Help with my first Binder
« on: December 15, 2011, 10:29:44 PM »
Hey folks.

So, I was invited to join a new game. The game is being run by a DM that I have never really played under and he has some really wonky ideas. He had us draw our whole stat arrays from a bunch he had scribbled on pieces of paper and thrown in a hat. I got lucky and drew a ridiculous array. I have never played a Binder, so figured what the hell might as well give it a try.

I have decided to go for a Venerable Dragonwrought Earth Kobold. Stats are as follows:

5th Level (stat bump into CHA)

Str: 13
Dex:18
Con: 14
Int: 21
Wis:14
Cha:22

The DM totally accepts the interpretation of DWK's being the awesome, so that is good.

Basically, I have no idea where to go from here though. I am tempted to go for the whole Anima Mage route, but not sure if that might be too over the top. Anyway, any suggestions would be great. The rest of the party consists of an unknown character that belongs to a player that shows up very sporadically, and a DragonFire Adapt that wants to focus on Metabreath stuff. So, I am thinking that I may have to fill multiple roles, which from reading the binder handbook, which is a little confusing, I understand to be one of the strengths of the Binder.

Oh, also, the DM is giving what he calls creation points. 10 points to purchase various things. Here is the cost breakdown.

Feat= 2points.
Stats=1 to 1 up to 20
10k gold beyond WBL=3points
Templates or LA= variable based on the template/source of LA
Fast Healing 2= 5points scaling for more healing
1 level=10 points

Up to 2 flaws allowed. No Multiclass penalties. All sources are open, assuming I can find a digital or physical version. Though the DM is a bit resistant to Psionics, as he just plain doesn't like it.

Did I miss anything?

Man.  I want 10 free feats.  The game already looks pretty OP whether the DM likes it or not so I would consider Anima Mage strongly.  There's some general tips in the handbook here: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=11235

It's organized poorly, but I plan on fixing it and moving it to these forums as soon as my finals are over (tomorrow!)

Well it is only 5 free feats, 7 if you count Flaws, but I am thinking about stacking Templates or something. Seems like it would be a really useful thing.

Some things I'm noting about this game...

1) While Charisma is important for Binders, it's not necessarily as important as a casting stat.  I'd definitely go Binder/Sorcerer/Anima Mage, and look for another PrC offering more Charisma synergy to top off the build.

2) I'm guessing that +1 LA is 3-5 points and that +2 is more like 7-10.  If that's the case, then picking up a +1 template is advisable, although there aren't that many I can think of off the top of my head that help an Anima Mage all that much.  Maybe Dark?  What's available?

3) Note that 3 points effectively doubles your starting wealth.  Definitely pick that up.

4) Always take two flaws.  Check out the flaws from Dragon in Realmshelps and see if those are any more useful to you.

5) Feats are nice, and the difference of your creation points should be spent there.
