Hmm... Definitely some interesting ideas.  I might actually adapt weenog's idea as I have an idea for the BBEG likely leading a cult of some sort.  Not seeing too many of these I can adapt into monster encounters as the main focus of the campaign is Monster Hunting as mentioned earlier.  But I'll see if I can't use some of these.

I do like the Swarm guild idea.  And I've got a Sorcerer PC who is all kind of blooded craziness.  Definitely intend to make fun of him at some point.

I just need more encounter ideas though, as I'm making a point not to have lethal fights between guilds.  I do have a Mimic-as-a-chest trapped in some kind of ooze or gelatinous cube that the party must get to but are unaware the chest isn't normal.  Pretty tame actually, but figured it'd be funny.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Standard roles a party needs
« on: March 09, 2012, 04:36:51 PM »
I agree with Unbeliever, the role discussion certainly doesn't boil down to number of PCs.  I'm also used to playing in a games with only 3 or so PCs, and the one I'm in currently we don't have anyone optimized for any roles really.  Except maybe 'The Library'.  I'm a JPM gish, we have a Dread Necromancer that can kind of tank but is more into RP so he doesn't involve himself in combat a ton unless it involves him.  Third person is the Save Monkey.  Mettle/Evasion and lots of dipping to make himself anti-spellcaster.  He tries to be the party leader but he's failing at it and due to rogue levels, he's trying to be the trap guy/skill monkey, but he's failing at that too because his skills are way too spread out.  But still!  We have no dedicated healer and even at mid (8th) levels we're getting by with UMD and healing belts.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: [PF] Cavalier and mount power

Ah, thanks for the hasty reply and link.  So that means if I throw any unique options at him like a Dragon Horse or whatnot it /is/ actually a bit dumbed down.  But I'd probably have to figure out how to dumb those unique ones down since there are a few magical beasts that in the fluff specifically say they can be Cavalier or Paladin mounts... but don't list any dumbed down statblocks that I saw.  (Kirin, Dragon Horse, and Sleipnir are the three I've found so far)

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / [PF] Cavalier and mount power
« on: March 07, 2012, 02:29:21 PM »
I'm running a PF campaign for a group of people that's going to be centered around PF and none of us are terribly experienced with the rules.  One is playing a Beast Rider Cavalier which I'm fine with, since there should be some exotic and interesting mounts for him.  What we both don't know, is if mounts function much like Druid animal companions in 3.5.

Do more powerful mounts like dinosaurs treat your level as - something to offset the power of the creature?
How do you determine power for the mount relative to disruption of playstyle?  (i.e.  Getting a triceratops at 4th level)

I'm trying to figure out some custom mounts for him but I don't want to unbalance the game.  The book seems to imply that getting a creature whose CR is 2-4 greater than a PC's level is not unbalancing.  What do you guys think?

The answer is Catfolk from MM3.  Posted in case you were curious :D  Still open to more silliness though.

Which book is Tibbit from?  Also, thanks for the replies so far.

In the right vein of craziness Halinn, but I'm looking for PF material.  I'd prefer very much not to use 3.5 stuff lest my players start wanting to do the same.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / [Pathfinder] Help me think of some quirky NPCs
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:27:56 PM »
Ok, here's the deal.  Longtime player of games in general but my group needs a DM and I'd like to try out Pathfinder.  Played one shorter campaign of it myself.  Thinking of making my setting one where the PC's belong to a monster-hunting guild.  Looking for a more humorous, relaxed game that has a decent amount of combat for characters and interesting/memorable encounters.

So!  What I want here are stories if you guys had any cool PF experiences, siilly concepts floating around, or funny things you'd like to see happen.  Right now I'm hoping to get some good encounters squared away before I worry about Rival guilds.

For example, I spoke with one player on how large monsters like Giants would have no wealth thats worth anything to smaller races so I made a joke about having the majority of the Giant's wealth in magically enchanted boulders.  Not terribly hilarious, but quirky I thought.  Also planning on making the cattiest catgirl (weretiger beast totem barbarian... can probably do something else too), the Buff Guild (All bards with the different buffing achetypes + paladins and/or clerics)  The Savage guild (all rangers/barbarians/unarmed fighters).  That kind of thing.

None of this stuff is really meant to be optimized as it is quirky and fun.  If I can throw some retarded hilarious monster encounter at my PC's in between the more serious stuff I'll consider my job done.

Min/Max 3.x / Re: Feat and build suggestion for epic-ready Wu Jen/JPM
« on: January 25, 2012, 01:47:41 AM »
It would take a bit of searching Krem, but I thought I saw other manuevers suggested.  So you think 'lockdown' is probably the best strategy?  I know that going crit-based since the Desert Wind school includes a falchion was suggested.  I've never played a Tome of Battle character so I really don't know what to expect.

Was waiting to see if I got more hits.  Thank you Kremti, though I'm liable to change the 'style' of weapon soon as I said.  The main problem is that from skimming lockdown stuff I believe I don't have access to the manuevers necessarily I'd want for that.  Some, but not the best ones.

Still hoping for specific feat suggestions (especially ones in regards to Epic progression) and class progression once I hit epic.

Min/Max 3.x / Feat and build suggestion for epic-ready Wu Jen/JPM
« on: January 20, 2012, 02:14:56 PM »
Hello, first time poster here.  I'll try to not only check the thread often but update for any info that you guys ask.  I've searched a lot of MinMax and CharOp forums and things for stuff(Not really a minmaxer myself, but I find the loopholes interesting and sometimes hilarious).

Anyways, to the meat.
I'm playing a female Wu Jen/(likely Crusader)/JPM/Abjurant Champ somewhere in there in a Forgotten Realms pre-fall of Netheril campaign.  That means very high magic setting, lots of magic users running around.  Also, airships, which the party has 3 of now  :D

I know people will point me to handbooks right off and I've searched through a lot of them.  However, I've seen few JPM or gish handbooks that would apply to the odd Wu Jen/JPM route.  So I'm looking for specific advice on feats and manuever selection.  Spells I'm probably good on but feel free to suggest those too if you have some great ideas.

The party consists of: a 'roguish' type guy that is the Leader(Leadership) and is all sorts of MinMaxery in the interests of making his saves high and Mettle/Evasion so he can take down spellcasters.  Very skill focused.
A dread necromancer who can kinda tank but mostly summons undead and murders things with his touch attacks.  He's the 'medic' of the ship.
Me, a quiet scholarly type who is the navigator.  Early levels I've been disarming people after they use their AoO with my quarterstaff since I wield it two-handed. :)
We're level 6 as of the last session.

My stats are something like (Don't have my sheet off the top of my head, sorry)
Str 15, Dex 14, Con 12, Wis 12, Int 16, Cha 13  I have one flaw (First time the DM is allowing flaws and I didn't want to go crazy).  Chaotic Good, since I know it affects Devoted Spirit stances.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This character is NOT minmaxed/optimized.  I'm looking for advice on how to be effective at various levels, not break-the-game-dm-never-plays-with-me broken.
Feats are something like: Mercantile background(regional), Power Attack, Obtain Familiar, Smiting Spell, Vengeful Spirit.  I have not selected a 6th level feat and I don't have my feats planned out which is the major source of my frustration right now.  :/

Right now I have enough money to get a Quarterstaff of Battle since the abilities are kind of cool and make sense for how I'm playing the character so far... HOWEVER, I realize that if we start fighting more monsters that I'm very unlikely to disarm them due to differing BAB and huge Str scores.  So I have a handful of questions for all you helpful people out there:

1) What feats/manuevers from 6-30(we'll say, I don't know the intended epic level cutoff) would you suggest for a good gish build?
2)  What 'style' do you people think JPM works best with?  Should I go 2-handed and be a charge/murder type?  Reach weapon?(Doesn't look very good considering my manuever choices and gain speed)  TWFing?  Or even just One handed with a free hand to cast.
3) What equipment would you suggest throughout this build?  Some things like Ioun stones aren't allowed because they haven't been invented yet.  Yes, I asked what is disallowed and the DM has not come up with a specific list.

I've never played into epic before so I'm not really sure how well the build will work in Epic.  I also have no clue what levels to take in classes once I hit 21. (So advice on that is appreciated too)

DM is allowing: Stormwrack(for boat stuff), /most/ of FR campaign stuff.  It has to fit the Netherese timeline so Lost Empires, Magic of Faerun, Unapproachable East(since I'm Shao), all the Complete books, DMG1&2, PH1&2, Spell Compendium(I only can pick up 'wu jen' elemental spells, yes I got Combust ;) ), BoED, BoVD... some others.  No third party, he may allow for the WoTC online material like Swiftblade and that kind of stuff.

Thank you all in advance for any advice you have!  I'll try to respond to any questions you have in a timely fashion.

I'm a US gamer with interests in D&D(played 2nd, 3.5, and PF), RPGS including the Fallout series(been on since the first, Planescape Torment to newer ones like Mass Effect/Dragon Age).  Also play 40K and Warhammer Fantasy with my friends using proxies.  Necron/Tau and Tomb Kings.

Only here for 3.5 advice and posts as I'm playing in a Forgotten Realms campaign atm.
