To me this feels like a weaker core Wizard than a normal strength Anima Mage.  Not sure I like the feel of it though it isn't weak sauce.

For example how does that compare to a straight Wizard?
1b Improved Initiative, Empower Spell
3 Craft Wonderous
5 Craft Wand
6 Maximize Spell
9 Quicken Spell
10 Craft Rod
12 Spell Penetration
15b Greater Spell Penetration, Craft Staff
18 Widen Spell

Wouldn't the free metamagic, increased spell slots, and vestiges add some amount of power? I thought Anime Mage was a really good PrC... or is there really nothing you can do with it when restricted mostly to core?

Is the main draw of Anima Mage its ability to access an Extended Persisted polymorph?

Useless only because I would get Quicken at the very end of our campaign if even.
Why?

Because the campaign would most likely end before we hit level 12?

I'm confused.  Anima mage bypasses metamagic level adjustment, so you can start using Quicken as soon as you get vestige metamagic at 9th, not that I endorse this kind of action multiplication abuse or that 9th is particularly early.

I suppose taking it at 9th is alright. Though I probably incorrectly assumed an improved familiar imp would provide more utility.

edit: Actually Heighten seems... not so amazing on a Wizard compared to a Sorcerer. What would be better to replace it? Extend is apparently not worth taking since it is cheap to buy. Sculpt Spell won't be available most likely.

Slight bump, but it appears Vestige Metamagic cannot actually be used with Heighten Spell. I feel like only taking Quicken at 12th is a good way to make one of the most amazing abilities of the class kind of useless. Any recommendations for what two metamagics to pick? :(

Getting your familiar into direct combat is always risky business... due to the XP loss if it dies.

As a familiar, it's BAB is equal to yours (and changing your form/shape never changes your BAB, anyway).

I'd suggest you keep it well protected, but have it use wands (via UMD ranks) as needed (it could even hide under your robes and use healing/buffing/etc wands on you without exposing itself at all, for example).

Here is a thread you might find useful: http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=9955.0

Thanks  :)

Given an available stat spread of say... 16/14/14/13/8/12

It would be best to go: 16 Intelligence, 14 Constitution, 14 Dexterity, 13 Charisma, 12 Wisdom, 8 Strength. Right?

Or is boosting Charisma actually more important than Dexterity because I need to make successful Binding checks to use Exploit Vestige?

Also what Vestiges should be my general go to Vestiges?

Imps have fly 50' (perfect) in their natural form. I might choose the raven so it can still fly, and so it can be disguised as something innocuous (instead of a devil :P ). It also might explain why it can speak (raven familiars can speak).

Here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/sorcererWizard.htm#familiars

Skills
For each skill in which either the master or the familiar has ranks, use either the normal skill ranks for an animal of that type or the master’s skill ranks, whichever are better. In either case, the familiar uses its own ability modifiers. Regardless of a familiar’s total skill modifiers, some skills may remain beyond the familiar’s ability to use.

I must be missing something because I am reading online that Imps are great at combat as far as familiars go. It seems to have great AC, but it has poor BAB and all the forms it can turn into are even worse as far as BAB go. What gives? Or are you supposed to cast Polymorph on it since it is an Outsider?  And if so, is there a guide on Core Outsider types my Imp can be turned into?

Is there a guide for the Imp? His Atlernate Form confuses me.
It is very simple. They have one animal they can turn into, and that's it. It has to be from the list.

Quote
Also when it says his Suggestion SLA DC is charisma based, does this mean they roll their Will save using the base save + Charisma? Or only a charisma check?
No, it means you calculate the DC as half the imps hit dice plus 10 plus the imp's charisma modifier. Since as a familiar, it is considered to have half of your hit dice, it would use that instead. So let's use an example. Let's say you're a 10th level wizard with an imp familiar. Your imp has a charisma of 14. The DC for its Suggestion SLA is 10+5 (half your HD) + 2 (its charisma modifier) = 17

Quote
Could my Imp activate my wands for me?
Only if you take ranks in Use Magic Device (it uses your skill points, so if you take ranks in UMD, it can use them to activate magic items). It cannot cast spells, so it cannot activate wands without UMD.

I've never been all that enamored with Heighten Spell. Craft Wonderous Item can be a good feat, as some of the best and cheapest items are made using it.

Alright so what is the best one (or two) form from the list Imps have available? Raven for flight?

Where does it say the Imp would use my skill check for UMD? And that means I should pump UMD right?

Heighten Spell has always seemed useful for me. Making low level spells work at higher levels in combat. But I can see the appeal of Craft Wonderous Item.

And with all this in mind how does this look?

Human
Binder 1/Wizard 3/Anima Mage 10

H: Improved Initiative
1. Improved Binding
3. Heighten Spell
6: Craft Wand (?)
9: Improved Familiar (Imp)
12: Quicken Spell

Could my Imp activate my wands for me?

Edit: So Imps can use wands... but the check is a DC 20 and Imps do not seem to have UMD or a very high charisma.

Plus change shape and poison. I totally think its worth it personally.

Isn't improved familiar outside of core?

Anyway the reason I want Conjuration is because that has the majority of battlefield control spells. Otherwise I'd go Transmuter. What item creation feat would you take? Wand? Rod?

I can see not specializing since I'd have increased spell slots with binding I suppose.

A bit heavy on the metamagic. Also you're core only right? So no persist and no need for extend since its a cheap rod.  And the arcane archer part I suggested is a dumb idea; forget it.  Conjurer works still just don't ban Evocation.

I thought Evocation was one of the best schools to ban along with Enchantment. Why not ban it? What would you ban instead? Enchantment and Necromancy?

Also I forgot Persist wasn't in core. As for Extend being cheap, 11000 GP seems... a lot. I dunno how generous our GM will be with loot. But I suppose I could just not take it.

So in that case what would you recommend for feats?

H. Improved Initiative
1:Improved Binding.
3: Heighten Spell
6. Spell Focus (Conjuration)?
9: Augment Summoning?
12: Quicken Spell

I'm actually not too knowledgeable on good feats for Wizards. Or when I should take them. Would it be better to leave Heighten Spell for level 9 and Quicken for level 12? And then take Spell Focus and Augment at levels 3 and 6?

Also if Persist Spell -was- allowed, would you simply not take Quicken Spell and go with Persist? Or would you drop Heighten Spell? Or would you do some other combination of feats (from core only + Persist Spell)

I'd do Binder 1 / Wizard 3 / Animal Mage 10 / Arcane Archer 2
1 improved binding
3 quicken
6 Point Blank Shot
9 Precise Shot
12 Weapon Focus
15 Widen Spell

Use Leraje and ricochet shot your spells.

I also like the somewhat simple combination of Savnok and still spell.

So this would be a Touch Attack spell based caster, rather than a Conjurerer? Are Conjurers just not done well by Anima Mage?

Also what would my weapon focus be in?

Is: Binder 1/Wizard (Specialize in Conjuration) 4/Anima Mage 10
H. Improved Initiative
1:Improved Binding.
3: Extend Spell
6. Heighten Spell
9: Quicken Spell
12: Persist Spell

Bad? Too much metamagic?

Wizard is regarded as better than sorcerer in general, for much the reasons you've pointed out (earlier access to higher level spells, and earlier PrC entry). Having the ability to learn all spells instead of a fixed set also sets them ahead, and the bonus feats can be used to pick up more Metamagic to use with Vestige Metamagic (is that the name? I forget).

As discussed with your earlier builds, binders are not as dependent on charisma as casters are on their casting stat. So you can focus mostly on Int, then likely Con and/or Dex, with Charisma as your 3rd or 4th most important stat.

So yeah, wizard entry is definitely stronger, but sorcerers are easier to play. :D

Well isn't the Charisma really important for Vestige ability DCs?

Anyway, I've never actually gotten to high levels where DMs allowed us stat boosting items. If I did go Binder 1/Wizard 3/Anime Mage 10/whatever...

At levels 4,8,12,etc... I'd put my points into Int right?
For items I'd go Int boosting > Con boosting > Charisma boosting? Or do you not actually boost Constitution and just hope your starting stats for it are good?

Also as far as feats go, without flaws would this be any good?

Binder 1/Wizard (Specialize in Conjuration) 4/Anima Mage 10
H. Improved Initiative
1:Improved Binding.
3: Extend Spell
6. Heighten Spell
9: Quicken Spell
12: Persist Spell

I know it is super unoptimized but is: Binder 1/Sorcerer 4/Anima Mage 10 decent enough?

 :twitch

Come on man... I know it's all relative, but full caster (sor) + anima mage (full casting advancement prestige class) with only 1 level of binder is an extremely stong and highly optmized combination. Play whatever you wanna play, your game, your fun, but if your party is really 'fairly unoptimized' as you say in the OP, you might get some strange looks when you use a build like this to its full effect.

If you go this route, I'd suggest focus on buffing / battle field control to help out your party.

Yeah I'd definitely hold back for the most part and focus on battle field control.

Though just for fun, isn't Binder 1/Wizard 3/Anima Mage 10 a better build (if no precocious apprentice access)? It is probably a little harder to boost your DCs since you have to focus on Charisma -and- Intelligence, but you get more spells. And you enter Anima Mage earlier.

This gives you the Soul Binding of a 13th level Binder I think which is 2 vestiges at a time and 6th level vestiges. You also get level 7 spells. All of this at level 15. At level 20 you could have something like:

Binder 2/Sorcerer 8/Anima Mage 10. This gets you three 6th level vestiges, and 9th level spell-casting albeit with only 1 level 9 spell know.

I know there are far better ways to enter the class. Though this entry seems fine for low-op games.

Actually Binder 1/Wizard 3/Anima Mage 10 seems infinitely superior. Though then you have to focus on Charisma/Int. And possibly Constitution. Though the extra spells known and extra spell slots probably is superior to being able to focus on only one stat.

Actually, james what would you recommend as the best entry for Anima Mage? Assuming the divine variant is not allowed.

1 power attack
bb mounted combat
3 ride by attack
4 improved binding
6 spirited charge
8 weapon focus
9 cleave

Focus on Andres. Obviously cc ride stinks but I believe these feats are useful enough in your gaming environment.

What's the idea here?  Multiplying smite damage with a lance and spirited charge?  Assuming that's right, it doesn't really come together until level 6, when you get Spirited Charge, and after you can bind Andras at level 5.
Game starts at level 5 or 6, per the OP in a later post.

Most of your other criticisms aren't limited to a binder mounted charger, but are general to mounted chargers in general. With Expel Vestige, he can trade out his vestige for another for out of combat utility. Of course, he risks being stuck without his main combat boost if he gets drawn into combat unexpectedly after that. But at least he has other options, as compared to a fighter/barbarian mounted charger, etc.

And yeah, I'd assume later you bind Chupoclops for your 2nd vestige for pounce.

There's actually no real room for Expel Vestige on that build it seems.

No id probably use a phrenic whispergnome w magic in the blood and focus totally on Darius what's his names 3rd party binder book and completely focus on sla's, pla 's, and su abilities.  There's some really cool stuff in his material.

I should have clarified any WoTC book lol.

Str then con ~ cha.

Forget tripping.  Do:
1 power attack
bb mounted combat
3 ride by attack
4 improved binding
6 spirited charge
8 weapon focus
9 cleave

Focus on Andres. Obviously cc ride stinks but I believe these feats are useful enough in your gaming environment.

Thanks for the advice.  :)

Yeah mounted combat should probably be useful at the level of optimization my current campaign is at.

Out of curiosity, what would you go for if you had access to any book? Standard charging build?

Hmm so if there a way to do a non-melee Binder using mostly Core (and possibly some ToM) feats? Or is Binder (unless you go Anima Mage) pretty much supposed to be a meleer?

I see. Enlarge Person should be easy enough to get. I'm not sure if I have room for the Extra Rage feat though.

Playing an Orc isn't going to be possible most likely. We're limited to Human, Half-Elf, Elf, Half-Orc, Gnome, Dwarf, Halfling.

Sounds like tripping just really isn't too great. Though without Shocktrooper a charger isn't really possible to make. Gah, melee really is so limited.  >:(

Maybe I should just stick to playing a Sorcerer. With a Cleric and Druid in the party at least I'll be in a tier that can somewhat contribute with them around.
