Gaming Advice / Pathfinder(and 3.5) Telekinetic Maneuver
« on: December 21, 2013, 12:48:44 PM »
Can the creature you target with the combat maneuver be changed from round to round or are you limited to the target you specified when manifesting the power?

The wording of the power seems to indicate "no" but maybe I'm missing something.

This would make the power much less useful than the wizard telekinesis version, and maybe it should be (5th lvl vs 4th) but it doesn't seem like there is a higher level Psion power that would be similar to the wizard version if this is the case.

There are significant differences between a familiar and a psicrystal... One, it always costs a feat to get a crystal, and it is an inanimate object* infused with a piece of your personality, not a fully separate creature, as a familiar is. Additionally, I don't know of any item that can merge with a familiar, and become one unit like the staff I referenced can do...

Thank you for the response, You may be right, but it seems to me that just because its "like a familiar" isn't the best reason to limit it..

*yes I know it can get the ability to move of its own accord, but it must become a psicrystal before it gets that ability.. It certainly starts off inanimate at any rate.

Gaming Advice / Specific pathfinder question:
« on: March 14, 2013, 04:33:52 PM »
In pathfinder when you change forms (for example, via the polymorph spell) your equipment melds with your new form, the relevant rule:

"Unless the new form is humanoid, all gear merges into the form.  Constant bonuses (except AC) remain.  Activation items can't be activated. Material components are not accessible while merged into the form."

As a psion you can get a psicrystal, the question is, will it merge with your changed form and still grant bonuses? Will it still be able to maintain a psionic focus for you if you have psicrystal containment?

P.S.
If its a question of it being equipment or not there is a staff that you can lock your psicrystal into so that it could be treated as equipment also... Referenced here:

Gaming Advice / Fixing the thrallherd
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:32:15 AM »
I'm just wondering if anyone has come up with any ideas to fix the thrall herd prc.  That is, it's pretty much universally agreed that the thrall ability is completely broken, so is there a way to rebalance the prestige class without it or reduce its power?

My first thought was to delete it altogether, and simply give back the manifester level that you give up for the ability.  While this certainly rebalances, I'm afraid that may go too far and the flavor of the class I'd certainly lost.  While keeping the ML is decent, you don't really gain a lot of other benefit out of the thrallherd prc beyond a few buffs to certain powers that every psion can get... Granted those buffs are good, but it doesn't really establish a unique prc when those powers are things that a normal Psion can still do, but with more difficulty.

Any ideas, thoughts, or ramblings on the subject are greatly appreciated as I'm looking to propose options to my dm.

I wonder how many of the republican convention goers actually believe every word of that article. lol

well since you invoked Godwin's law can I invoke Gopnik's ammendment to said law?

Gopnik's Amendment', he argues that comparisons to the Nazis is justified if the individual or association embrace a world-view that contains the three characteristics of nationalism, militarism, and hatred of otherness

With respect to the current Republican party, the comparison seems pretty appropriate.

Their stance for militarism and nationalism is pretty well established.  And I'd say the current vitriol against Obama pretty much establishes their "hatred of otherness"

The Republican National Convention was a scripted circus.  All of us there should have been in clown suits as it would have been more appropriate to the venue as it played out.

We all hear politics is dirty.  We may even think politics is dirty.  Having been at this sham of a convention I KNOW politics is dirty.

I hope the Democrats have more of a real delegate process than I saw at the RNC though I sadly doubt it.

Oh yeah, just when you thought they couldn't get any worse, what they did with Ron Paul and the delegates was low, even for Republicans.

Hate, I'm sorry to say, plays well with voters.

If you want to get political power one way to do it is to hate on a minority group.  That way the majority will generally back you because they fear or mistrust those evil minorities.  Its been working for a long time now.  it worked for Hitler and it works for republicans.  In fact many of the political tactics the republicans use echo the techniques employed by the Nazis:

-Controlling Mass media (as in fox news)
-Using Film and Cinema (as in "Obama's america")
-Mythologizing the party (as in republicans are the only true patriots)
-Demonizing Political opposition (Obama is Satan or ironically, Hitler)
-Exploiting myth, and religion (As in Romney is Jesus's choice)
-Exploiting Nationalism (As in if you want your country to do better vote Romney)
-The Big lie (As, "you might be rich one day so you should support us so your taxes aren't terrible when you are")

All of the above were propaganda techniques employed by the Nazis and now the republican party.

I'm not saying the Dems don't do it too, but they seem far less egregious about it.

I dunno if anyone else seen this but I almost busted out laughing at work reading this article, it took a lot to hold it in, particularly at the part at the end about the pillow:

He's saying that she's an animal b/c she works for CNN.  This is not a race issue. :tongue
Or maybe because its a fact. Humans ARE animals, after all.  :P
uhh yeah, especially black humans right?

Wrong.

lets not get started with this wrong-thinking idea again.  Humans have sapience, which means they are somewhat different than all other animals.

And more-so, I think even if the person only meant it because she was a CNN employee, its still degrading to anyone to be called an animal.  I think Republicans are wrong about a lot of things, but I wouldn't call them animals.  Evil maybe, but not animals.
It was a joke. But it is an indisputable fact that scientifically, humans are animals. Get offended all you want.
Most of the stuff republicans do is offensive.  I just don't like the implication that anyone they disagree with is an animal.

Even if we use your logic, that would mean that everyone is an animal, so I'm assuming everyone should be fed that way.

We may be classified as animal, but its offensive to say we are the same as the ones fed from the floor, hows that?

If any other countries government had the numbers our congress did they'd be in the middle of bloody revolution by now,

Isn't that what voting is supposed to be?  isn't casting our vote supposed to be the means by which we re-make the government without the bloody part?

Honestly I think what the populace should do is vote everyone in congress out down to the last one and put independents in for a term.  I would venture to guess that they'd get a lot more shit done that would be better for the country.

My friend saw a quote running around Facebook that went something like:

"If your a Republican you might not be a racist, but if your a racist your probably a Republican."

Seems right to me

Heh ... I go on ~vacation and all (adj-)politics breaks loose.

Retitled thread again.  Ron Paul's gonna play nice nice.

Romney went off message , and hinted toward the birthers.
http://nation.foxnews.com/mitt-romney/2012/08/24/romney-no-one-has-ever-asked-see-my-birth-certificate

Dude  :pout

Why is it that the poll says the comment is "inspiring"??   :banghead

Do we really have to go there YET again???

Either Romney is too much of a coward to stand up to the birthers and tell them they're wrong, or he's so stupid he actually believes them.

This is just a bunch of racist bullshit, and yet another reason I can't support the republicans (as if I needed another).

Yes, Governer Romney, no-ones asked you for your birth certificate, and don't you think there is a problem with that?  I'm not sure I like a country where, if your white, everyone automatically assumes your native, but if your anything else, you better make sure you can prove you deserve to be here.

What a jackass.

if you have your heart set on sniper I guess there's no changing that, but I guess what I'm trying to get across is you can do powerful arcane things and not have to be a wizard.

Your focusing on the wizard aspect of things and a wizard is fine, but a bard may be able to do everything your wanting and, oh by the way he can cast spells as a performance, masking things.  A Psion can suppress all obvious manifestation of his powers.  Whereas if your a wizard as soon as you cast a spell, anyone with Spellcraft will know that you are an arcane caster.

I'm just trying to get across that a bard or Psion is a better way to get to do what you want to do within the limits of your game world. AND your gonna be contributing different things to the party that the other characters can't do.  Oh and btw they both get lots of skill points too.

In the end, go with what you're happy with, you expressed concern about duplicating the other party members earlier, I'm just warning you that you will, if you choose this build.  Don't be surprised when you begin to feel like a 5th wheel.

On improved initiative: one of the best things a wizard can get is warning +eager enchantments on his weapon, whatever it may be.  Those enchantments may take up valuable +1 spots on a weapon that a warrior carries, but for a wizard you rarely actually use your weapon to fight things.
together they provide a +7 bonus to initiative, that, added together with your dex and nerveskitter should get you around a +15 bonus to initiative.  Sure you can take imp initiative,  and make that a +19-20 but is it really necessary?  most monsters will have something like a +7 to initiative at that level, max, and most clerics are gonna be worse than that.  Even if they have improved init your still beating them around 70% of the time you can use a feat to make that 90% but trust us when we tell you, there are better things to do with your feats than a mere 20% bonus to initiative.

17
(click to show/hide)
+1 for all of this, I don't know why all the handbook writers are in love with improved init, esp when warning and eager are out there that pretty much make up for it and you have a million better feats to take.  Its not that improved init sucks, its that there's just so much better out there.  Also go conjurer ,not transmuter, for abrupt jaunt if you've got your heart set on specializing.  And btw conjuration is a better domain, but its a secret   ;)

18
I think I'm in love with the flavor of a skillmonkey, sneaky caster.  spellthief/transmuter for some prefight buffing/spellwarp sniper.  The other ideas mentioned (incantatrix, beguiler, and mindbender have all been mentioned by players applying to the game, and I don't want to compete with a similar build.

My advice is to fall out of love with the spellthief/transmuter build for a lot of reasons.  Number one, your casting progression  suffers, which means you just won't be as powerful stacked up against an incantatrix at all,  and number two you'll actually have to hit spellcasters to use the spell-steal ability.  Which, since this is a more powerful campaign may not happen all that often.   Esp considering that you won't have the best BAB in the world and clerics (your main opponent it seems) can buff AC-even touch ac...

Secondarily, if someones playing an incantatrix, you will be "competing"  with a similar build as the incantatrix will have everything you can do, only she'll be able to do it better and sooner.  Hell, just a
straight up conjurer god-wizard 7 with abrubt jaunt is strictly better than spellthief/trans/swpsniper.

I'm not telling you this to be mean, I just want you to be prepared that you are choosing a sub-optimal build if you go this route, and the Incantatrix will easily outshine you in every way.

Your better off going for psionics, or bard, or warlock.  Otherwise I'm afraid you actually WILL be doing the same thing that everyone else is, only they'll be doing it better.  I still say psionics is strictly best, but I've recently become a believer in bards... :D

Gods angry at the republicans:

http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/08/23/storm-isaac-idINL6E8JN1DQ20120823

Aren't they supposed to be the "pro god party?"  maybe god really is a woman after all.

20
when I saw this post, I thought SCM was the best option, but seeing as you need to be quiet about your abilities I think Psion is your best bet

Psions have a rule that they can supress their manifestation by making a concentration check.  Also they already (effectively) have eschew materials, silent/still spell metamagic feats built into what they do...  these things are important when your going to be on the lamb.

if race choice doesn't really matter, be a hengeyokai or similar shapeshifter race so that you have options to get away in a hurry.  nothing like turning into a sparrow and flying out of there when the going gets rough.    The other plus of that kind of a race plus Psionics is that you can manifest while your in sparrow form, so you don't lose your abilities.

read over the Psionics handbooks here and enjoy.

if anything is allowed: telepath5/thrallherd2 is strictly the most powerful build you can get, bar none, because you'll have another level 6 character right along with you(one that you don't mind dying I might add-because there's no big drawback for a Thrall)

The two ways you should go with skills, the social, diplomatic way or the hide/move silently way.
I tend to think the diplomatic way is stronger with a Telepath build, but often DMs don't allow diplomancers in their games.  Just remember that there are ways to sneak out of things, and there are ways to socialize out of things, but neither works all the time.
