Nobody mentions power throw? This could add some nice damages to the harpoon no?

Allow me to insist but would it be possible to deliver a touch spell to a hooked creature?

Mmmh... So let's say that the chain hooks into the opponent deeper if you power attack, causing more damage...

Now for the harpoon, is there a way to make the most out of its special properties?
Returning looks nice for double damage.
Can I take more advantage of the fact that it is lodged into my opponent? Is there some spell that could be discharged through the rope as a touch attack or something?

Gaming Advice / Harpoon and spiked chain questions
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:10:39 AM »
Hi guys!

I have some questions regarding these weapons...

1/ Harpoon (Arms and Equipment guide)

It says that "If it deals damage, the harpoon lodges in an opponent
who fails a Reflex saving throw...The harpooned creature can pull the harpoon from
its wound if it has two free hands and it takes a fullround
action to do so, but it deals damage to itself
equal to the initial damage the harpoon dealt."

Now what happens if the PC removes the harpoon? And what kind of action would it take to do it?

2/ Spiked chain (PH)

I see everywhere that it is awesome because you can use weapon finesse AND power attack with... but I just don't see how someone could power attack with something like that...
To me power attacking means smashing the opponent with all the strength and weight we can. This would not be transferred through a spiked chain as it would with a solid 2 handed weapon.
So can we really use power attack with the spiked chain?

@SorO: Yep I found the mag. How can you remember all this without the book? O.o

So basically I can go:
Build1: druidicavenger1/fighter2/warlock6/FB5 if I want to stay out of the Dragon mags, then the 4 last levels would certainly be aspect druid.
Build2: ragemonk2/warlock6/FB10 which gives me many multipliers on damages
Build3: lion totem barbarian1/fighter6/warlock6/FB5 and use pounce and eldritch glaive for A LOT of damage but it is too much for me

1 more questions just out of curiosity caus I won't use it: If I pounce after a charge/leap attack do all my attacks have the same damage multiplication or is only the first one affected?

Thank you all for the help, I have what I wanted, feel free to continue discussing if you want to improve that build and I will make sure to post some other silly drow warlock multiclass builds later.

For the Drow LA, I like it like that. The SR and will bonus completes nicely my high will saves and if I don't want LA I can just go Human.
My alignment will depend on the build, this is not an in-game character, just a theory exercise but if he could fit good aligned as well as evil groups it would be perfect.

Ok so I shoud go for druidic avenger1/chaotic-overwhelming attack monk2/warlock6/FB5/???

the ??? can be:
a/ aspect druid 4 some nice aspects even at low level
b/ chaotic monk 4: +20ft. speed, +1AC, + nice stuff in chaotic monk?
c/ replace the monk2 by fighter2 and go fighter 4: +2 feats, full bab
d/ a nice PrC with easy requirements or feats I already have

I find the fighter quite boring so I will try to get my hands on dragon mags and see what the chaotic monk provides and choose between this and aspects.

EDIT: so the rage monk allows to keep all features if you go chaotic/barbarian. Let's say it works for Frenzied berserker too and I can be:

monk2(rage+overwhelming attack)/ warlock6/FB10

BOOM!!!

Then adding eldritch glaive if allowed.

Interesting... what are the features of the rage monk and chaotic monk? I have seen something like a different flurry of blow for the chaotic like +1d3 attacks at lvl1 ?

Would it be possible to combine chaotic monk, rage monk, Overwhelming attack monk and decisive strike monk?

I don't want to use dragon mags, and I don't have them anyway.

Full round attacks can be nice to add if I feel the build is too weak but let's keep it as is for now and if we add the eldritch glaive and hellfire warlock on top of that I still agree that it is awesome but I still think that it is really cheesy.. will keep the option!

Thanks for pointing me to UA, I found the druidic avenger there which replaces nicely the barbarian level!
I m now thinking about replacing the 4 last fighter levels with aspect druid.... what do you think?

Ape Totem Barbarian gets Power Attack as a bonus feat early

Mmmh... lvl3 is not so early... I get it at lvl2 with fighter + another free feat + it would be problematic as the build is only barb1...
And climb speed instead of speed... I fly.

Jumping is part of your move action so I would think you could fly land jump and attack.

Ok so I have to choose between flying and jumping... not a big issue. Thanks for the confirmation.

Warlock & ECL>10? Needs more Hellfire Warlock.

As I said, invocations and rage/frenzy are not compatible + I don't think I would allow it on a charger build if I was DM.
Let's try to keep it not too overpowered, I could also go with lion totem and a spiked chain to really destroy everything but I like more the idea of 1 round 1 hit 1 dead.
But I agree that it would be awesome ! Maybe if we could find that object that JoshM mentioned allowing spellcasting during rage and then it would become RAW...

You need to pick up Shock Trooper at the 6th level rather than delaying it until the 15th

I'm not sure... this would delay deathless frenzy and I would like to prioritize the control over my frenzy to avoid destroying the party.

And if you're dipping fighter for those Bonus Feats, I'd consider Monk2/Warblade 2 over it. Over Whelming Attack Monk gives Power Attack, Improved Bullrush, Evasion, and Invisibility. Capping your build off with Warblade can mean up to 5th level Maneuvers, including the Save Reroll Boost.

I am not familiar with ToB and UA but I love the Monk Idea!!!

I try to keep it as a 2 base classes 2 prestige classes max, making an exception for the 1lvl barb dip.
This means we forget the warblade and continue either advancing one of the classes or finding a nice PrC.
I couldn't find a nice PrC without too many prereq. feats but maybe you guys have something?
So it seems that the best is to continue advancing monk... getting me +1AC, evasion, still mind, 30ft. slowfall, improved overrun and +20ft speed.
The speed is nice, especially when flying but is it worth losing 2 feats? + If I take monk I have to be lawful evil.
I like it though so will keep both options and continue looking for another PrC.

Unfortunately monk is any lawful and barbarian/Frenzied berserker is any non-lawful...

I would really like to get rid of this barbarian lvl but could not find another way to get the rage ability... maybe someone can come up with something?

Thanks for the advices!

The goal is to find interesting ways to use the warlock class.
Also the build allows to control the Frenzy and avoid destroying my fellow adventurers once I run out of enemies.

I could not use the eldritch glaive while frenzied/raging.

Hi guys!

What do you think about this build:
Don't mind the race, it is just for flavor.

Name   Eldritch Berserker
Race   Drow
build: barbarian1/fighter2/warlock6/Frenzied Berserker5/fighter4

Abilities(buy 25):   STR16   DEX6+2   CON17-2   INT8+2   WIS6     CHAR14+2
Then all points to CON

Feats   lvl1   lvl3   6   9   12   15   18
lvl
1- destructive rage
2- BONUS-power attack
3- intimidating rage
3- BONUS- endurance
6- cleave
9- steadfast determination
12- improved bullrush
15- shock trooper
15-BONUS- reckless rage
17-BONUS- diving charge
18- leap attack

Invocations
dark ones' own luck
devil's sight
see the unseen
fell flight

Notes: high saves to get out of frenzy, flight, charger (obviously).

2 specific questions then feel free to had remarks:
1/ can I combine flight and leap attack? (like flying above obstacles, landing just before the enemy and immediately jumping for the kill)
2/ Any ways to survive after my deathless frenzy runs off?

so what's left are the awesome utility and "screw you" spells.

First I don't find the amount of resources to turn the character into a rogue really overwhelming (losing 1 or 2 caster levels that's all...) and even left untouched I can still be a descent scout (divination, knock, invisibility...)
Then I feel that spell choice is the easy part of determining what your character will be doing.
So if I understand correctly, yes I can be a magical rogue + be the wizard + still be a descent warlock in case I run out of spells?

The ones in Savage Species force you to take all their levels before doing anything else but the online ones specifically say you don't have to do that. So you can just take lv0 which gives you a set of Drow traits that are on par with other LA0 races.

If what you wanted from the Drow race was spell resistance and 120ft darkvision, you'll have to deal with the LA, yeah. Personally, I've never found the range on darkvision to be relevant and spell resistance is as much of a pain in the ass as it is a benefit since you have to drop it to recieve beneficial spells.

As to LA0 Drow vs Human: Human is a better race in general but if your build wants Int and Dex, or to be a Drow or an Elf for whatever reason, it's a good way to do that.

Yep totally agree but as this char will certainly be self-buffing most of the time SR should no be much of a problem.
For the darkvision I feel that 60 feet more might be important in the Underdark.
Thank you for the suggestion, this online version is really more interesting than the one in DoTU/SS

I like your style "the green"!

Ok so let's just forget about the spider form for combat and keep it for flavor. (sorry for the gargantuan form, did not have the book at hand)

Of course my blast (+ eventually spellweave) will destroy anything but I am trying to find some other ways to use the abilities of the character as the blaster role seems quite boring, especially out of combat.

Why not be a better rogue than the rogue if I can? If the party has a warlock/ET instead of a rogue they get all the utility and sneakiness + the spells, no?
In fact actually have 4 different builds for this warlock/ET that I could use depending on the party. I presented this one as I feel it is the most versatile but keeping the same base I can always adapt to be blaster/controller/scout/party face and usually 2 of these roles at the same time.
What I don't know is if I can be efficient enough in these roles, that's why I submit here.

My knowledge of the rules is certainly perfectible, that is why I am seeking advice from wiser players on these boards. I also lack practical experience... your example is exactly what  I am looking for; correction to the mistakes I certainly did, so please get some rest and send more, this is interesting.

Thanks for the confirmations!

Ok so combat wise spider is not interesting... even the gargantuan form?

If not then let's use it for scouting, nobody will be suspicious of a tiny spider and even less suspicious if this tiny spider is invisible.
So if I add flight for the silence, some spells like knock and wizards have many ways to disarm traps then *poof* I am better than the rogue no?
I can also take the darkstalker feat somewhere
And if something ever finds me I can still escape through walls with flee the scene or just blast it down?

If I want to push it, what do you think about:
war3/wiz3/child of the night3/ED7/Unseen sire2
This should allow me to not only rely on spells but also take some ranks in search, spot, listen, hide and move silently....

About the LA 0 with savage progression... what's the point? if I understand it correctly, it is still LA+2 just that you start at level 1 and take 2 levels of drow so you still "lose" 2 levels of other classes no?
Or do you mean NOT taking these 2 levels?
In this case you lose spell resistance and long range darkvision so in my opinion better play a human then.

Ok now I have some questions about the spider form invocation:

How powerful is the spider form?

Is it interesting to go around as an invisible giant flying spider?

Am I silent if I fly using the fell flight invocation?

Can I still cast spells in spider form (still spells? silent spells?)

Is there a way to still be able to use invocations in spider form?

Thanks for the replies,

The stats shown here are after Racial adjustments which for Drows are +2 Int, Dex, Char and -2 Con.
Ok so I could probably get 2 less points in Int and 1 less in Dex to get my str and wis to 8.

I have read the warlock handbooks and eldritch claw does not seem appealing for a squishy wizard (+ it is dragon magazine cheese) I will maybe use it for another build, more melee oriented.
Here I think I will prefer using my invocations to avoid fighting and my spells to add control and maybe some blasting to the fight (certainly using all kinds of rays).

About the ACFs, warlock ACFs seem really crappy... but for the wizard part I was looking at Domain power and/or domain wizard, any thoughts about these?

Hi all,

I plan on submitting some builds I have been working on for a while. I am a big fan of drows and warlocks so lots of my builds will be based off these.

Some important things to keep in mind when giving inputs:
- This is my first post, please correct me if I am doing anything wrong.
- I have never actually played the game, that is why I am interested in your inputs to make it adapted to actual play.
- I am not interested in heavy optimization, I am interested in flavor and fun-to-play builds (ofc fun to play means a bit of optimization to not die at the first encounter).
- I have all books at my disposal but let's try to avoid campaign specific material.
- Yes drow sucks for the LA+2 but idc and builds should be easily adaptable to human anyway.

Now let's get down to the build:
Race: Drow

Class: War3/Wiz3/EldritchTheurge10/FateSpinner2

Stats (buy25): Str4 Dex18 Con12 Int20 Wis4 Char10

Feats: Improved familiar, practiced spellcaster, extend spell, insightful divination, quicken spell, silent spell, still spell

Invocations: shatter, see the unseen, entropic warding, fell flight, spider form, relentless dispelling, black tentacles, change shatter for walk unseen

skills: focus on spellcraft, knowledge planes, knowledge arcana, appraise and UMD. (20 each by lvl 20)

To keep this post not too long I won't explain each choice in details and will wait for your first impressions.
The idea is to have a diviner able to control the battlefield to a certain extend and strike foes where it hurts.
He must also be able to do something if magic is cancelled, due to his high dexterity he should be able to use a crossbow quite well.

Please comment, correct, discuss and improve!

Hi Guys!

Well I have been reading these boards for a while and finally decided to submit some D&D3.5 builds ideas.

Interestingly, I have never actually played the game even though I read all books... but the endlessness of theorycrafting for 3.5 keeps me awake. I am a big fan of the warlock and will publish soon some builds based out of this class.

Due to my location: Thailand, it is quite difficult to find a community to play with so if you happen to be around please contact me so we can work something together!

I am French by the way.
