Bonus hp question
« on: July 03, 2023, 01:16:44 AM »
Summon Monster 1 allows you to summon a fiendish raven with 1/4 HD, 1hp.  CON is 10.
Augment Summoning boosts the CON to 14, which gives +2hp/HD.  But it doesn't have a full HD, only a 1/4 HD. Does it still get the full +2 hp? I assume so, especially since the alternative is half a hp.

Yes it gets full Con modifier to HP.

The fractional HD only applies to the d8 that animals get as HD for being animal type.

There doesn't seem to be a clear indicator on it afaict. Some people do appear to just multiply con by the fractional HD. Some don't. And when I was was looking for examples of fractional HD, all I found were stat blocks carefully featuring 10 or 11 con, making them useless as indicators.

Incidentally, it's possible to get fractional HD on non-animals through the Child template.

These may be of use:

Monstrous scorpion, tiny, SRD, 1/2 d8 +2 (4 hp), Con 14
Grig, SRD, 1/2 d6+1 (2 hp), Con 13
Neogi spawn, MM2, 1/4 d8-1 (1 hp), Con 9
Jermlaine, MM2, 1/2 d6-1 (1 hp), Con 8

Thanks. The monstrous scorpion makes it clear. Other creatures with 1/4 d8 +0 (cat, lizard, weasel, monstrous centipede) all have 2 hp. So 1/4 d8 +2 = 4 makes it obvious the entire +2 is added.
