dragon
« on: June 18, 2014, 02:12:40 PM »
Incarnum Dragon (MOI, p173)
Quote
Breath Weapon (Su): An incarnum dragon’s breath weapon is a cone of resonating energy that separates incarnum from living matter and deals damage to creatures (but not to objects). Every creature within the area must make a Reflex save or be temporarily drained of essentia. This effect reduces the essentia pool of each target by a number of points equal to the dragon’s age category for 1 hour.  A successful Fortitude save halves both the damage dealt and the essentia drained. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Would the damage affect constructs?  Undead?

Also, I had assume it wouldn't harm anything that doesn't need to make FORT-based saving throws, but it would still drain essentia if somehow the creature had it (eg a vampire with incarnum classes).  But then I got to thinking about magic items that store essentia and if it should drain those as well.  Now I'm thinking the breath weapon wouldn't work to seperate constructs/undead from essentia, and the breath weapon would be totally useless against them.

Gaming Advice / Rust Dragon
« on: June 18, 2014, 12:22:48 PM »
Some Rust Dragon (Draco, p186) questions.

Quote
Rusting Bite (Ex): A rust dragon that makes a successful bite attack causes metal armor worn by the target creature to corrode, falling to pieces and becoming useless immediately. A dragon can also use its bite attack to target a weapon or other metal object, of course. The size of the object is immaterial—a full suit of armor rusts away as quickly as a sword. Magic metal items are allowed Reflex saves against a DC equal to the dragon’s breath weapon save DC.

Are there any to-hit modifications for target something special, eg a sword, or the chain holding an amulet, or the belt buckle, etc?  It seems like there should be something, as these are harder to hit than the target's armor or shield, but I don't see anything.

When it says "the size of the object is immaterial", it's talking about how quickly it rusts away, not how easy it is to hit.

Quote
Rusting Scales (Ex): A metal weapon with less than a +5 enhancement bonus that hits a wyrm or great wyrm rust dragon corrodes and is destroyed immediately, with no saving throw. A +5 weapon deals damage normally, but then must succeed on a Reflex save (DC equal to the dragon’s breath weapon save DC) or rust away.

I assume this means a +5 to hit enhancement bonus, and not a total of +5 in enhancements.  Eg, vorpal costs the same as a +5 bonus, so a +1 Vorpal Sword costs the same as a +6 sword, but the +1 vorpal sword would rust and be destroyed immediately, no saving throw.  Right?

Thanks.

MM2, p78
Quote
Planar Travel (Su): Gem dragons have the innate ability
to pass instantly between the Material Plane and the Inner
Planes, where they often make their homes.

I assume "instantly" is really a standard action but I could be wrong.

General D&D Discussion / 5E Digital Aids
« on: June 14, 2014, 08:29:57 AM »
5e will have digital character creation and adventure planning tools

Didn't 4E rollout with a big hubbub of digital integration?  I never used it, but what was the good and bad?
What would people like to see in a digital toolset for D&D?

Gaming Advice / Wildshape & EX ability
« on: June 12, 2014, 06:44:48 PM »
My druid has the Dragon Wildshape feat.

A fang dragon has sound imitation (Draconomicon, p160)
Quote
Sound Imitation (Ex): A fang dragon can mimic any
voice or sound it has heard, anytime it likes. Listeners must
succeed on a Will save (DC equal to that of the dragon’s
frightful presence
) to detect the ruse.

Frightful presence DC (MM1, p69)
Quote
A potentially affected creature that succeeds on a
Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 dragon’s HD + dragon’s Cha modifier)
remains immune to that dragon’s frightful presence
for 24 hours.

What exactly do I use for the number of HD?  Suppose my PC is commoner3/druid-12, aka 15 HD, changes into a medium fang dragon with 9HD.  Do I use 9, 12, or 15?

Thanks.

Gaming Advice / How to keep a block of text on same page
« on: June 11, 2014, 02:09:47 PM »
I'm working on something and I'm doing lots of creature stat blocks.  I'd like the whole block to stay on 1 page.  I don't want to insert manual page breaks between every monster, because if 2 or 3 can fit on a page, then I want 2 or 3 on a page.  Is there a way to highlight a block of text lines and say always print on same page?

I'm using Librewriter, though Openoffice probably has the exact same command.  MS Office probably has it too, though with a different way of making it happen, but even a keyword to google on might be helpful.

Thanks.

Is there a prestige class that advances 2 divine casting classes?  Specifically Adept & Druid.  (Adept is the NPC class from the DMG)

Thanks.

Gaming Advice / Beastland Ferocity Spell
« on: April 07, 2014, 02:17:37 PM »
Beastland Ferocity
Quote
You cast the spell and lay your hand upon your ally, and beneath your glowing fingers, give him a mixed gift—the ability to fight on, but at the cost of not knowing when to stop.

The subject becomes such a tenacious combatant that it continues to fight without penalty even while disabled or dying. While between —1 and —9 hit points, the creature gains a +4 enhancement bonus to Strength. If the creature is reduced to —10 hit points, it dies normally.

Can the target do other things than fight, eg heal herself?
