My first swing at an Incantatrix - How to make her better?
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:49:01 AM »
Right guys, I have been playing D&D for a couple of years now, and I am usually the one getting stuck with the divine spellcaster role, because I am the only one of my friends who sees these classes as anything other than a walking wand of CLW. However, in the most recent campaign I joined I was offered a chance, my very first in fact, of playing a wizard, and I took it, and now I am trying to make my wizard as godlike as possible.

The campaign starts at level 1, and is expected to end at level 30. All 1st party scources are allowed, the starting stats are generated with 28 points, and the character MUST be a core elf. No templates allowed.

This is where I need your help.

The character:

Race:
Grey Elf

Stats:
S: 6
D: 12
C: 12
I: 20
W: 8
C: 12

ACFs:
Elven Wizard substitution level 1
Fighter bonus feats instead of wizard bonus feats.

Familiar:
Humming Bird

Build:
Wizard 6/Incantatrix 10/Mindbender 1/Fatespinner 4/Incantatrix +9
Incantatrix drops the enchantment school at level 7.

Feats: ((b) is bonus feats)
1: Spell Focus: Conjuration
1(b): Improved Initiative
3: Extend Spell
5(b): Point Blank Shot <<< Help? Anything better?
6: Iron Will
7(b): Empower Spell
9: Arcane Thesis: Enervation
10(b): Chain Spell
12: Metamagic School Specialization: Conjuration
13(b): Quicken Spell
15: Twin Spell
16(b): Persistant Spell
18: Mindsight
21: Epic Spellcasting
24: Multispell
24(b): Multispell
27: Maximize Spell
27(b): Intensify Spell
30: Multispell
30(b): Multispell

So, can I improve significantly upon this wizard? And if so, how?

Thanks.

Why Wizard 6? you can enter Incantatrix at 5.    Also, you can get Iron Will from a magical location if your DM lets you. :)

All prereqs must be fulfilled intristically, so items granting Iron Will are ruled out. Sorry, should have mentioned that too.

Wizard 6 is an OCD of mine... +1 on all saves and +1 BAB is a good way of leaving your first base class. Perhaps it is time to abandon that idea..

EDIT: Right, I just noticed that moving Incantatrix forward one level would also eliminate that annoying Fatespinner level that was flopping around at level 21. This wizard officially cuts out of its base class at level 5.

Huh, very similar to my incantatrix build that I just posted.  Consider the feat uncanny forethought.  I'm assuming for int you'll get a +5 inherent, +7 from leveling, and +6 from an enhancement bonus?  With 38 int that means you'll be able to spontaneously cast any 14 spells you know every day via uncanny forethought.  That's right, you just obsoleted sorcerers.  Be a domain wizard instead of an elven generalist, or both if your DM allows, but that's ultra shady.  Don't forget the elven racial sub at level 3 to double the initiative bonus from your hummingbird.

I'll definitely look into Uncanny Forethought, but doesn't the elven generalist entry say that the only bonuses that are multiplied by the 3rd substitution level are save bonuses and skill bonuses? Im pretty sure of it, otherwise I would already have been all over that option.

Any thoughts on good fighter bonus feats for wizards that are not Improved Initiative?

For level 5 you could take Domain Granted Power ACF from Complete Champion, page 52, instead of a fighter feat.

Eh, it'd be pretty harsh to rule that the sub level only effects some familiars.  RAW that's true, but those were also the only types of bonuses that existed at the time.  I'd recommend spontaneous divination over domain granted power.  In conjunction with uncanny forethought, you're suddenly able to spam spells like a sorcerer, and the domain wizard ability means you're only down 1 spell per day compared to a focused specialist or sorcerer.

The magical location Rebel mentioned isn't an item per se, but literally just that - a location. It has an effective treasure value as all magical locations do, so starting with its benefit costs money, but once you've gotten the bonus feat from it, the feat's yours. It's the Othyugh Hole in Complete Scoundrel, check it out.

Consider dropping some epic incantatrix levels, as well as fatespinner ones, for epic Mage of the Arcane Order. The ability to access the epic spellpool is really quite nice.

Can you take flaws?  That's 2 extra feats.

Can you take 2 traits as well? Ask your DM if fractional saves and BAB are in use. That way you can bump them up a little bit.

30 levels, huh?  And don't wanna lose CL?

Wizard 5/Incantatrix 10/Shadowcraft Mage 4/Archmage 1/Incantatrix +10

Hello auto extend and free Reach Spell, bonus epic feats almost every level, and Shadow Miracles from less than cantrips (read: automatically metamagicked to get to cantrips).  Oh yeah, uses Focused Specialist (Illusion) if available, and the non-racial SCM adaptation.

Alternatively, if you can spare the feats, go Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil if you can get the Indigo Veil to block line of effect.

And then persist it with metamagic effect :devil
