I've DMed this at 3am during a gaming marathon. It was horrible and glorious and I'm definitely doing this again some time. Three people had some form of martial arts skills, but the last player had the shockingly effective "cooking with unusual ingredients" to compensate. Most notable obsessions were "playing with other people's toys" and "talking to a plant and getting an answer". The details are hazy (it was 3am) but the game featured a daring escape from a police van on a skippyball, guards being turned into salad, and a benny hill chase scene through a hospital ward.

I think it got released at Spiel this year. The theme seems to be 'effects when buying/gaining cards', and it's been a lot of fun so far. Here you go.

When I played it the first time, it seemed like a very interesting skill-based game. You're constantly making decisions that influence you and your opponents' plans.  That first game ended with a 5-point difference between the first and the last player.

Then we played it some more. Same thing happened. Sometimes, if nobody intervenes, a runaway science player gets a big win. More often, everyone intervenes, and science loses. Overall, if nobody makes any big mistakes (leaving yourself unable to access a resource, letting a science player play all the science), all scores are within 10 points of each other, and a win is based on luck.

My gaming group's conclusion was that the game was, in a strange way, too balanced. Say it's round one, and you have the option of playing a blue card for points, a red card for military, or a resource card for more options next round... all will earn you roughly the same amount of points. We stopped playing pretty soon after that.

The first ten games were great fun however, and it's a game that's fun the first time you play it. So if you play games with new people every now and then, it might be worth it?

I've played a lot of Dominion, most of it Basic+Intrigue. I'm a big fan of Chapel, Remodel, or any card that allows trashing.

My gaming group recently acquired Hinterlands, so we're currently deconstructing that. The same thing is happening as when we got Intrigue: The first month, everyone plays ludicrously farfetched combo decks. There's a lot of nice cards in Hinterlands (Spice Merchant, Scheme, Highway) but I think I like Border Village the best, because it sits at the Gold slot, encouraging people to try crazy combos instead of Big Money.

Introduce Yourself / Hello everyone

Hey everyone, I'm Ruud. I've been playing D&D for about 6 years. I'm also an avid boardgame player, thanks to my university's board game club. My favorites are probably Race for the Galaxy and Dominion, but I play a lot of different games.

I've been lurking on the WotC CO forums, on BG, and now I'll resume lurking here. ;>>
