Help with God
« on: January 14, 2014, 07:14:17 AM »
Hi, i am here to seek help for my god wizard's build.
I play in 3.5, in the Forgotten Realms setting; i can use every manual (except for Kingdoms of Kalamar), and we start at 3rd level.
The plan is to begin with the "Expedition to Undermountain" campaign (modified to support our power level and our iniziative) with a 5-members party: there's a druid who plans to be mainly a summoner, a bard who's designing a bardic music-centred build, a binder that is focused on the BSF role, an Ilmater's cleric who wants to be a buffer/healer/supporter and me. We want to reach and go beyond epic levels (it's an high-powered campaign). I am a human wizard from the Sword Coast, i picked the domain wizard variant (conjuration) instead of the focused specialist to remain a generalist (others members of the party tend to need a magic babysitter in every field) and took 2 flaws. My master let me pick the 1st level "elf wizard" substitution level for bg reasons. I chose the Collegiate Wizard feat but i am uncertain about the other 4 (it depends on the chosen build).
I think that trying to be a buffer/debuffer/cc together would only lead to be a "waste of space", so i want to be mainly a debuffer/cc (with buffing almost uniquely restricted to spell choice) and i was thinking to be a Wizard 5/Incantatrix 10/Archmage 5/then we'll see, maybe Cloistered Cleric 1/Dweomerkeeper 10. I am sure that my project sucks and i surely need advices in: which build would be optimal, which feats i have to apply easy metamagic to, which spells i have to apply arcane thesis to, which other feats i have to choose (now and during advancement).
My abilities are:
STR:  10
DEX:  18
CON:  18
INT:   18
WIS:  10
CHA:  12
I am not good at builds (nor at english), so if you need clarifications or more informations just ask. Thanks in advance for your help and attention.

So you're starting at level 20?  If you are taking Incantatrix, you will likely not suck. =)

I have mixed feelings about Archmage.  Mastery of Shaping and Arcane Reach are both useful, but 3 feat entry tax is annoying (although skill focus is not bad for Incantatrix).

Maybe look into Wizard 5/Incantatrix 10/Shadowcraft Mage 5

Also Mindbender 1 with Mindsight feat is good.
Nightmare Spinner 1 is good once you have 9th level spells.
Fatespinner 4 is good if you want to debuff.
Also you can push up your progression and start with Wizard 5/Incantatrix 10/Cloistered Cleric 1/Dweomerkeeper 4

I'll take a look at the classes, thanks! But i'm starting at level 3, i'm just planning the build on the long run. I'm not sure i'll not suck because i have no idea which spell would benefit more from arcane thesis and which feat would benefit more from easy metamagic. i was thinking of enervation or orb of fire (with elven spell lore) but i suspect that they would begin to be useful (with metamagic) at high levels and before i would be a dead weight

Personally I find the greatest ability of the incantatrix to be the third level metamagic effect. This means you could got into Initiate of the sevenfold veil after if you need defense.

Iot7V is a crazy defensive monster, those veils make him close to impervious to everything. And they can protect your teammates as well.

i looked at the IoT7V and it's fantastic! Do you have advices about a feat progression and a build for an Incantatrix/IoT7V progression?

So, I've not read the adventure itself, but I'm mildly familiar with the lore of Undermountain and Halaster. So, I'm going to conjecture about what I'd expect from making a reasonable knowledge(arcana/history) as a novice wizard.

Perhaps slightly spoilery, but your wizard might choose to advance in particular studies with such foresight.

before i would be a dead weight
As a wizard who is missing no caster levels you should never be a dead weight, even if all your feats are SF: Basket Weaving and Toughness.

So, your party is as follows:

The worst possible build for a druid is to focus on summoning, so you need to actually CARRY another tier 1 character
bard who NEEDS to prestige to make his build viable (too many things later on are immune to mind-affecting), so hopefully he makes the right choice(s)
cleric of ilmater doesn't really need to prestige, nor be a persistabuffer, but I(we) suggest that you help him be a persistabuffer as it is a very good build from level 1
binder (don't know much about "BSF" or binders in general, so can't really give opinion)
you the wizard

Three tier 1 characters in a party should allow you guys to succeed at everything.  The only issues you might run into are poor choices for the other tier 1's, a bard who doesn't prestige into bardic-music PRC's, and a binder who looks cool on paper but doesn't really contribute much to encounters and non-combat play.

So, you need to be able to carry the party.  Not that hard to do as a wizard, but you might get tired of being the only person winning combats (or might not :D )

Domain Wizard 5 / Incantatrix 10 / Wizard +5 (don't do Archmage, IMO it's a waste of feats), once you are 20th, just advance Incantatrix to infinity, no need to pick another class.

Don't summons go crazy in Undermountain because they can't leave after the spell ends? Or is that just WLD?

I thought in WLD Simmons had a large chance of not working or if they did turning on you if it did work not sure about under mountain and I don't have WLD in arms reach right now
