I thought persisting with DMM needs 7 turn attempts per spell? For 6 spells that would be 42 attempts or am I missing something?

First off, I wasn't trying to bash you. The "monstrously incompetent" referred to the build you presented, as a 7th level tank, not to yourself!

No offense taken. :)

I'll try to come up with a more sensefull build with full caster level. Probably it will be a rather standard solution (Cloistered Cleric, Church Inquisitor, Divine Oracle, Contemplative). With persisting some stuff that should be manageable if enough turn attempts are available. But thanks for the insights so far.

Actually I read through that handbook. Probably I arranged the pieces in the wrong way. Righteous Might, Dinve Power and such buffs are known, I just thought they were good but at some point not that good anymore by themselves (monsters getting larger and stronger with higher levels or magic becomming more dominant). Upgrading the meelee abilities with smiting and some fighter feats looked good to me.
I guess I'm gonna read that handbook again.  :)

Min/Max 3.x / Re: Cleric blocking it with the chest, worth it?

Alright, I see I am very far off track. Maybe I got the basics of the game wrong. Is it actually viable to have a character build focussing more on survivability or can any caster just do that anyway (for example by using divination to get data on the coming encounters and buffing himself up)? I know casters usually beat non-casters easily, so I opted to get as much caster level into the build as possible. Seems, full spell progression is the way to go.  Do you recommend making a cleric that has some more meelee abilities through feats and class features or does a high level cleric just have a spell for all of these and laughs at the other character?

If these questions seem to noobish or monstrously incompetent feel free to just close the thread.

I tried to make a supporting wizard instead of a blaster. Spells like web and glitterdust are fun and still powerful. This easily gets my the attention of the evil dudes and certainly the buffers are not really buffing (the two just seem to be internally bound on one playing style, i try to show them other ways). And sometimes a wizard is just a wizard and gets shot or smashed. :)

Hello everyone,

since my current character (normal wizard of low level) will probably die soon as he gets focussed a lot i am already planning for the next character. Since two players in the group are not really using the potential of their paladin and dragon shaman but rather go charge/smash-wise into fights i thought i could build a versatile tank. So whatever gets thrown at the group and downs the others, my guy stays standing and heals the party again or smacks the monster.

I wanted to go for a martial but versatile cleric, being rather tanky and able to fight in meelee while still cast a lot of spells. I tried to get a lot of bonuses in without completely relying on spells so i can save some work and time at the gaming table. All books are ok, except ToB or very campaign -specific stuff. No psionics, flaws or bad characters (Paladin in the group). Current group level is 7, equipment options are slightly limited.

Here is the build :
(click to show/hide)

As you can see, there are some levels missing. Contemplative seems to fit well, prestige paladin 3 would make him immune to fear, but there are probably other good options. The saves are ok with divine grace, the casting is alright as well as the armor. Immunities are above average, too. Evasion in all armour is in. Still i have a feeling that the guys is not tanky enough. SR is still missing as well as something like damage reduction , resistances and good or permanent healing capabilities. Also the ordained champion's smite, he devotion feats and the persisting all need turn undead attempts. Serenity uses Wis for that but i still need more somehow. Getting the fire domain through contemplative and extra turning was an idea, but i am not sure if that works.

I am also not sure if the concept makes sense. Should i maybe just go Cleric 20 and am already better than any more meelee focussed builds ? Is trying to be tanky as a cleric a bad idea ? I like versatile chars a lot but of course i might be wanting too much. And since i am not very experienced with characters above level 14 ( we rarely crossed that line) i am not sure if all the improvements i tried to get into the build are actually worth it or if any basic arcane caster just blasts me away with his first spell. Some general insight from the more experienced people would be appreciated ; either on how to improve the build or how to get the concept done properly.

Cheers,
Mandulis

Even a tough fighter has to admit that an Ettin is much easier to handle with some glitterdust and spiders. :) Being a focussed specialist wizard and giving up three schools also helps as ist sounds rather harsh, but actually isn't. I think I will have a lot of fun with this unsuspicious dude.

Today our group met. I ended up playing a normal human conjurer (wizard 5, malconvoker 1) and had a lot of fun. I almost never used direct damage spells and still had a lot of fun. All summoned monsters also seemed rather harmless to the others, so that should work out as well.

Thanks for all the input.  :D

I really dig the cloudy conjuration.  It should be fairly funny to scale that up from "I am a crazy mage still doing the old *poof* thing with each spell" to actually doing fun stuff with it. I'll give that a try. Maybe I am allowed to trade in some class features of the wizard. The PHB or the Spell Compendium should offer some nice spells which by themselves don't do much, but create a lot of smoke. Thanks for all the input.

Thanks for the input. A bard might actually work. I think the problem, as Hans-E pointed out, is that unusual builds are invoke the thought of "That sounds complex, that must be cheesy!". The point might be that I play differently with my character. I like to explore its possibilities. A rogue is more for me than just a sneak-attacker. I am not sure, but that might be a reason why I'm getting these restrictions. :)

Anyway, I'll give the bard a thought. But the aristocrat is also rather cool. Nobody expects that but I guess I would have to play with his hired muscle instead of him.

Hi everyone,

today I got an unusual challenge for anyone who is interested. I am looking for ideas to create an extremely unsuspicious character. He should look like a weak person not able to do much but still possess enough hidden capability (either through creative play or several minor abilities that stack and create useful effects) to be useful to the party and fun to play. Now comes the hard bit, he must not only look unsuspicious to other NPCs and creatures of the world but also to the other players in my group when they look at his character sheet.

Why do I have this strange idea?
Simple, somehow I am not allowed to play a lot of stuff as supposedely I always play cheesy stuff. My last character was already a simple barbarian level three with a spiked chain getting people of their feet. I was urged to drop that one. Although someone in the group already had a warlock, I am not allowed to get one ( he's too tough) and my idea of a factotum/chameleon to fill any gap that arises, so everybody can play whatever they want, was also rejected. Since I'm firend with all the guys in the group for over 10 years just getting another group isn't really an option. So how could I create a character that looks like it can not do anything right, but still can do so to some extend?

We use all books, except the ToB, Boed, BovD and campaign books like Eberron. Also , as you can guess, any character build with more than three classes is going to be called powerplay. Combos for endless damage or riding lvl 16 dinosaurs at level four are also out of the qustion. I guess, you can already see my dilemma. Currently the group is at level five (I've had a break for some time as I was abroad.) It consists of a Kenku rogue, a dragon shaman, a human paladin and a shape shifting druid (yes I know, some stuff in there is a lot tougher than what is allowed for me, but hey, a challenge can be fun).

I already found Dr. Jack Daniels in the gitpg-forum, but I am not sure if that goes well as a PC. Besides, it requires a mongrel. But I like the basic concept (he is a commoner, lowest of the lowest, but still has several uses).

So I hope some ideas come up here and I am looking forward to create some crazy builds from them.

Introduce Yourself / I hope my GM won't find me here...
« on: August 29, 2012, 04:27:36 AM »
Hello everyone,
after reading this forum (and the old one) for several years and greatly enjoying its content, I finally came to the point of having some questions simple reading cannot solve. So I decided to join your illustrous round of adventurers and discuss a bit with the people around here.

Since my GM won't be on this forum (certainly on most German ones I know he found me constantly), I hope I can write a bit more freely.  :P

I am a calm dude and although a bit crazy we should get along just fine.
