3.5 Optimized Master Specialist [Conjuration]
« on: June 04, 2013, 08:19:21 PM »
Hi everyone,
I woud require some help about the best way to build my own character.
I would like to play a Lv. 20 Focused Specialist Wizard, whose PrC would be Master Specialist. Her school specialization would be Conjuration, and her forbidden schools would be Enchantment, Evocation & Necromancy :bigeyes

Quote
Race: Gray Elf
Score Points: 32

Abilities:

Quote
Str 06
Dex 15
Con 13
Int 20
Wis 11
Cha 08

My character would go:

Quote
Focused Specialist Lv. 6 (1-6)
Master Specialist Lv. 10 (7-16)
Archmage Lv. 4 (17-20)

With 20 consecutive wishes, the +6 wondrous items (I don't care much for Str & Cha) and the +5 Lv. 20 ability bonus going to INT, my character would be:

Quote
Str 06
Dex 26
Con 24
Int 36
Wis 22
Cha 08

Her raw STs would be: +7 / +8 / +6

Focused Specialist Lv. 6: +2 / +2 / +5
Master Specialist Lv. 10: +3 / +3 / +7
Archmage Lv. 4: +1 / +1 / +4

Resistance, Superior: +6 / +6 / +6 [resistance]
Stone of Good Luck: +1 / +1 / +1 [luck]

Quote
Total: +20 / +21 / +29

Her feats would be:

Quote
- Abrupt Jaunt (exchanged with Familiar Advancement)
- Scribe Scroll (offered by the Wizard Class)
- School Focus (Conjuration)
- School Focus (Transmutation)
- Skill Focus (Spellcraft, offered by the Master Specialist PrC)
- Greater School Focus (Conjuration, offered by the Master Specialist PrC)
- Craft Wondrous Item
- Improved Initiative
- Arcane Mastery
- Summon Elemental
- Dimensional Jaunt
- Augment Summoning (I don't really know if it is worh it... Insightful Reflexes instead maybe)

Her 4 archmage special abilities would be:

Quote
- Spell-Like Ability (Shapechange, I use a Metamagic, Extend, greater Rod while casting both spells which assures me to use the Shapechange spell all day long)
- Spell-Like Ability (Time Stop)
- Spell-Like Ability (Time Stop)
- Mastery of Shaping

Now I would have a couple of questions. The Ench. and Evoc. schools do not mean much to me, however I am really sad to abandon Necromancy. I would be much interested in the different ways to get back Necromancy spells, particularly Clone, Shivering Touch, Create Greater Undead, Enervation, Waves of Exhaustion and Ray of Enfeeblement.

- I've been told that I could get a level in the Sorcerer Class, which would allow me to use scrolls for Clone and the like. But that would be -1 CL.
- I am aware of the Spell Reprieve feat, but I would have to take it far too much in order to get enough Necromancy spells.
- I am also aware of the Arcane Transfiguration feat (which requires two other feats, among which Spell Reprieve) but this is impossible as my character is not a Lv. 10 Specialist Wizard.

1. Would you know other ways to get half a dozen spells of her forbidden school(s) ?

Also I am quite happy with her current feats, but I am not sure about taking Augment Summoning as it is a good combo with Summon Elemental but still, a Large Elemental or a Large +4/+0/+4 Elemental, that does not make quite a big difference. Even with Augment Elemental.

2. Is there any important Wizard feat I am missing? (I already know: Dimensional Reach, Quicken Spell and the other metamagic feats, but since I cannot use Necromancy spells, choosing Quicken Spell seems less interesting as I can also use Time Stop for Black Tentacles and the like.)

3. If you have any other comment on my character's build, please feel free to make them!

Check out the Arcane Schooling feat, well, at least for making use of scrolls/wands, though you could just use UMD

That Augment Summoning may be better served as Quicken Spell.

What are your main goals with this character?  It seems pretty generic wizard so far.

The main goal is to gain field control and buff/debuff while fighting with the team (Maze, Black Tentacles, Walls, Haste) as well as keep on being useful when the team is not fighting (bypass traps, dispel magic, hide people, etc.) ...and in the meantime, be able to efficiently achieve personnal missions such as infiltration, search, liberation (Shapechange is so good for this!) and deal great damages when being threatened or having to defeat somebody/something on his own (basically using Gate for that, or cheesy combos with Shrink Item ^^). Being God in a way :bigeyes

My character is not focused on blast much, but can still cast some delicious Evoc. spells (like Contingency or Forcecage) thanks to Shadow Evocation, Greater. The only thing my wizard does not do is... inflict serious debuffs with Necromancy spells, hence my post :)

You could use the wizard variant that gets fighter bonus feats and get Improved Initiative at level 1, then get into master specialist @ level 4. That would throw School Focus (Transmutation) a little bit behind and gets the bonuses of master specialist earlier.
Am I correct in assuming you have taken the option of Focused specialist?

Yes, my bad. By Specialist Wizard, I was actually meaning Focused Specialist (otherwise my wizard would not be able to get access to the Master Specialist PrC)
If memory serves, a Variant Wizard is no Specialist Wizard, a fortiori no Focused Wizard, as a result there is no way she can become a Master Specialist. Is there?

With your DM’s permission, you can use any one of these variant classes in place of the standard class of the same name. Depending on the campaign world, variant classes may exist side by side with standard classes, or they may replace standard classes entirely.
There really shouldn't be any problem here imho.
Btw, the Master Specialist PrC doesn't require a Focused Specialist, just a Specialist wizard.

Alright my bad, it is true that being a Focused Specialist is not required for the Master Specialist PrC. Only being a Specialist Wizard is.
Your solution is interesting but it does not really grant additional spell slots, as every domain contains irrelevant spells. I guess this is only a matter of preference.

I'm afraid then the best solution for my problem would be to forget the Focused Specialist possibility and remain a 'mere' Specialist Wizard instead. Good bye extra Maze, Black Tentacles spells. Hello Necromancy.
