Swift actions as Standard
« on: July 05, 2013, 04:30:27 PM »
When a character uses an immediate action, the swift action for the round is done... ok...
Can that character activate a swift action item (ex.: "Anklets of Translocation") as a standard action instead?

There was a recent discussion about this, and IIRC the answer is "no".   You can use a full round to do a standard, you can use a standard to do a move, but you can't use full/standard/move to do a swift.

I had a feeling this came up somewhere, but couldn't recall where, thanks...

That being said... not cool! :(

I'll try to include a houserule in which one could perform a faster action as a slower one. A standard as a full-round, a swift as move (or standard), etc.
Otherwise, this can hamper or negate the use of some valid resources by the players... That doesn't seem fair to me.

Example: a wizard that prepared a quickened "Dimension Door" spell to escape battle and happened to perform an immediate action, would be denied the use of that spell, even if he opted for casting it as a normal one (losing the slot he prepared the spell on, even if higher due to the metamagic modification).

Yeah, time-wise it doesn't make sense.  But I think WOTC tried to "balance" a lot of stuff based on only getting 1 swift action per turn.  Allowing more may have unintentional consequences.  But I say go for it and see what happens.

This is one of the reasons that Ruby Knights Vindicator are considered so powerful.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Just to clarify my point: I'm not saying the swift action would remain as a swift action. For example, if i wanted to activate "Anklets of Translocation" (swift action) in the round following an immediate action, that would instead take a move action, with all the risks involved (ex.: possible AoOs).
