Sorry, I'm not sure what the DB problem is.

I did stumble across this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zalzala.spellbook tool though. Has anyone tried this ?

Hmm, well it seems the filters don't work on that mirror.  :banghead

What error are you getting on the DB ?

Well, in the meanwhile I found a mirror that has working search filters!: https://tools.rem.uz/

Well that didn't last long. Anyone got any more mirrors ?

Dndtools seems to be broken again — at least for me.

The connection keeps timing out,

Is anyone else having issues ?

First noticed this about 11 hours ago.

Cool — I had been checking — so it's come back in the few hours.

No News as to what happened ?

Aw hell, I worked on dndtools.pw.  I swear I look away for a week and it dies while I'm not working.  I hope someone managed to get a siterip of it that's recent.  I put in several hours of work since it became dndtools.pw and I don't want to see it go to waste.
So in other news.

Thanks!
I loved the project and frequently made use of it.
this,
It has saved me hours of time and allowed me to find answers to all kinds of questions which just takes longer to do the old fashioned way.

So how do we fix it ?

Where is this held ?
When D&D Tools first announced they were going down someone sent a crawler on it to save the site. It's a 149mb file, I should be able to dropbox it for you if you like.

Link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xym6e6yzcdbpx5z/dndtools.eu.rar?
Just unrar into a new folder and open the the index file (bookmark it for easy of access), basic functionality works just fine through it's unsearchable. Note: You don't have to have a dropbox account to download, if the login pops up just hit the X on it.

Is there any program that could be used in conjunction with this to make it searchable?
  • Grab the HTML from the drop
  • Make the changes I suggested
  • Open your local copy
Ed: Actually it might be a little trickier than that - bear with me

I hope you have a back up.

Do you know what has actually happened ?

OK - I've had fun afternoon debugging this stuff  :cool

The Problem
The Search, Pagination and Filter logic all uses the get function which has a hard coded URL in the HTML. This would have worked fine until yesterday when our pacific island sank, now it doesn't point anywhere.
The Facebook interface also uses similar logic.

FIX
Right there are multiple index.html files, one for each category, and they all need to be changed.

The first entry, typically line 73 or 74, is the critical one. The other entries are just for the Facebook interface.

In any event - its just a global file edit of the html - change dndtools.pw to Alycius.com/dndtools.

Unfortunately I can't do this because the files are locked - quite rightly - but the owner of Alycius could do this easily.

I have no means of hosting at this point.

Do we know who hosts alcyius.com ?

OK
How do I fix the search function ?
Also the items per page and pagination buttons don't work — so this is almost useless.
http://alcyius.com/dndtools/ is once such site mirror. The actual pages are simply posted online making it limited in function since it's impossible to host every search variation out there. As a result it only has 37,228 different pages (I have the same copy locally).
Looking at the page source: the Java script seems to be incomplete.
Where is this held ?

OK I think I've found the problem.
The javascript has hardcoded href values pointing to dndtools.pw
These obviously won't work and they probably should be set to alcyius.com

It's likely that they would have worked until yesterday which could be why this wasn't spotted previously.

Hmmm, on further inspection this might just be the Google search and Facebook interfaces. Unless the Filters are just a Search wrapper of some kind ?

If this is the case then the error is in index.html

OK - the failing features all use the get method in index.html which on line 74 has dndtool.pw hardcoded: Search, Filters and Pagination.

The only other feature which uses this is the Facebook interface, which should also be broken. But since I don't facebook I can't test this.

I can't seem to get any of the Filters to work, nor the Items per page, nor the pagination feature. This means that I can only view the top 20 items in each category.

Ed:
I could be wrong, but it appears that they simply forgot to renew their domain name — which figures given that they set up the site about a year ago.

Someone has just (Re?-) purchased the domain name ?

Yes, I noticed it last night but thought that it might be a temporary glitch.

I wish I did, most sites are site mirrors hosted the pages rather than running the SQL queries through the database.

Well that didn't take long. :D

OK, but wizard/beholder mage isn't optimal at all.  It's almost as bad as cleric/ur-priest.
Ok, my bad on that one.

I think that it is completely irrelevant.
Does the character fill the role/concept I have in mind ?
That is the main question really.

Tunnels and Trolls
If you shoot your left foot, go to 14C. If instead you shoot your right foot go to 11B

Carcassonne
You try to shoot yourself in the foot, but are blocked by the river

Supremacy
You plan to shoot yourself in the foot, but you were late in the market phase and all the bullets had gone.

Gaming Advice / Re: Char Ops in 1st Edition?

I'd like to know about some stuff. It's got a lot less in terms of Optimization (due to heavier reliance on DM Fiat, random rolling over point buy, etc), but I bet there's superior and inferior options like the other editions.

Effective spells, ineffective spells. Certain options/equipment/etc. that's incredibly under-powered and over-powered, power loops and combos to be on the look out for.
Once had a 1st level MU roll up Friends as their offensive spell, which he gets 1 of per day. Friends is like a mediocre diplomacy roll. I forget the other spells his mentor taught him, but they were quite poor.
Fireballs in narrow corridors expand to fill an equal volume of space to the normal sphere. There was a lot more blue on blue from spells.
Bouncing Lightning Bolts of walls to hit someone twice, or more.
Rolling a psionic character with negligible psi points was a bit of a liability come the first psionic encounter.
Basically, if you had to make an ideal class (Cleric/Wizard/Thief/etc), what would you do?
Low level wizards were very weak, but high level ones were very OP
High level Thieves were a bit pointless
Rangers started out with 2HD at level 1: Rangers were the best tanks.
