Unarmed Melee Build
« on: May 15, 2013, 08:17:05 PM »
So, I'm doing a battle dancer and I'm going with human and I have found an interesting feat called Jotunbred, from races of faerun, and it gives pretty much the powerful build to a human, my question is does it also increases the damage of unarmed damage?

Feat is here http://dndtools.eu/feats/races-of-faerun--23/jotunbrud--1702/

I'm going to go with "no".

Whenever you receive a modifier based on your size on an opposed roll (such as during grapple and bull rush attempts), you are treated as Large if that's advantageous to you.
Unarmed damage is not an opposed roll.

Good luck!

Edit: interestingly, RAW says you are treated as "Large".  Even if you start out as small, tiny, or diminutive.  I can just see someone going to step on a bug, and being in for the surprise of his life :)

Just curious... What kind of bug is also a human?  :P

I don't have it handy, but would the ritual from Savage Species that grants you a type qualify?

regarding unarmed damage: as mentioned before, the correct answer is no.

however, there is one exception: if your DM is using the defensive roll alternate AC rule from UA, wherein every time you are attacked, instead of adding the flat default 10 to AC, you roll a d20 and add that to your AC instead; this makes combat itself a series of opposed rolls (with a size modifier) - which would then qualify powerful build to affect combat attack and defense rolls.

The feat you want is Superior Unarmed Strike from Tome of Battle (though isn't really related to ToB at all).  It scales your unarmed damage as you rise in level.

Actually I also wanted this feat, because im going like a bruiser, knockdown battle dancer, so yeah I was just asking if it also did the trick but thank you for showing the Superior Unarmed Strike.

A monk's belt would also be useful, if the DM allows it to apply to battle dancer.  Don't know if it stacks with the feat though.

What sources are you allowed? Any AEG books? Theres the feats Natural Weaponry and Improved Natural Weaponry, which move up the damage of any natural attack by one die type each. Nice feats to get and easy to qualify for if you have access to the books.

any chance of getting the DM to adopt the defensive roll rule?

Would that really work?  It's the to-hit roll that's opposed, and being treated as large gets you a -1 size penalty.  The damage roll is not opposed.  Or does the fact that the to-hit is opposed carry over to the damage roll?

You shouldnt get the -1 because of size penalty.... It says you're only counted as large if its beneficial to you

hmmmm, good point. if so, that would invalidate my argument for this one character of a friend of mine. =P
