D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Review: The Path of War

A feat that you left out of your review, surprising me, was Martial Power.

Quote
Martial Power [Combat]
You are able to instinctively call upon reserves of untapped power within yourself to defend yourself.
Prerequisites: Constitution 13, knowledge of at least one maneuver or stance.
Benefit: You can choose to take a –1 penalty on attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain 2 temporary hit points. This bonus is increased by half (50%) when you are using a shield of any kind. When your base attack bonus reaches +3 and every +2 thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the temporary hit point bonus increases by 2. You can only choose to use this feat when you declare that you are making an attack or a full-attack action with a melee weapon, or when you are initiating a maneuver. The penalty to attack rolls and temporary hit points gained from use of this feat last until the start of your next turn.

Admittedly, all of that is a little underwhelming. It's basically combat expertise, except you get temporary hitpoints instead of an increase to AC. While I do prefer the temp HP because it's guaranteed to absorb some damage for me if someone hits and get more agency over the bonus I get by using a shield (even a buckler!), it does have that extra prerequisite of needing to know a maneuver or stance.

So why do I like it so much? This.
Quote
Special: Martial Power can be used in place of Combat Expertise to qualify for a feat, prestige class, or other special ability. You can take both this feat and Combat Expertise.
[The Rock] FINALLY! We don't need 13 int for combat maneuvers anymore. [/The Rock]

Now all we need to do is convert this into line-graphs (i.e. "CR vs. Average Saving Throws") to make it easier to interpret. Also, to throw in Flat-Footed AC, DR, and energy resistances for completeness
With the tabs on the bottom you can select to see resistance, which shows all the energy resistances and immunities. There isn't a Flat-Footed AC or DR section, though.

Is this just Bestiary 1, or all 3 (4?) Bestiaries that have been published so far?

He's leaving because his family is moving as they want to get out of the city and his wife is about to start law school.

5
I give you all the Natural Alchemist (Thuvian Alchemist), it's the wizard PrC disguised as an Alchemist PrC.

6
I like that the toothed space-worm has a battleship breath attack.

7
Saw the thread on GitP about this one, holy shit this is a stupid feat.

How did Paizo ever compete with 4E again?
Because they made their product essentially free to play and enjoy.

There are some other streams I'm aware of

GetDaved and Whycalibur
Rev3Games
Roosterteeth

Not all of them are as famous as others, but they're doing those things.

Can I get a link to where exactly this is from. I would love to be able to show this to a friend, directly from the source. But yeah, that's... not the most encouraging thing to hear.

...

There was the equivalent of a player death because you guys weren't willing to miss a ship in order to break him out of prison because of the risk of joining of slave army?  :twitch

Isn't the correct answer to get everyone arrested, join the slave army and lead the Mamluk Revolt?

Yeah, go ahead. I don't have any fierce love for this character. It was just something I came up with to have some fun.

This was already brought to my attention at giantitp, and there was much popcorn-grabbing and laughing all around. As someone brought up, this will be a strategy guide written by the people who claimed in Ultimate Magic that burning hands was the best level 1 AOE spell available, specifically saying that it was better than sleep.

Taking more time to read the description:

"picking a theme (like archer, beserker, knight, pyromancer)"
Do you mean classes, because 2 of those are just a barbarian and cavalier and the first one is 7 different characters?

"Tips for making an effective and fun character to play whether exploring the world or in the middle of combat."
As I said in the other thread, this will at least be interesting in terms of learning how the developers think about the game and character creation.

"Guidelines to help you navigate every aspect of the game, from dungeon exploration to combat to venturing into the wilderness."
This should actually be moderately useful. I'll at least have a look at the book for this. I haven't been playing D&D all that long (<4 years now), so this better have something I haven't yet learned in it.

"Comprehensive guide to complex Pathfinder RPG rules systems like combat maneuvers, attacks of opportunity, action types, and modifier stacking."
:twitch Those things are not complex, unless you're trying to make the argument that the entire combat system is overly complicated and needs to be completely rebuilt from the ground up.

"Tips on getting the most utility out of spell selection and tactical suggestions for commonly cast spells."
Judging by precedent, this is going to be amazing.  :D

At this point, all I can say is that I am pretty sure that the scores are correct. I believe that it was a 25 point buy, but it's been so long since I looked at this character sheet that I'm no longer sure how I was filling out that form to represent inherent/level up bonuses and I can't check it anymore.

It might be tier 1, but I'm not sure. He's making a lot of skill checks to use divine spells, through items, which will cost a lot of money, eating into one of the advantages of casters (less money needed for gear).
By that logic the Wizard isn't a Tier 1 either.

As for skill checks, that is really not a problem. Sorcerers are charisma based (UMD is a Cha skill), have UMD as a class skill, they get to add half their class levels to their UMD, and a feat (Divine Deception, Skill Focus, Magical Aptitude?) or two can easily finish it off.
fair enough. I'm just not sure that it pushes them past tier two into tier 1. Having your expanded power based on the magical items you can acquire (it's not like they can make the scrolls/wands) means that your power is similar to a fighter in some regard. I would also add that gaining access to the arcane spell list as a divine caster is more of a boost than gaining access to the divine spells list as an arcane caster.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that it's just going to force the sorcerer to cast cure spells all the time :P

Uh...long story short, after a single session of which I sat out for 3/4 of it waiting to be introduced, DM dropped me from the game.  When I asked him why, he couldn't remember, but figured it "must have been for a good reason."
I refuse to believe that there are actually people who would do this. It sounds like something the heel in a comedy movie would say.

But to your larger question, I'm not really sure if there is much of a way to build a character in a way that isn't save-or-lose or doing martial damage. I'll even go on to say that martial damage can be paired down into either archer or crit-fishing, too.

Theres... being a bard/cleric/etc. and super-buffing your allies I guess. I do know that there are some decent blasty effects in PF at low levels (snowball comes to mind), but that's not exactly enough to be a mailman.

Oh, and the topic of FAQ rulings and class+race combinations: Half-Elves/Orcs now qualify for all human and elf/orc feats, traits, archetypes, etc.'

AKA you can now play a half-orc scarred witch doctor

I'm helping over there, and already getting annoyed at the existence of Aasimar. It's probably only going to get worse as the game goes along. Them and humans, but humans probably don't annoy me as much because I can't think of any class that they're the best at like Aasimar are with clerics.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Tome of Battle just got banned (rant ... ish)

I've been trying to "educate" the wizard player but he is a bit hardheaded. I can't teach by example because I lack the skill to play a good spellcaster.

I was indeed tempted to go übercharger, Warlock, BFC-wizard, Hood or whatever. But I feel no need to escalate this thing.

Indeed, I believe your claim that you lack the skill to play a good spellcaster to be false, if you understand the benefit of BFC. Use any Tier 1 class and just use general support stuff and if Blasty McSpam pays attention, he may notice how much more powerful the Wizard/Cleric/Druid who uses support and utility Spells, as opposed to blasting. Keep a nuke in your pocket for emergencies.
You'd be surprised. I've seen one player who has

 - played for years
 - played with others who played casters in front of them
 - been told that haste does more damage than fireball (and explained why this was the case)

And still believes that the bard spell list is bad because "it doesn't have any spells that do damage on it."

Time to build a Warlock.

Counter Monkey – Vampire: Spoony’s Jyhad

Did someone say Mad Bomber?

Role up a core only druid.

Clear everything before use.

Make the party beg for your tob character again.

There are all terribad suggestions. You can't prove your point to the other players by making other martial characters that do crazy damage or anything else that overtly takes over the game. By doing that, all you would prove is that you like to build overpowered characters, or that your an immature child who tries to ruin games because your mad at the other players instead of leaving or adapting.

Of these, the Warlock is probably the most passable suggestion because other players won't get mad that a magic user is doing tons of damage. I would concur with the sentiment that playing a bard might be the best option. You should still be able to fight in combat (if you wanted to), and buff the other players to force them to be better.
