[Arhosa] Arhosa PbP / Re: The Slaves of Easternham
« on: March 20, 2024, 08:02:06 AM »
Under the cloak of night, a caravan wound its way through the dense, darkened woods, the chatter of the caravan's guards and owners easily audible to Adziil. Flanking the procession were Biyou, scales glinting dimly under the faint glow of the moons. Warriors, clad in leather and metal armor, weapons at the ready, their snouts sniffing the air and eyes peering into the dark even as they chatted. Arcanists, adorned with robes etched with mystic symbols, sat atop the wagons and kept their own vigilance, although less so than that of their lower-caste servants.

As Adziil snuck forward, a rustle in the underbrush set the caravan twitching. But it was only a false alarm — a small creature, startled by the caravan’s passage. The Biyou resumed their march, the caravan moving forward, whatever it was carrying hidden under a thick canvas wrap over the backs of the two wains.

Cleaned up a little bit, especially The Whites of Their Eyes. Also updated the skills to the modern Arhosan setup.

As night falls, the forest around you seems to come alive with mystery. The canopy above is so thick that not even the moon’s glow penetrates the darkness that envelops your group. As you prepare your evening's encampment, the quiet of the night is pierced by the distant sound of conversations. The low murmur of voices is too faint to discern the words but clear enough to tell there are quite a few talking. You are still a ways from Fracha or where you expect to encounter the caravan of slaves, even if it swung north. Given you've heard them and they, presumably, haven't heard you, you have a moment to confer. Of course, talking might alert them to your presence.

Anyone wishing to talk out loud should make a Stealth check.

The Kier perks her ears in response to the Flonha's request, baring her teeth in what could be called a grin. It's probably best to take that as confirmation she's very good at hunting.

The giantess looked down at the Biyou. "Perhaps, when you have rescued those in need of help. There are many who need assistance out there beyond the lands that we of Setras Ra can control. It is not a kind world to the weak."

Maiden of the Coins answered. "We bring them here, to help them recover. That is why Easternham exists, after all. If they recover, they are free to leave and take up what positions they will in society, whether rescuing their own, living in Setras Ra, or roaming. We are not their jailors, but their healers."

You'll be traveling overland, which means the wonderful risk of random encounters. You'll need to decide traveling order, guards at night, etc.

Isigqila shrugged, once more languid in his person. "I do what I can for folks who'll end up dead if they don't end up here. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm going to have to move to a new location. Who knows, maybe I can get sent over to Biyan, where everyone's a bit more civilized than down in Pybyr Vestana. No dust, no desert, green fields... I'd like it."

Adawolf looked across at Promise Keeper. Or rather, looked up. Even at the Kier's imposing size in normal company, she was still a child compared to the Llethu. And then she gave one slow nod, without ever taking her eyes off of the giant's.

@the Bluez:

Adawolf is exactly who Maiden of the Coins says she is - an expert tracker who works for Setras Ra.

Isigqila watched Gwaedwen's actions with no small amount of pity visible on his face. The way in which she reacted to the Llethu presence in the room had been quite telling. His face twisted a little when she asked about his escape, and some of the sympathy that had been visible disappeared. "Well, I knew I'd have to tell the story in public sooner or later." He groaned, then continued. "My escape wasn't from the slavers or the caravan, it was from Fracha. I nose, or after this escapade nosed, around Fracha for the fine lady standing behind me, doing what I can to help those in need. Apparently I'd been building up a little bit of a reputation, and one of the Living Sun Wardens decided I was in need of a right proper kicking. Too much putting myself in places I shouldn't be, too much seeming like a criminal casing the joint for robberies. It didn't help that a fair number of the folks that I spoke to got attacked. Us trying to free the slaves rather than steal, but the Wardens don't know that. And would only try to kill me more if they did. Saving grace was I saw them coming before they saw me going, and I got out of town as quickly as I could. Came back here with the news, and Maiden of the Coins decided she would employ a few folks to disrupt matters, our normal team not being up to battering down a clan of Llethu. Or willing to take the risk. So I really don't have the information you want. Sorry lass."

Isigqila chuckled at the questions. "I'm going to charge you ten gold a piece for all three of those. I just told you, at best I last saw the caravan two weeks ago, and it's been longer than that, and they could easily have met up with extra Llethu the moment it left Fracha. Nor do I have any idea of the inner workings of a Llethu tribe, or the mental state of slaves off in the savage lands. The large lady standing behind me is paying you to go answer those questions yourself. And you're paying me because you asked them instead of doing what you've been engaged to do."

The conversations between the various sundries gathered together were interrupted by the arrival of two people – one a Flonha, presumably Isigqila, and the other a giant of a woman – quite literally, for she was a Llethu, taller even than Promise Keeper, and dressed in stately robes announcing her ties to Accordance of Thought.

No doubt she was the one who was bankrolling this expedition. A fact that became obvious a moment later when she started to speak. “Greetings all, I am Maiden of the Coins. I am here for two purposes – the first is to guarantee the terms offered by Accordance of Thought. The second is to proffer help if you wish it. Firstly, we, as supporters of the few free Flonha left in Arhosa, would like those slaves who can be freed to be returned here, where they can be rehabilitated. You will each receive a healthy payment per head that is rescued. Those who have captured these Flonha and seek to trade them to our less-refined cousins can be disposed of as you see fit, although slavers who are brought back alive to serve justice are worth more than those who are slain without fit proof of their oppression.”

Turning towards the back of the room, the door through which she had entered, Maiden of the Coins gestured. Through the opening came an impressively-built Kier, thick muscles rippling across her hunched shoulders, her eyes bright and her nose twitching as she scented the air. “This is Adawolf. She and her tribe are in service to Setras Ra, scouting the approaches to the city for incursions by our savage brethren in Llethome. Should you desire it, she can be detached to serve as a tracker and scout. If so, I would recommend listening to what she discovers.”

Stepping back, Maiden of the Coins made it clear she had finished speaking. Into her place at the front of the room strode Isigqila, his movements languid and relaxed. Whatever his former upbringing, it appeared to have been washed away by elegant manners and insouciance. Nor did his attire speak to a recently freed slave’s level of wealth. “As with most slaving caravans, this one is being run from Fracha by the Living Sun Wardens. They gather the slaves in raids, or they purchase them from less scrupulous folks, or take on indentured servants and criminals and sell their labour. Doesn’t matter to them. Then, they auction them off to the highest bidder in the markets. This time around, Hannhangnefedd’s Children sent an envoy, purchasing every single Flonha in the markets and a few other types who might be useful. Or might be nothing more than fodder for the sacrifice. With that crowd, it could be either. The caravan left two weeks ago, and should be about halfway from Fracha to Llethome, where it’s going to be met by a large cadre of Hannhangnefedd’s Children. Which puts you under a bit of stress.” He waved a lazy hand towards a side table that had folded papers atop it. “Those are maps of the rough route I’d expect them to take. The caravan is guarded by Biyou, Pybyr, and Llethu, although I doubt the two groups are getting along that well. It’s also a part of Arhosa that’s… not exactly known for its civilization. So you might find a fair few creatures who make a Llethu like yours look like a child’s plaything.”

Isigqila glanced around the room. “Now’s the time for questions, if you have any. I’ll charge you for foolish ones, though. One free tip, though – I’m not coming with you. You’re either on your own or with Adawolf over there. Forests and angry Llethu aren’t my place in the world.”

[Arhosa] Arhosa PbP / The Slaves of Easternham

Whether they be playthings of the Llethu, used as healers in the fighting pits of Fracha by the Living Sun Wardens, or traded amongst the Biyou arcanists, Flonha are viewed as little more than portable healing spells, not as the living and vibrant beings that they should be.

Only in a few parts of Arhosa is such a view of the Flonha upended. One of those places is Setras Ra, former capital of the Arhosan Empire, where the enlightened views that once made the Empire a bastion of progress have still clung to life. And in the eastern hinterlands of the capital is a very special village: Easternham. From the outside it seems little different from those other farming villages that ring the former capital, but nothing could be further from the truth. For Easternham is a hospice, supported by Accordance of Thought, the largest and most power of the ruling Llethu clans of Setras Ra.

All too often, Flonha who find their way to Easternham are the broken and the battered, brought low by the hand that life has dealt them, in need of watching over as much as healing. For healers who have been so damaged know a great many ways to wound themselves and others. But others are the resilient, the survivors, having fought their way through the worst that the world can throw at them and come out the other side hardened but unbroken.

One of those survivors has brought word of a caravan of Flonha slaves, soon to be transported from the city of Fracha in the north of Pybyr Vestana across to Llethome, where they are traded with the savage giants of that land. With that in mind, Accordance of Thought has sponsored a group of adventurers to see if the Flonha captives can be recovered.

Isigqila, a name meaning “slave” in the language of Pybyr, has offered to tell you all that he knows in regards to the potential journey of the caravan, but warns that his escape was only by the skin of his teeth, and the slavers may well have changed plans.

He has agreed to meet you in Easternham, at a building settled on the outskirts of the village so that non-Flonha have a place to visit well away from the traumatized inhabitants.
