Quick question on special material costs
« on: July 01, 2013, 05:51:32 PM »
For a pet project of mine, i've been drawing up a spreadsheet for an item builder, to ease up on customization costs and whatnot... Anyway, i'm currently in the weapons department and noticed that some special materials have their costs as multipliers (ex.: Darkwood).

Does that multiplier apply to the base cost of the weapon (i.e. the MW+weapon cost)? or the weapon as a whole (i.e. with the enchantments)?

I'm going for the 1st option... it not only makes more sense to me, but also the alternative would be too harsh to be viable!

However, maybe i'm blind, but i couldn't find any RAW on this. Could you help me?

Thanks!

I'm not sure where to look. The Darkwood example doesn't make sense - according to DMG 283, a Darkwood item costs the base price of the weapon + MW price + 10 GP/lb. None of the DMG special materials have this problem with wording (closest is Cold Iron, because it assumes that magic weapons are made in one go and not further enhanced later), so we need to look in the offending book.
Darkwood: "To determine the price of a darkwood item, use the original weight but add 10 GP per pound to the price of a masterwork version of that item."

Er... the source must be wrong, then... :/

I looked it up HERE... (BTW, full credits to Daniel678. That guide is a gem for my pet project!).

Please look "Darkwood" up in the spoiler, under "Materials" and a :( face...

Yeah, I'm not sure what he was thinking. He must have read it wrong - he references the SRD (here), which also includes the line "To determine the price of a darkwood item, use the original weight but add 10 gp per pound to the price of a masterwork version of that item."

Dragon Magazine 357 (p56), fey cherry wood, when used in the construction of magic items, grants a 10% discount to raw materials and XP costs

Thats one of my favorites.. Definitely don't forget that one.
