Min/Max 3.x / Re: Quick question about Dragonfire Bards
« on: February 11, 2013, 03:19:17 AM »
Bardic music gives a morale bonus.  DFI never specifically overrides that.

I disagree.  The part about "Instead of the standard morale bonus..." definitely implies that the extra fire damage is not a morale bonus.  Besides, I've never heard of extra damage dice that have a typed bonus.  How would you even say that?  'A morale bonus of Xd6 fire damage?'
Not to say that you couldn't read it the other way, but it seems more contrived to me.

Regardless, presumably he's taken the feat that lets undead be affected by his music, or else why bother?
Yes, I picked it. Sorry for not bringing it up. The whole undead thing is because I want immunity to the Words of creation nonlethal damage so it is a must to be:
a) immune
b) able to heal that in a swift action (or a free action if possible)

If you know of a cheaper (feat-wise) way to heal a few d4's of nonlethal damage quickly, please tell. It should be doable 1/day

It's nice to see the boards came back to life after a month  :)

I wanted to ask what was the PrC that gave the option to have 2 bardic musics at once and if this could be used to have 2 different Dragonfire Inspirations at once (sonic + fire in my case) and the very minimum level at which I could achieve it. I couldn't find it in the DF Inspiration thread.

I'm building a necropolitan Duelist bardblade or something so my group gets buffs. It's optimization friendly as long as I don't get all the goodies
Remember that you're immune to morale bonuses...

Anyway, both War Chanter and Seeker of the Song give dual songs.  War Chanter gives it around ECL 10, and Seeker of the Song around ECL 12.
Was DFI a morale bonus? It doesn't specify on the feat description, quoting the relevant bit "Each ally so inspired loses the standard morale bonus on weapon attack rolls and damage rolls. Instead, he deals an extra".

I did read that as DFI not being a morale bonus, because it only says "adds an extra damage bonus"

Gaming Advice / [WoW d20] Tinker character
« on: July 01, 2012, 10:57:27 AM »
Hey people (I think this forum is the correct one... I apologize if it isn't the case)

My Warlock/ur-priest/Eld Disc died miserably in our last session and I am in the process of thinking a character. My DM is interested in the WoW Tinker stuff (technology, explosions and weird items). I am allowed to pick a Gnome from that book (a lot of crafting bonuses, +2 INT and +2 CHA) and tech classes from WoW rpg as long as I stay "in-theme". This means a Tinker 5/Steam Warrior 4 because I like to be inside a big chunk of metal while pounding things and shooting them with explosives.
The game is set in Eberron, so this tech stuff will freak everyone we meet, as it's from "across the seas" and alien to Khorvaire.

I would like to know if anyone of you people could either point me or help me with building a Large Steam armor, or techmods for it. I have already built a coconut/grenade thrower integrated in an arm. I am supposed to be the weird crafter who makes things go boom.
The basic chassis is Steel Large steam armor, and I have 4 equipment slots unused. I'll be using a plogiston collector for my fuel needs, and gnomish rocket boots for mobility. I'd like to stay sniper with the grenades or a cannon/rifle stuff...

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: What do you usually ban in your games?
« on: June 17, 2012, 07:00:58 AM »

I am not a big fan of Tome of Battle but that's only because I consider it out of genre ( I love anime, but not in my D&D)

:lol
Great link, I have marked it

@Libertad: DMM: Persist can be a great way to alleviate differences between the non minmaxing rogue who doesn't want advice and the rest of the party. We don't ban it unless it's the cleric going godmode over everything.

We don't ban anything except Wish loops, Pun-Pun and Leadership (because it's too much effort to track it. Leadership is OK only to build a business in the background and have your cohort take care of it, and banned for everything else)

6
Well then, it works! Awesome. Thank you for the input on cone and chain too

By the way, asking for a sentence to use this ability with would be too much? Movie references or something very charismatic to say, like "Trust me, I'm a cleric!" while hitting them in the head or the likes.

I'm a bit short in English movie quotes since I watch most movies in Spanish.

The character is a Primordial half-giant Wedded to history ur-priest/eld. theurge (dead god worshipper variant, LN) who is the last primordial who remembers his ancient god. If you know the perfect catch phrase... please  :D

7
This is my doubt. Healing blast allows an eldritch blast to heal damage by spending 1 turn attempt.

Use Eldritch Glaive, tell a teammate "stand still, I'm going to heal you" while wielding the menacing glaive towards them.  Full-attack him.
Is he healed by all the iterative attacks? It can be an awesome view (and a weird way of healing)

The doubt is since an Eldritch glaive is affected by essence invocations on all attacks

What's a good Reflex and Fort save or suck/BFC spell at level 1-2? I want to cover all saves (FORT, WILL, RFLX).
Will -> Color spray, Sleep

Ray of enfeeblement doesn't allow a save if I recall, and is really nice
Ray of clumsiness. Less AC, Initiative for the enemies
Grease. Reflex + Balance or to the ground. It's basically a "you lose, ha-ha" button
Wall of smoke too

Now, all seriously, why do you want to make them save? It's better when they can't even save, or when it's meaningless  :D

Check out grafts, fiendish ones are some of the best for the price
Ok, I checked both Fiendish codexes and couldn't find them... where are these, please? I recall there was a pair of wings which did 1d3 Wis damage each day for a mere 10k, these would be great to have

I might have to use another concept for my character, or tone down the natural weapon amount as it's too high right now.

I'm using:
2 Enlarged Claws from Feral +Warshaper size increase (the Girallon in these doesn't apply as the base is better) (this pair of claws is the main attack)
2 Claws from Girallon Arms
Enlarged horns from Half-Mino + Warshaper
Tail swipe from Warshaper (or Manticore belt bound in the Totem, as it's specifically a tail I don't think I can get two of them)
2 Tentacle attacks from Warshaper
1 Bite attack from Warshaper

Am I doing this wrong? I think I can go around with these many natural weapons (Changeling) all the time

10
As I don't know anything about Pf, I'd build this (then change what you can from Pf if it's better). It's similar to the one you have, with a few minor changes

Focused Specialist Conjurer Wizard 2 -> Focused specialist from CMage
(Ban Evocation, Enchantment and another one of your choice)
Inscribe Scroll -> Martial Wizard variant (you get a Fighter bonus feat) -> Improved Initiative
Trade your familiar for Abrupt Jaunt
Feat Obtain Familiar -> Hummingbird (+4 Initiative)
Trait Agressive -> +2 Initiative, -1 AC
2 Flaws if you are allowed (if everything is allowed, these should be too) (Noncombatant, Murky-eyed)
Feats:
1- Obtain Familiar
Bonus 1- Spell focus (conjuration)
Bonus 2- Cloudy Conjuration
Now you are sitting at +14 Initiative. Lay down BFC before the mere mortals  can even say "oh shi*!"  :D

@awaken: I just finished today's studies, so yes, I'm really really studying  :tongue anyways, I have all my exams this upcoming week so I think I'm going to die

I have had my crime against nature of a character tested versus a mature adult red dragon and a couple other monsters and it didn't end well for the poor thing (cough, grafted wings  :D ) I like the idea of face-raping everything into oblivion instead of playing chess with BFC. Doing over 600 damage on a full attack is nice. I'll tweak the sheet tomorrow and post it for advice

I am going to use the Fanged Ring to skip INA as a feat, then Otyugh Hole -> Psychic Reformation for another feat, get an amulet of natural attacks +2 (since I have too many claws/tentacles/horns for a cheap necklace of natural attacks) and:
-Belt of battle with +2 Strength included in it
-Amulet of IDK what yet with +2 CON in it
-An Initiative Adamantine Greatsword (we also houseruled the required +1 before applying various enhancements)
-Utility items (here will go like 2-3k gold in random items of annoyance and spell components from BoVD and BoED and all I can find)7
-Custom items of +5 Concentration and Boots of +4 Inititative with Jumping added at 150% -no striding-
-I accept and welcome all ideas here, I have already checked Bunko's and the Utility Belt handbooks for random gems of equipment

General D&D Discussion / Re: "Applied" Min/Maxing and you
« on: May 31, 2012, 06:21:49 AM »
Showing off also has a place, if it gets the other players interested in learning -and after that you adapt to the OP level they enjoy, of course- so let me elaborate a bit on this:
Applied min-maxing can be used as a way to show how to improve a character so he isn't totally incompetent unless the DM gives him +15 Vorpal Energy burst haste swords.

That's because many groups have mixed people in them, and maybe one person doesn't like to optimize even a bit and says "No. I'm a ranger 5 because I want to be a *insert concept here*" and won't listen about how they can be the very same character using different classes and be better at what they do. In my group we tend to see classes as "cost templates" instead of developed concepts, because it's what they were in our previous systems. Just templates of how much it costs to get skills and combat capabilities.

After a game in which my god wizard forced a use of Miracle from a level 20 opponent - Widened Stinking Cloud-  I have offered my help to teach how BFC works, and why debuffs are so awesome instead of "I cast a Fireball" mages, and basic optimization. Also, our group enjoys obscenely overpowered encounters, so OP is nice there and it has only taken me 5 months to teach the basics to all of them, so now there won't be any more insane Mary Sue NPCs doing the work instead of the PCs to balance heroic battles...

Basically, if the group would be OK with a Dragonwrought Loredrake Kobold with the Greater Draconic Rite of Passage, then they should be fine with this.  If they wouldn't be OK with koboldery, then don't be a minotaur.
Yes, we have one of these. He went Incantatrix after all that combo and also used Magic-blooded.
Also, one Shadowcraft Mage, one DMM Persist Cleric, one Charger mineral warrior Warblade/Barb/Fighter/whatever weird thing and another one unknown

Yes ... stop studying for Finals !!
 :P

Interesting LA house rule.

Totemist 2 is the basic dip for that.
You get all the various totem and meld options.
The party needs a set of Divinations
so you can use all your variability.
I think I'll end up ditching 1 level of warblade and sticking a Half-Minotaur template on top of all the rest. Being Large trumps almost everything because of natural attacks... oh, and PsyRef Track for... INA?   :tongue
About Divinations... I'll stick to Manticore belt + Girallon arms + whatever unbound so I don't think I'll use all that versatility...

Should I "Feral Half-Minotaur Changeling" it up? Or... DMG to the face for me?

PS. As of now, 36h without sleep, forgive any rudeness or whatever I did wrong in this post...

I have this problem, guys...

I'm studying for finals for uni, but every time I decide to rest for a bit I end up with MoI open and reading about Totemists. I have also read every post about it I could find -Handbook included- and this summer I'll be playing a campaign while DMing Tomb of Horrors for the same group, as it's a short module...

The thing is, I had in mind a Feral Changeling Warshaper for a character, but a Totemist 2 dip is... very tempting. As the character would begin at 9th level, I had this in mind (LA bought off from the beginning because it's not a Tier 1 class. House rules...): Totemist 2/Warblade 3/Warshaper 3/Warblade 1

At Warblade 4 swap a move for WR Tactics and get IHS with the new maneuver. Use Punishing stance to buff all nat attacks,
Get 2 tentacles plus horns and bite, bind Girallon Arms to Totem and Manticore belt for spam-shooting (Double Chakra feat used)
The ruling is, if it's bound to your body, you can Warshape it up, so it's 2 Large claws. I'd get the bonus essentia feat and put everything in the belt if shooting was needed or other places if not

Before anything else, yes, I fell in love with warshaper after I found it for another of my players. No, I won't be using 500 tentacles at once.
Feral is ruled out as "HD-based abilities", not RHD, because the book is like that. At least the one we have is. So at level 9 it has pounce and fast healing 4. A bit overpowered if you ask me but to keep with ScM and Incantatrixes and Psions and whatnot...

Edit: Forgot the question. Any ideas to make this work? Any other soulmeld? I have one unused as of now
All ideas are welcome

There's Alternate Form from Dragonlance: Age of Mortals. It requires dragon(adult or older) and caster level 5th. If you're talking about a DWK it might be possible (so not opening that mess up again), and it allows one set form. It's not really that great, but it's an option.
That's the one. It turns out it wasnt for warshaper abuse and it was only to stay in disguise while in human kingdoms and such

Gaming Advice / Re: good way of killing dragons?

Is Mind Rape + Love's Pain in the table?

My old group loved to blanket our charger in magical protection and drop him near the dragon while the rest of us watched the show

Gaming Advice / Re: Do enchanted warforged detect as magic?
« on: May 27, 2012, 04:32:06 PM »
I'd think a Nystul's magic aura over each of the enchanted "items" the Warforged has in his body would have let him inside

19
Another question from me! This group is taking such a pain to be built...  :rolleyes

One of my characters wanted to know if he could get Alternate form via any feat/ritual/template (like the Dragon ones, you get a humanoid shape to use as long as you wish, to conceal your nature) while avoiding magic items, because of VoP.

(I fear this is to get a DWK Warshaper with permanent warshaper abilities, but whatever. The group is really high-end OP as it is, it wouldn't be that much)

20
My doubt is as follows.
Let's picture a fairly OP build: DWK Loredrake Kobold (venerable ofc) Sorcerer 4/Mindbender 1/Incantatrix 1

Using Loredrake I qualify for Arcane caster level 5 (Mindbender) with the SLA for the Rite of Passage at 3 used for Charm Person. Then at 6 I go Incantatrix and greater rite of passage, banning Enchantment. Mindsight would be picked as the 9th level feat, as the BBEG will be at ECL 10-11 against the party, using more Incantatrix levels and Persist goodness

Is this legal by RAW? As Charm Person is a SLA it wouldn't be affected by the School specialization from Incantatrix, right?

*All this is for a BBEG, so I can go all-out with crazy shenanigans to challenge a Tier 1 party, so if any more flavorful ideas for this are welcome as well*
