Dungeon Magazine, Dragon Magazine to go on hiatus
« on: September 18, 2013, 09:03:45 PM »
From the editorial page of Dragon 327:

Quote
In years past, when we found ourselves at the lonely crossroads between game editions, the magazines simply went from one edition to the next with nary a breath in between. This time is different. As we turn our attention to the next D&D® rules set, we’re putting Dragon® and Dungeon® on hiatus.

The D&D magazines are going dark beginning in January. In other words, the December issues (#221 of Dungeon and #430 of Dragon) will be the last issues you see for a while. The magazines will continue on their present trajectories for the next few months, during which time we will answer questions such as the following: when will Dragon and Dungeon return, what form(s) will the magazines take, how much D&D content will the magazines publish, and how does one submit pitches for articles?

Thoughts?

I think WotC has absolutely no idea what they're doing with D&D at this point, so it kinda makes sense that they'd reign everything in and figure out the plan.

I'm surprised they aren't keeping it going to pacify the 4E fans some.  The subscriptions must have really tanked.

Question could be whether they're pulling that staff to work on Next books/content which they hedge is more valuable than the subscription, or axing them in the short term because the expense of their labor > revenue from subscriptions.

Not really a surprise ; heck Penthouse just went Bankrupt and they had a much larger and more aroused market.

If you throw together a list of the Top companies in a given field, they usually do not have a Magazine selling along with it.  The top Mags in a field are published by something else.  Example:  GM/Toyota/Ford vs. Consumer Reports or Motor Trend.

I'd bet though, that wotc isn't going to hand Dr/DuMag back to Paizo.

I wonder if CosPlay is gonna be a big enough The New Thing or trend, that it could be integrated into a "D&D and" magazine.
