Hi.

We are going to play a new campaign soon. This campaign will take place within a large city. No adventuring to far away lands or hopping from town to town. We will be remaining within the city and doing jobs for the various political powers such as heists, assassinations, framing, or maybe suppressing a civil war or two.

To make this campaign even more interesting, we will be playing what we call "less played" classes. Classes you never really considered before when playing a traditional campaign. The encounters will be "low powered" to encourage classes which are less optimized for combat. However, spellcasting is to be kept to a minimum. No more than 4th level spells, and only if those spells are granted by a prestige class, such as Assassin (DMG).

So, we need ideas for classes that can fill these needs. So far we kind of like Assassin, Spymaster, Nightsong Enforcer/Infiltrator, Combat Trapsmith, Bloodhound, and Vigilante, although not all of these will be played we are making a collection of possible choices.

Can you guys add anything?

Paladin has a bunch of dead levels after 5. Cure disease 1/week isn't very notable.

Are there any other classes you could take a 5 level dip in? Ideally it would continue your spellcasting and give you more smites for Justice Blade.

That is a clever use of Steal Spell-like abilities.

And when I say no tomes, I meant no Tome of Battle or Tome of Magic.

Seeing the tooth, I don't quite follow as to why the party would love me. Besides, it is unlikely my DM will allow any of the tomes.

Also, Dragon Mag isn't allowed by my DM either. I'll edit my post to reflect which sources are legal.

Min/Max 3.x / Help me put the finishing touches on my Spellthief build

So I'm going to be this Spellthief guy soon. Coming in at level 7. Here's what I have so far:

Race: Whisper Gnome
Classes: Spellthief 13 / Abjurant Champion 5 (maybe 4)
Feats: Combat Casting, Exotic Proficiency (Eleven Thinblade), Weapon Finesse, Master Spellthief, Arcane Strike

I'm taking Spellthief 13 for Discover Spells. Abjurant Champion to at least 4, because 5th level will not benefit me with the Master Spellthief feat which maxes my caster level, though abjuration shield bonuses will go from +4 to +5.

My ultimate plan for this build is to utilize Abjurant Champion's Arcane Boost and the feat Arcane Strike for both survivability and melee damage. I've never played a Spellthief, but I can imagine I'll be stealing lots of spells that are rather useless, so I can use these abilities to sacrifice them and turn them into damage.

So, what I need you guys for is I need to decide which spells to learn and which magic items to acquire. Available spells are from the Wizard/Sorcerer list, levels 1-4, of the following schools: abjuration, divination, enchantment, illusion, transmutation. As for magic items, the only thing I can really think of would be rings of spell-storing, to save good spells for sticky situations.

I also need a final class and feat progression. I could use my level 15 and 18 feats for Improved Init and Weapon Focus to qualify for Occult Slayer, which would be a decent dip. Also I might taking extra sliences and silent strike (Whisper Gnome feats) so I can prevent spellcasting while still stealing spells and converting them to damage.

What do you guys think?

Available sources: no dragon mag, no tomes, 3.5 books only

Min/Max 3.x / Let's Talk About Lycanthropes
« on: February 11, 2012, 06:43:03 PM »
So I'm trying to come up with a Lycanthrope character. I would be natural born, meaning I inquire a LA of +3. For the animal I was considering wolf due to it being only 2 HD and werewolves are just classic. My general pl;an is to become my hybrid form for stat boosts and then wield some sort of hefty weapon and beat stuff to death.

As far as what class I want to be, I was thinking 3 levels of Warshaper. Increases my bite damage, gives me more str and con, and 5 extra reach.

Besides that I don't know what other classes to take. I was thinking about Cleric, giving me buff spells and heals. Maybe prestige into Mythic Exemplar. I could go straight physical fighting and do Barbarian, but I would prefer something a little less mindless.

What classes would you guys take? On top of that, any recommendations for weapons/armor/items if you were a Lycanthrope?

Master Spellthief does seem like a must. I never considered summoning to achieve the flanking bonus, I really like that. The Hydra is also clever.

right, sorry.

Books are 3.5 that don't deal with a specific campaign setting. Level going in is unknown, possible 5+. The role in the party will be like a Blue Mage (think final fantasy), or as close as possible. Not sure which weapons/spells/armor I feel like utilizing, as the Spellthief himself has pretty bad options.

What feats would be good for a Spellthief 20 to take? Race would probably be an Elf of some sort.

Min/Max 3.x / I want to optimize Elocator

I want to try to utilize all of his features as best as possible. His extra 5-foot step per turn is wonderful for initiating Skirmish damage, and his flanking bonuses + ability to teleport make Sneak Attack very viable. At the same time, he isn't getting ideal BAB and his teleportation won't allow full attacks in the same turn.

So, first I'd like some clarifications. What about Dimension Step is any different than simply manifesting the power Psionic Dimension Door?
I don't understand the specifics of what I'm allowed to do during a Dimension Spring Attack. Do I move 5 ft before teleporting? After? Do I need to return to the spot I was ported to in order to port back after the attack?
What exactly is Accelerated Action? What does it do? The effect uses two wordings: "while accelerated" and "use accelerated action". Do I get to manifest a power as a free action, then full attack with a bonus attack? Can I move an additional 30 ft as a free action?

Even though I don't fully get the exact effects of all of his abilities, I like the idea of a fast, flanking, teleporting, melee attacker. Because it seems he is supposed to utilize Spring Attack, it would appear his main strengths come from only making a single melee attack per round. I can't think of many feats/powers/abilities that utilize single melee attacks to the fullest, so I would also like some help brainstorming here. My best ideas are getting as much Sneak Attack damage as possible or dipping a Tome of Battle Prestige Class for single attack maneuvers.

All of that said, he requires some manifesting as well, which most likely means 2 or 3 levels of Psion. This leaves 7 levels of additional classes to help boost his effectiveness. Because multiclass penalties will probably be an issue, his race will most likely end up as Human, which is fine I guess. I'm just not entirely sure which classes would best compliment him.
