Dracohydra
« on: June 25, 2014, 12:56:48 PM »
A dracohydra (Dragons of Faerun, p6) is a cross between a hydra and a dragon, and thus has multiple heads.
Quote
Dracohydras get all the normal attacks of a dragon,
except that each head gets its own bite attack, and all
attacks other than bite and breath weapon are made at –
1 to hit for each opponent it is attacking, because the
creature has trouble coordinating body attacks while its
heads are going separate ways
.

Does this really mean that if all the heads attack the same target, all the other attacks are still at -1 penalty?  Or should it be at "-1 per add'l opponent"?

That's the way it's written, although it clashes somewhat with the flavor text. I think it's just supposed to be a little rubbish at attacking because of its badly confused parents.

Also, how does someone get a dragon and a hydra to mate? A hell of a lot of Lionel Ritchie?

In the D&D universe, dragons and humans will mate with anything, and any pairing is capable of producing offspring.

True... But given all the other options they have, why go with a hydra? Could get a cute bulette instead, for instance.

If you are attacking 5 enemies, every attack that isn't a bite or breath weapon would be at a -5 to hit.
If 8 enemies, -8 to hit on all non-bite/breath weapon attacks.
3 enemies, -3 to hit.

I love the weird Faerun stuff so much :D

That's another question -- usually a dragon breathes or attacks, but can't breath with his head while attacking with his claws & wings.  But I get the impression the dracohydra is different - it can bite and claw and wing while other heads are breathing.  If I ever use one, I'll probably play it so that as long as 1 head is biting, then it can claw and wing while the other heads breath, but if all heads breath, then it can't claw and wing.

Double-checking on the source, here, but the table of contents for Dragons of Faerun never mentions "dracohydras (though other monsters are listed)."  Where are they exactly?

It's not in the official "Forgotten Realms - Dragons of Faerun". The only source with this title I could come up with is this.

Interesting that those are True Dragons.  Most other draconic hybrids aren't.

Now I'm confused.  The book you linked to isn't the official "Forgotten Realms - Dragons of Faerun" book?

It's Homebrew - says it on page #2.

A very finely crafted homebrew book I must admit. The first thing I noticed was the short length, only on a second reading I noticed the introduction. The real book is here (yeah yeah, shitty version) and a "little" bit longer.

He's taken the artwork from an older book (one of the Monster Manuals, based on the cover), and stripped out the text, replacing it with his own. The dragon images, on the other hand, are either from 2e books or 3rd party sources, I think. Although I recognize the deep dragon image, so that might be 3rd somewhere.

Well, that explains it then.  Didn't realize it was homebrew.

Though that does explain why the yellow dragon is different from the one in Dragon Compendium.
