Yes, grease is awesome.

Anecdote:
7th level party I was a member of (playing a wizard+PrCs) ended up chasing a berserk clay golem all over a city.  When we finally caught up to it, the thing had already made short work of some guards, townsfolk, and the odd wall.  It was sizing up to be a nasty encounter.  Well, until I cast grease beneath its feet and it spent the rest of the combat failing to stand up.

The rogue/assassin beat it to death with a piece of adamantine rebar.

Truly the answer to all rampant golem problems is a puddle of grease and rebars from the nearest construction site.

This honestly sounds like one of the games I end up in.

Anyway, grease is one of those great AoE control spells. So long as your melee has some ranks in Balance (they should), there's very few reasons not to drop it on the BBEG or a swathe of enemies, and it can help lock down any would-be charges the enemy is hoping to initiate.

I've not yet had a Arcane caster in the group clever enough to exploit this spell a lot, but I've seen it a few times, and it fared well.

On a related note, there are some Grease spell variants that are interesting for comparison/contrast purposes:

Incendiary Slime (2nd Level) - http://dndtools.eu/spells/complete-mage--58/incendiary-slime--784/
Sticky Floor (1st Level) - http://dndtools.eu/spells/races-of-the-dragon--83/sticky-floor--3081/
Ice Slick (1st Level) - http://dndtools.eu/spells/frostburn--68/ice-slick--1256/

(( The latter spell was mentioned earlier by Kethrian )) ...

I'm probably missing a few others.

Zook1shoe brought up an in interesting (and possibly entertaining) combination.

How would you all adjudicate a foe who is in both a patch of Grease and a patch of Sticky Floor at the same time?

We'll say one of the spells was Quickened.

I'd say one reasonable interpretation, though most certainly not official in any sense of the word, would be to have them cancel each other out. Much like haste and slow dispels and counters the other.

Peace,

Get stuck to the floor while prone ;)

while moving in the AoE of both spells.. You are automatically entangled and must make a balance check and a reflex save at -2 for entangled or be stuck. Fail the balance, make a reflex save for fall prone

if stuck, make a check to break free, as a standard action.

if prone, move action to stand.

if both, its basically your whole turn breaking free and standing up.

make another reflex save vs. Sticking, to even move at quarter speed w a balance check.

get a 5 or less and fall prone. You're stuck with a standard action only. And have to make more saves.

throw incendiary slime in for more saves

Too much work. If it was a PC in this situation I'd just give them another character sheet :P
Do you know how long someone who is as sarcastic as I am would last in prison? Suuuuuuch a long time.

And, when sculpted as a 2nd lv spell, it becomes pretty solid battlefield control giving four 10ft squares of hard terrain that does all of the above noted things.
Yes, this spell does sculpt quite nicely.

As an anecdote, I ran a Swashbuckler/Rogue with Daring Outlaw in a 7th level game that made heavy use out of this spell (a wand in a wand chamber on one of my short swords). I had a wand of Sculpted Grease (CL 3) that I would open a lot of combats with. It was great for divide and conquer strategies to allow me to get in the thick of things without getting ganged up on. It was great for making large creatures flat-footed so they couldn't take advantage of their reach to make AoOs while I closed in. It was fantastic for letting me make nearly constant TWFing Sneak Attacks against my targets.

Run this combo in Difficult Terrain ... Or add a cheap, cheap bag of marbles for Grease Stacking ... Or combo with a party Spiked Chain tripper who's Enlarged.

All cheap, easy and reasonable combos for maximum lockdown.
