D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / [Dragonmech]Riftwalker entry
« on: October 30, 2022, 06:40:44 AM »
I'm hoping to get a couple of suggestions on putting together a Riftwalker/Nar Demonbinder/Ultimate Magus caster level focused build. The Riftwalker is a 10 level class granting up to eighth level spells, and abilities largely involving sensing rifts and teleportation. Neither class gives much of a spell list, and the combination is Int/Cha MAD, but there is a bit of intentional hamstringing in play. The character will be largely in the background, contributing summoning/planar ally, party transport, and the occasional inimical Blasphemy. I'm not planning on making much use of the Riftwalker class abilities, and would be cool with prestiging out after a single level.

The entry requirements are a little weird, but the class can be entered at 4th level without early entry, or 3rd with.

Skills: Knowledge (the planes) 5 ranks, Search 5 ranks, Spot 5 ranks, Survival 5 ranks
Spellcasting: Ability to cast 2nd-level spells or use ki strike (magic)

There isn't much in the way of single class entry, that I can see. A UA generic spellcaster works, for one, but I was hoping to avoid that. My current thought is to use Master Spellthief paired with a level of Planar Ranger on a human with 16 Int (necessary to get several cross class skills). Please note that for the purposes of the game in which this character will participate the feat Precocious Apprentice is considered to allow early entry. I'm writing this with the initial assumption of  flaws and use of Otyugh Hole for Iron Will, although since there are several open feat slots there is an eye towards potentially eliminating that.

Also, both spell progressions max out at character level 14 (X2/Riftwalker4/Nar Demonbinder1/Ultimate Magus 7) so I'm unsure what a good cap might consist of. I could potentially see switching Ultimate Magus for either Soulcaster or Cerebmancer, or if nothing else dropping all pretense of offense and combining Riftwalker with Apostle of Peace.

Any suggestions on entry or potential applications are appreciated.

I read the Soulbound vestige ability as essentially opening the soul chakra, although that of course would make things too easy ;) . If it doesn't open the soul chakra, I suppose a decent choice would be binding a vestige, and allocating 2 essentia to Illithid Mask instead.

The main options seem to either be getting webs from one of a couple of ways, or adding additional attacks (slam, claws, tentacles) and taking advantage of Multiattack.

Are there any homebrew incarnum feats that are particularly awesome? It seemed like the blemish that granted 1 power point would be useful with psycarnum infusion with such a feat.

I'm thinking:
Vestige: Atlach-Nacha
Soulbind: Beholder Shroud
unbound Soulmelds: Keeneye Lenses (choice from race), Delver Greaves, Neothelid Gorget
Additional Blemishs: Heretical Alien-Knight X 2 (Martial Study: Disable Chakra,  Martial Stance: Cerulean Surge*), Tentacular Scion
Essentia: 6

And basically cast webs from underground, followed by antimagic rays and disabling item slots
*Essential cut could use a low level stance, and Cerulean Surge is nicely generic enough to serve well.

Jackinthegreen, I went with the Trap Expert ACF so as to be able to keep Search/DD ranks up easily. I suppose it's a wash either way. I'm looking for suggestions on the remaining levels, and upon realizing I mixed up the Prestige Paladin's reqs changed the stub around to fit. The Serenity feat is there to get around the dumping of Charisma. What other domain would be the best choice?

As for Planar Touchstone use, I think Chameleon builds can put it to better use. This is more about having lots of choices for the swift action each round and zipping around.

It's still a little rough, but I'd love some suggestions, particularly in terms of what else to shove in, and order to do so. Any source is fine.

Question: Prestige Paladin requires the ability to cast Protection from Evil as a divine spell. Does preparing it via Sword of the Arcane Order qualify, since it's in a divine slot?

Human Cloistered Cleric 1/Mystic Ranger 10/Scout 3/Prestige Paladin 2

ACF: Arcane Hunter, Trap Expert, Wildshape, Spell Reflection (will get Ring of Evasion), Crowd Walker, Voice of the City
Domains: Travel Devotion, Knowledge, open

Feats: (2 flaws taken)
B open
1 Mounted Combat
3 open
6 Natural Spell
9 Sword of the Arcane Order
12 Dragon Wild Shape (shadow dragon predominately)
15 Battle Blessing
18 Minor Shapeshift

DCFS used 3 times, replacing level 1, 3 feat and two flaws)
Swift Hunter
Fly-by attack
serenity
Improved Skirmish

Items of note: Ring of Evasion
Skills of note: 8 ranks of Spellcraft, 15 ranks of Knowledge (Nature)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Introduce Yourself / Obligatory new poster thread

I like reading about games, but don't play much of anything. I would like to read about games on this board, and hope that this post is sufficient to allow me to do so.
