Gaming Advice / Two Weapon Fighting .... but not
« on: April 06, 2014, 09:02:29 AM »
Once you hit BAB +6, you get 2 attacks, +6/+1.  Is there anything that says both attacks have to come from the same weapon?  Eg, can I hit with the sword in my left hand at +6, then swing the axe in my right hand at +1?  Attacking with 2 weapons, but not using the TWF rules (and not getting any extra attacks either)

Off Topic Fun / Why do phone apps need to know my location?
« on: February 20, 2014, 12:52:16 AM »
I've noticed when installing apps on my phone, a lot of them need to know my location.  Even things like a flashlight and battery meter.  Obviously they DON'T need to know my location for their main purpose.  I've been assuming it's so they can target ads at me more effectively.  But is there a more nefarious reason  :???

Gaming Advice / Bards, shields, & arcane spell failure
« on: January 23, 2014, 01:12:15 PM »
A Bard can use light armor and ignore the arcane spell failure.

A shield may have an arcane spell failure.  Eg, a light steel shield has a 5% spell failure.

Can bards ignore the spell failure from shields?  Or is it from some shields and not others?

Gaming Advice / Sap, nonlethal

I'm pretty sure a sap does non-lethal instead of lethal, but does anyone know where in the PHB it says so?

Gaming Advice / How much can a flyer carry?
« on: January 16, 2014, 12:46:16 AM »
How much can a flying creature carry?  I want to say no more than a "light" load, but where do the rules state that?

General D&D Discussion / PC Gen
« on: November 26, 2013, 08:28:22 PM »
Does anybody use PC-Gen?  I remember trying it out a long long time ago, but apparently decided doing things by hand was better for some reason, though I can't remember why.  I assume it's because it includes SRD stuff, but not most 3.5 stuff.

Are there data sets available for all of 3.5?  What are people's thoughts and experiences?

Thanks.

Gaming Advice / Force WSA

Force WSA, MIC-35
Quote
A projectile weapon with the force prop-
erty turns ammunition shot from it into a
force attack. These force projectiles auto-
matically overcome damage reduction
and
suffer no miss chance against incorporeal
targets, but they don't damage creatures
immune to force effects.

Does this apply to dash DR, eg "DR 3/-"?
What creatures are immune to force effects?

Gaming Advice / Skirmish with mount
« on: November 07, 2013, 03:31:40 AM »
If the scout's mount moves 10', is that sufficient to let the scout use her skirmish ability?
What about teleporting (eg Anklets of Translocation teleports you 10' as a swift action)?

Gaming Advice / Blood Seeking Property
« on: November 06, 2013, 09:42:47 PM »
Blood Seeking is a +1 weapon special ability in Complete Warrior
Quote
Description: Weapons with the blood seeking ability often have strange looking sights on them.
Ammunition fired from blood seeking weapons flies around cover if necessary to strike a living creature,
negating any bonus to Armor Class the target might have due to intervening cover. The shooter can even
fire at a target with full cover
, but she must know the target is there, there must be an unobstructed path for
the ammunition to reach the target, and the target still has total concealment (and thus a 50% miss chance).
The blood seeking ability doesn’t function against plants, oozes, undead, and constructs.

Does this mean it can shoot around corners?  Eg, if I'm on one side of a house and my target is on the other side of the house, I can shoot and it will fly around the house to hit him?

Gaming Advice / Teleportation Circle on a Carpet
« on: November 06, 2013, 04:52:28 PM »
Quote
You create a circle on the floor or other
horizontal surface
that teleports, as greater
teleport, any creature who stands on it to a
designated spot. Once you designate the
destination for the circle, you can’t change
it. The spell fails if you attempt to set the
circle to teleport creatures into a solid
object, to a place with which you are not
familiar and have no clear description, or
to another plane.

Can I put this on a carpet that I can roll up and take with me?  Can I make the destination another carpet?  The plan would be to make 2 circles, both permanent.  One would teleport to a stronghold, making looting, or just going home for dinner, easy.  The other would be at the stronghold and the destination would be the other carpet, making returning easy.

Gaming Advice / Runestaff, Duskblade, and Wizard-1
« on: November 06, 2013, 03:03:35 PM »
To use a runestaff, the spell must appear on your class list.  This really limits which spells a duskblade can use from such a staff.  On the other hand, almost all of runestaff's spells are on a wizard's list.  If my duskblade takes 1 level of wizard, can he use duskblade spells to power casting a spell that's on the wizard list but not on the duskblades?  (I hope that's clear)

Example:  Runestaff of the Assassin has Greater Invisibility.  That's a Wiz-4 spell.  Can I sacrifice a 4th level duskblade spell slot to cast it?

MIC, p224
Quote
A runestaff allows its wielder to use her own arcane energy to
generate magical effects. Typically, a runestaff has anywhere
from two to five spells. By expending a prepared arcane spell or
arcane spell slot, the wielder can cast a spell of the same level or
lower from the runestaffs list, as long as that spell also appears
on the wielder's class spell list.
The spell is treated exactly as if the
wielder cast the spell herself, including caster level, save DC, and
any other effects related to the spell. Unless stated otherwise in
the runestaffs description, each spell can be cast from a runestaff
three times per day.

Gaming Advice / Robilar's Gambit

Robilar's Gambit says
Quote
At the start of your action, you can adopt a fighting stance that exposes you to harm but allows you to take advantage of your opponents' exposed defenses as they reach in to attack you. Anyone who strikes at you gains a +4 bonus on attack rolls and damage rolls against you. In return, they provoke attacks of opportunity from you each time they swing. Resolve your attack of opportunity after your foe's attack.

Do only melee attacks provoke AOOs for the gambit, or do all attacks, including ranged and magic?
And is there a way to do an AOO at range?

Gaming Advice / True Believer & UMD
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:34:40 AM »
Can you use UMD and the True Believer feat to access relic abilities?

In particular, I want to use the Gauntlets of the Blood Lord (MIC-101) gets the automatic Empower on touch spells.  But I'm not evil, I don't worship Hextor, and my spells are arcane, not divine (though I don't need to sacrafice a spell with the True Believer feat).

I'm guessing the answer is no, since UMD starts out with

Gaming Advice / Dragon Crush Attack
« on: November 03, 2013, 12:52:37 PM »
Dragon Crush Attack from SRD
Quote
Crush (Ex)
This special attack allows a flying or jumping dragon of at least Huge size to land on opponents as a standard action, using its whole body to crush them. Crush attacks are effective only against opponents three or more size categories smaller than the dragon (though it can attempt normal overrun or grapple attacks against larger opponents).

A crush attack affects as many creatures as can fit under the dragon’s body. Creatures in the affected area must succeed on a Reflex save (DC equal to that of the dragon’s breath weapon) or be pinned, automatically taking bludgeoning damage during the next round unless the dragon moves off them. If the dragon chooses to maintain the pin, treat it as a normal grapple attack. Pinned opponents take damage from the crush each round if they don’t escape.

Specifically, a young adult gold dragon (huge) crushing small or smaller victims
What happens if the victim(s) make his saving throw?  Is he still under the dragon, or does he get moved to the nearest not under the dragon space?
What if there's a creature to big to crush in the space?  Is he treated as auto saving, or is the dragon just not allowed to land in that space?

Gaming Advice / Dancing Weapons
« on: July 06, 2013, 04:45:37 PM »
Dancing Weapon
Quote
Dancing: As a standard action, a dancing weapon can be loosed
to attack on its own. It fights for 4 rounds using the base attack
bonus of the one who loosed it and then drops. While dancing, it
cannot make attacks of opportunity, and the person who activated
it is not considered armed with the weapon. In all other respects,
it is considered wielded or attended by the creature for all maneuvers
and effects that target items (such as the sunder action or a
heat metal spell). While dancing, it takes up the same space as the
activating character and can attack adjacent foes (weapons with
reach can attack opponents up to 10 feet away). The dancing
weapon accompanies the person who activated it everywhere,
whether she moves by physical or magical means. If the wielder
who loosed it has an unoccupied hand, she can grasp it while it is
attacking on its own as a free action; when so retrieved the weapon
can’t dance (attack on its own) again for 4 rounds.

Does the weapon get it's first attack on the same round as activated?
Does it get iterative attacks?
Can it be applied to a bow?

General D&D Discussion / Windows 8 Phone Dice Rolling App
« on: July 06, 2013, 11:34:47 AM »
Is there a good dice rolling app for a windows 8 phone?

What I'd like is to be able to enter several die rolls I need, and then be able to push a button to roll them.  Eg,

1) To Hit: d20 + 13
2) Damage: 3d6 + 1d6 (fire) + 5d6 (shocking grasp) + 7
3) Damage: 3d6 + 1d6 (fire) + 6d6 (vampiric touch) + 7
4) Bow to hit: d20 + 9
5) Bow damage: 1d8 + 5

I'd enter the dice once with a label, and then could roll as often as I need
It should show the total as well as individual dice.
It'd also be great if the dice were color coded or labelable (is that a word?), so I could tell which damage is which, in case I find my target is immune to fire or electricity or whatever.

Anyone know of one?  Thanks.

Edit: Oh yeah, it'd also be nice if it could do several dice rolls with 1 button hit.  Eg,
to hit: d20 + 13, d20 + 8, d20 + 3

Min/Max 3.x / Duskblade with Unlimited Wealth
« on: July 06, 2013, 10:31:12 AM »
So my DM is doing the Monty Haul thing.  We can have anything we want, up to and including artifacts.  I would like to limit it to the books we have though - DMG, MM 1-4, most of the Complete Books, most of the Races book, Draconomicon, Sandstorm, Stormwrack, Frostburn, MIC, and a few others I'm not remembering.  No Dragon mag, no Nine Swords, no Eberron, no Faerun.
Edit: also have Miniture's Handbook, Unearthed Arcana, PHB2, BOED, BOVD.

My Duskblade is 11th level - Goliath (ECL 1) + Duskblade 10.
Other party members are a Gnome Bard/Fighter, Elven Sorceror, Elven Fighter (archer), Half-elf rogue.  None of my companions are optimized in the least.

Suggestions?  I'm actually more into oddball/humorous than power, though power is good too.

FWIW, I'll start with the 6 books that add +5 to each stat

Gaming Advice / Max Spell Dice Damage & Extra Damage Dice
« on: July 05, 2013, 08:34:53 AM »
Some spells have a maximum amount of dice damage, such as Shocking Grasp "max 5d6" or Vampiric Touch "max 10d6".

Some items, like the Ring of Piercing Spells, give extra damage dice.  +2d6 in this case.

Is the extra damage dice limited by the max damage dice?  Eg, is Shocking Grasp w/ring limited to 5d6?  Or would it go up to 7d6?

Gaming Advice / Vampiric Touch and Duskblades
« on: June 29, 2013, 08:51:43 AM »
Vampiric Touch
Quote
You must succeed on a melee touch attack. Your touch deals 1d6 points of damage per two caster levels (maximum 10d6). You gain temporary hit points equal to the damage you deal. However, you can’t gain more than the subject’s current hit points +10, which is enough to kill the subject. The temporary hit points disappear 1 hour later.

If a duskblade channels this through his weapon, does he gain temp hit points equal to all the damage (weapon + spell) or just for the spell?  I lean toward just spell damage, but Captnq's spell book says different.

And when I combine this with the duskblade's 13th level ability to hit multiple targets with the same spell, does the temp hp stack since they're with just 1 spell, or do I just get the best one?
